Q:

Time to test new Pellets !!

I got a Tin (or actually a Plastic Box) of Hurricane .25 cal. 30 ge pellets to try out. Really good looking Pills made to Hurricane Air Arms specifications and they resemble Daysate Rangemaster. I want to go Pellet testing right now but it´s dark, cold , humid and very windy. Maybe tomorrow.

I´ll , however , send a Tin of these to Whineyman so he can measure and test them since he´s much more qualified than i am. My approach is far less scientific : Shoot them and measure them Groups. The old way from those days before the Berlin Wall came down .. 😯

I actually inspected every single one of those 275 Pellets that came in the Box and there is zero percent distorted skirts. The skirts are kinda thick and these Pills are actually called ” split skirt” , whatever that means.
Here´s the actual Info once again :
What’s new about the Hurricane 18 grain lead Exterminator air bullet?
1. It is made on a single die system and the wire feed is controlled by a laser micrometer, so every one is identical with minimal weight variation from batch to batch.
2. The unique patented split skirt allows it to adapt to the various types of rifling providing better accuracy and increases muzzle velocity because of lower friction through the barrel.
3. Its bullet shape has a superior ballistic coefficient which provides greater downrange energy.
4. The presentation of the Exterminator in its robust packaging ensures that you will not be throwing away distorted pellets because of cheap inferior packaging which should be a major consideration when assessing the cost per pellet at face value.
5. The formula used for the premium lead alloy reduces the need for frequent cleaning of the barrel.

These are found in .22 & .25 cal. In .22 there are three different weights to choose from ; 18gr, 25gr and 37.5gr . I need to get the Doc to test those .22´s in his Cricket and EdGun.

Hi wingman,
How can we do to buy Edgun’s pellets ?
Have you got some address where to buy ?
Thanks
Merou

The pellets have just arrived..first impression is they look nicely made.. Ill do some testing shortly.. its is sunny 24 deg c and no wind.. Time to kill some paper..

quote Sir Ville:

Wingclipper is definitely onto something when he says those longish, Dildo-shaped Xterminators need more speed to fly as intended, that´s for sure.

That is certainly what I have found in the past Sir Villopean tubes.. they have a slightly rearward centre of gravity when comparing to the std Diabolo design so they love a bit of speed or a faster twist rate if you really cant get more velocity.
I have both grounds covered for this up and coming test.. a brand new (but old stock, made back before they went to shit) 16″ match grade 1-16 twist hammer forged BSA barrel and a brand new match grade 24″ 1-17.5 twist button rifled Lothar Walther barrel.. both choked.

The Two barrels are far apart in design but both shoot equally as well as each other.. I really cant pick a favourite. As for diets id say the BSA is a little less pellet/head size fussy but requires cleaning more than the L/W does.
I have the same .25 BSA barrel fitted to my custom Marauder bullpup and it LOVES the 25.4gr Kings, 27.8gr Benjamin domes and the 36gr Daystate Rangemasters.. All of these pellets shoot single hole groups at 50m in this gun.

I will run different barrels and velocities from some of my most trusted and proven platforms and see what Vildos dildos prefer..
Check out the two kings pushed through the BSA barrel on the left and the L/W on the right.. note the difference in width of the lands grooves and the amount of skirt and head deformation on the BSA pellet, it is noticeably harder to push through the bore than the L/W which seems to only just contact the pellet leaving the rifling grooves untouched by the pellet head, the L/W has much thinner lands.

Did a little (very little actually) shooting today with the Xterminators in the cold and snowy backyard of ours. I wanted to see the difference in velocity between the 25gr King´s and them 30gr Terminators. When the King´s are spit out at 280 mps the Terminators do 266 mps. I wound the HST up one turn (on the Imppu adjuster brass screw) and got the Terminators upto 280 mps which meant them Kings were upto 296 mps at that same setting. Checked the speed with my trusty Combro.
I shot few 5 shot groups at 30 yards ,and almost froze my heavy-duty Finnish nuts off in the process , and at 280 mps the Terminators were a one hole affair – not a ragged hole but one hole in approx. 8mm in diam. 30 yards is nothing though but this felt somewhat promising anyways.
Two mags (24 shots) with the 30gr Terminators at 280 mps took exactly 50 bar on the gun gauge – however the gun was at 200 bar in room temp before this and i took it outside at -5 degrees celsius and when i was finished it showed 150 Bar in the freezing temps so i know it would´ve taken much less pressure in warm ambient temps.
I really need it to get warm again before i´ll do any further AG shooting (or any other kinds of shooting for that matter) at outside.
Wingclipper is definitely onto something when he says those longish, Dildo-shaped Xterminators need more speed to fly as intented, that´s for sure.

Thanks for the confirmation email Villdo.. they should be here next week and Ill put them sweedish lead fallace’s through their paces and post the results asap.. :geekn:

Great! I can test them on my Cricket, the old Finnish way by shooting some groups in different velocities, but your Barrista – approach will be much more in-depth and scientific.

Hope they don’t peter out! 😯

I chatted with him about upgrading my Condor .25 for a long range cast shooter as well. All I need is the money. LOL Can I ask how much you will have invested? I already have a Condor frame and tank, etc.

quote bogman:

Dyotat is nearing completion on a Condor .25 for me which will shoot reg’d. pellets or slugs. It’s got a TJs and I’d be eager to try out those “dildo” pellets, once it warms up and Dyotat’s finished. The JSB work great out to 100 yds. Don’t know the twist rate on the TJ barrels.

Gad, are we really going to call these things “dildo” pellets for short? Could lead to some interesting misinterpretations.

Maybe we can call them Hoot: -ers.

That way, if the accuracy is crummy, it’s likely to bug him more than we already do.

Blasphemy ! Nothing bugs the ol´ Hoot: er. , NOTHING. He stands above such human feelings, much like a Mighty Oak growing on those green hills of Toad Suck.

I wait for Winoman´s verdict and if he thinks those Dildo´s / Hooter´s are a go then i can fix some over to Stateside as well. The Postage is steep for such heavy packages so it´s better (for my Wallet) if we wait for his opinion first and then, if he gives them a Green light , i´ll happily send you a Tin (plastic box) to sample them. Fair enough ??

so I take it that these pellets are 30 gr. in .25 or did I mess read. Strange that they would have a heavier pellet in .22..

A heavy pellet in .25 is somthing a lot of folks have been waiting for! 😉

You read that right. 22 cal comes in three weights; 18,25 and in a whopping 37.5 gr while the .25 is offered in 30 gr only – for now.

Damn! So no Soup for me regarding the BSA barrel then. My oem barreled Bug shoots really well eventhough the .25 cal’s are fitted with the LW barrel. I’d like to get my hands on a barrel with 16-16.5″ /1 since that would, in my book, be a better choice for shooting these longer Pellets like Daystate, Xterminator etc.

I could buy a FX ST- barrel but i have my doubts about its prowess for longer range/ faster pellet speed since there’s only 4″ or so “rifling” in those. I have very hard time convincing myself that this measly 4″ is enough to give a heavy .25 Pellet enough rotation if shot at, say, 285 mps . OG may have a point in his 75 yard conspiration theory – just due that fact alone.

SIRVILLE, I ordered a 24” BSA barrel blank, from Leupy in Scotland, for my 25 cal R2.5 long. The barrel on the R2.5 was very easy to change out and I spent 6-8 hours at the local 100 yard range swapping the stock and BSA barrel out back to back and testing for accuracy.

The BSA barrel shot better than the stock Matador barrel at 100 yards. Not by a whole lot but, it did shoot better.

When I ordered my 25 cal R3 long, I emailed Leupy and tried to order another 25 cal BSA blank. Leupy told me that BSA had just sent him 500 barrels and that he had to send the whole order back to them. He said that the quality of the BSA barrels bore’s had gotten so bad that he couldn’t/wouldn’t sell any of the 500 barrels that he had received. He told me that I should have emailed him 2 days sooner, he sold his last “good” 24” 25 cal BSA barrel blank the day before!

Leupy told me that BSA had asked Gamo for some cash so they could replace some worn out barrel mandrels and also for maintenance and upgrades. According to Leupy, Gamo refused the extra cash and upped the production orders for the BSA barrels for BSA and Gamo guns that were being made in Turkey. He told me that he was “probably” out of the BSA barrel selling business.

Supposedly, there was a noticeable decrease in the BSA barrel’s quality around 8-2011.

Leupy told me that, if I wanted a 24” long BSA barrel blank, my only option was to buy a used BSA Lonestar and use the barrel off of it. Not being able to find a good used BSA Lonestar; I took a chance and bought a NOS Lonestar from AOA. It was on close out as AOA had lost their exclusive US BSA import rights from Gamo. AOA told me that they have had the Lonestar in stock “forever”. I hoped that it had a “good” barrel on it. I gave $425 with shipping for the gun, put a 25 cal FX ST barrel on it and sold it to my buddy for $325.

Don’t get me started on the early ST barrels! It shot almost as well as the stock 25 cal R2.5 barrel out to maybe 75 yards. Anything after that, the stock Matador barrel was better and the further the distance, the worse the FX barrel shot compared to the stock Matador barrel.

On the 75 yard thing, I have heard, from a couple of different sources; one of the sources was there during the discussion: that AOA and FX decided on 75 yards for the Not So Extreme Bench Rest competition. Must have just been a coincidence!

Anyhow, I had the Lonestar barrel fitted and ready before I got my 25 cal R3 long. I didn’t really give the stock R3 barrel a chance; I just put the BSA barrel on the Matador.

I do like hammer forged barrels, they don’t “cut” into the pellet like a riffled barrel does and the HF barrels don’t seem to need cleaning as often.

I would like to find a hammer forged 30 cal barrel to try on my 30 cal R3. TJs currently don’t make one that is suitable. AOA won’t sell me a 30 cal ST barrel to try but; I have a way around that! 😆

If you want to try a hammer forged barrel, you might try to buy a Cricket barrel blank. I have read that the Cricket barrels are hammer forged by CZ.

PS, About a year after trying to buy my second barrel from Leupy, I got an email from him stating that he was again selling BSA barrels. I asked him if the barrels were back to the same quality as they were before? His reply back was something like, no but, the quality is better than the last batch that I had to return. I don’t think that I would buy a new BSA barrel from anybody.

PSS; I sold the 25 cal R2.5 with the Leupy BSA barrel still fitted to the gun. I really wished that I would have put the stock barrel back on before selling the gun!

OOPS! Sorry SIRANVILLE! I just noticed that you were asking about a hammer forged barrel for your Cricket!

Nevermind! 😳

quote Sir Ville:

That’s nothing – I know a guy who’s brand new Hatsan had a Barrel mounted on backwards so the choke was at the breech end. It was threaded in wrong ends so the Turks probably had the barrel backwards in a lathe- which is understandable since there are total of two (2) ends on a barrel blank… 😉

Needless to tell how that rifle shot….

My .green mountain barrelled .25 Marauder was the same.. the choke was at the breech end of barrel and it shot like a scatter gun.. I replaced it with a 16″ BSA barrel and its a real tack driver!

so I take it that these pellets are 30 gr. in .25 or did I mess read. Strange that they would have a heavier pellet in .22..

A heavy pellet in .25 is somthing a lot of folks have been waiting for! 😉
