Q:

To anyone that has a Jack Haley .257!!

What bullet molds are you using, if you’re casting your own? his specs are for 80-90 grains, but the only molds I’ve been able to find are for 50-55 grains, or a 64 grain mold. I need some guidance before I take the plunge on a Jack Haley rifle- Mind you, I don’t want to buy pre-cast bullets, I want to cast my own. My dad’s been clearing out the basement and found about 12-15 years worth of scrounged lead… so I’ve got some castin to do!!! 😈

Not really 80.

3600 should get you there.

To be honest, without Jack or John responding to these questions, we can only speculate on some things.

I’m seeing RJ fill to 3100 and John tethering his gun as well as filling it to 4400. But i hear the 257’s are filled to 36-3800 psi.

So is Johns 257 a whole nother beast from what Jack is selling or what’s the numbers on a standard off the shelf 257 is my question. Not John Bowmans 257. Or are they all ONE IN THE SAME GUNS?

These are the same questions I have. When I talked with Jack he told me that he has not made any guns with Johns power level. I asked him what about accuracy and he said that he has duplicated the accuracy of John’s gun, but not the power. So it would seem that it is another gun, perhaps not by design, but disparate nonetheless. I’m stoked either way and I am looking forward to it 😎

Yeah, I’ll be content filling my future .257 to 3600, but If I am feeling like stretching her out to 300, I’ll give her some more wind 😎

DogWood, us big bore and small bore airgunners are past filling to 4400-4500 psi on our guns. Believe it or not, that pressure is NOTHING!

While i can’t scientifically break it down as to an exact number, its a lot higher than what most compressors can pump the tube up to.

Now, there are different tube materials and many of us including me have visited their websites and read the numbers. 2024 T3 is a common and popular material. 6000-7000 series is popular too and there numbers go into the high tens of thousands to high 100 thousands of pressure. Chrome Moly is another material used. Machining threads and grooves in the airtube does take away some of the high burst strength and only the maker of said gun could answer that question. But the burst pressure of a common airtube is much much much higher than 4500 psi.

But i also have to say, i’m not a fan of filling that high for other reasons. I prefer 2000-3600 psi. When you start having to fill to 44-4500 psi, you gotta have either MORE SCBA tanks with you or you have to have more SCBA’s and a compressor with you on your outings….lol!

Jscks tubes r rated to 4500psi easy. A hand pump will kill u. Also with my tank filled to 4500 i can all day. Also the hammer stroke is the same as the other guns i believe.

I’m fat and need the exercise 😯 LOL damn desk jockeys…

Tanks and shoebox are on the list, just a matter of time and money…

I have the time but not the money 🙄

I do believe a hand pump is good for over 3500 PSI

And as 80 Grit asked, what is a safe fill on the tube?

Just because someone is filling to 4400 doesn’t mean it’s a good idea

So the next “table” we should build is what fps is necessary at what yardage. For instance, Cedric is getting good accuracy at up to 150 yards with only 900 fps. What will be the range limit on that kind of fps with that kind of bullet, etc?

What is the DOT max fill pressure on Jack’s tubes?

Luckily I have a CF tank and My local fire department gets me around 5300 psi per fill. I would be okay providing I don’t shoot the thing all day, every day. I saw a shoebox on the yellow the other day for 350.00. I suppose thats not too bad.

So basically these hammers have the ability to open up a 4500 psi tank 😯 What is truly amazing is that with that kind of capability one would thing that it would hit so hard that accuracy would be affected but as proven by allot of you guys that is not the case. I bet Jack has one hell of a stroke on that hammer!

Yeah, you guys need SCBA tanks at minimum. 2 would be better…lol! A compressor helps also. THank God for my shoebox.

Power comes with a price and that price is air consumption. Thats the difference with these type guns that shoot bullets and the new FX BOSS and WOLVERINE that shoot pellets. Much easier to be efficient while pushing pellets than bullets

These QB based guns are only gonna give a few shots per fill. 5 at best.

My TalonDor257 is only pushing roughly 900+ fps and i have a 490cc bottle and i can get plenty of shots, the problem is, THEY AREN’T all 900 fps. 5 at that range and its downhill from there. So a QB based gun with a 300+cc tank pushing bullets at 1200 fps is a air consumer.

Guys, rifles of this design are not at their best as hand pumpers, you really need to go much higher than 3100 PSI to get the best long range accuracy.

If you don’t have a tank, you better be thinking of getting one.

Real quick.

RJ, What weight are you shooting and what kind of velocity are you getting with that 3150 fill?

I’m with 80 grit, no tank, good to hear your getting more than 1 or 2 good shots

Joe,

I think you can go well into the 4000’s and even to that 4400 fill without valve lock.

quote rj-porter:

Hey 80,
Im using a 3150psi fill on my haley. Im in the woods hunting now and got turkeys all around me. I’ll check back in later.

That’s what I was hoping to use for mine when I get it. The reason I sold my .457 is because…………..I did not have a compressor, and I still don’t.

If the JH that took that 300 yard plus shot was filled to 4400 psi was the same exact design as yours that rig would have to have some kind of hammer spring adjustment, wouldn’t you say? Otherwise you would expect some serious valve lock with 1200 more psi. Would you be able to fill to that kind of pressure and still open the valve for a usable shot?

5 good shots at 50- 100 yds. I think u all need to get one or two of these things

how many good shots at 50 you get on that RJ?

sounds like a good time. good luck bro.
