I shot a raccoon yesterday. My wife had been bitching that an animal kept burrowing a hole in one of her flower beds. He was in a live trap that I use because the old Bitch next door demands I release them back into the wild. She and my wife are friends, so I trap them and take them into the wooded lot next door where I “humanely” release them.
I shot this one from about 100 feet with my .22 Cricket. I shot him eleven times. Odd that I didn’t hear the usual “Thunk!” when the pellets hit, but my hearing isn’t as good as it was a year ago. When I went to the cage to examine my head shots, he had some kind of genetic defect, because he wasn’t bleeding! While I pondered this phenomenon, one of his eyes opened REAL SLOWLY, just a slit mind you, then closed just as slowly. My background as a master hunter tells me this was involuntary muscular movement after death. Usually raccoons thrash and jump around a lot after being shot. This one didn’t. He just fell over on his back after the eleventh shot, and didn’t move a bit. I knew then I must have hit his Hippocampus, that part of a raccoon’s brain that makes it thrash around after being killed.
I dumped his carcass out of the trap, and as I was walking back to the house I could hear something running through the woods behind me. My vast knowledge and woodsmanship told me it was likely a predator rushing to enjoy a free meal. Nature is like that! Nothing goes to waste!
Anyway, I filled the burrow hole and I’ll be damned if the next morning there was another burrow hole in that exact spot!!!
As few people know, raccoons, being quite intelligent, sometimes gather into a group the locals call a “Cluster-Fuck”, where they gather to eat, socialize, and apparently discuss what’s going down in the woods, and what the latest word is around the lake. I can only assume one of the members took over the deceased member’s den site.
Strange incident, but true!
Kind regards,

Fat Women are like Mountain People : Easy to lure and easier to satisfy. Or so i’m told …
Likewise for catching mountain sheep.. its all about the element of surprise and a good pair of velcro gloves.. if you cant find some at your local sporting store give Hemn a P/M and he will send you some like he sent me, a lady in his village makes some very nice velcro gloves they strangely call Claww Klash.. she makes nice slippers too..
Unless you have velcro on the inside of those gloves to attach them to the hairy knuckles they will just slip off. I think you are just showing off now, no practical approach to the subject.
That show is FULL of errors, one of my hobbies is distillation and I can tell you that I got a good laugh out of that show. The part with Popcorn was nice but they didn’t tell anything new in that interview. Too bad, it would have been nice to know a bit more of how he actually did his mashes in reality.
Ask Huub to build you another Viking of his. Mine is 49 cm long and can do 24 fpe in .22 if I crank up the power adjuster. Weight is about 6.5 pounds scoped, about 5.5 pounds without a scope. I can tell you that they are great guns 🙂
Is huub in the UK? BSA actions? How long did your build take?
Huub is in the land of clogs, tulips and coffee shops. I hear they drink quite a lot of coffee there, although when I last visited I settled for maibock as I was there in springtime. I paid 700 euros for mine used, it went through Huub and the support afterwards was great. Yes, BSA Ultra action, regulated and side cocker conversion. Excellent hunting tool.
Popcorn Sutton is a legend among Moonshiners over here. The series “Moonshiners” ,or what the hell was its name, on Discovery Channel made him popular. And those two Bozos for Moonshiners as well.
Dear Leadpecker…
When I lived in North Carolina we used to drive through Va./West Va. to get back to Illinois. Those mountains are the most beautiful place on the East side of the country. Going through a thunderstorm is an experience, with the thunder echoing down those ridges.
Too bad the poverty and unemployment is so bad there. Hardy breed of people.
Hoot:
Wing,
Thanks for sharing, never did hear of popcorn til now. He reminds me of most of the old timers in my family. There aren’t many of them around anymore, and I could write a couple hundred pages of stories that have been passed down through the years.
From the whiskey rebellion to the coal wars, Appalachia has had it’s share of colorful stories and characters.
I spent the last two hours watching his docco and it drew every emotion I had..
Mad respect for that guy.. “Man in his true raw form”.
Take the time to watch it guys 🙂
Popcorn has a documentary made about him called “The Last Run”.
If you ever get a chance to view it, it’s worth the time. Popcorn committed suicide after he was caught making another batch of ‘shine. He vowed he was too old to go to prison again, so he blew off his head. I’m not certain, but I think the state put his remains in a cell for the next six years, determined to see that he carried out his sentence.
It’s a hard life, then you die!

Can it be so that you missed those ten first shots while you lucked out with the eleventh and hit that ‘Coon in the Hippocampus? I mean since your eyesight isn’t what it used to be in 1950’s you may have missed the target and thus didn’t hear the Pellet thunk. Is this plausible ??
