Q:

.22 short shooters?

Hey guys,

I have about 1K invested on my 10/22 and I don’t use it. I want to convert it to .22 short with a kit from Volquartzen. My question is on ammo. The only rounds I’ve shot are CCI CB’s that go about 730fps, now Ive seen shorts that say anywhere from that to 1100. I want a nice quiet round that I could shoot all day like the CB’s at 730fps. Any suggestions, yes I would like more power, but not at the price of pissing people off.

How can they get a short to fire at over 1000fps when the bullet weighs the same as the CB bullet? Or could it be marked on the website as Short when its actually LR.

I did see some CCI’s that go 830fps which I may buy because I cant imagine they are too much louder, but could be wrong.

The weight on most I’ve found, if curious, is about 29gr.

Thanks,
Justin

Match barrel, I will try the SS this weekend, if I can find some. The gun store should have it.

A . M. you try the sub sonic long rifle stuff yet, the bullet not having to jump to the rifling might be enough to make it be more accurate.

Is the barrel on your 10-22 a match barrel or standard

I will not sell it. Ill just buy the 452. I have too much into it to sell, plus the semi auto is too fun.

why does everone what him to sell his 1022????? i would just shoot sub lr the lowest powered my gun shoots are Aguila Ammunition 22 Long Rifle Subsonic 38 Grain they are like 88 fpe, my gun shoots them fine but i polished everything inside,i know some people change out the charging spring to make the gun shoot even lower powered stuff. i never liked the idea of shooting shorts in a lr chamber and i imagine you have a tight target chamber. if you what lower powered go bolt action. but don’t sell you 1022 u will regret it. bolts are good for accecery but there is nothing like a 25 round clip hooked to your gun.

I used to shoot BB caps and CB caps for “quiet” pest control but accuracy was mediocre and hard to feed the short rounds into the chamber. There are now several brands of subsonic long rifle rounds, maybe not quite as quiet as Cb’s, but more accurate. You’ll have to see if they have enough power to work the bolt, CCI subsonics in my 10/22 with Clark barrel don’t work the bolt, but you canfill the magazine with them and work the bolt manually. Other brands of subsonics might have more power (and more noise!) to work the bolt, but I haven’t tried them.

Good Choice, you won’t be Dissatisfied. Of course, like most guns, the trigger will need to be tuned. DIP makes an adjustable sear, that works great or you can shim. http://www.diproductsinc.com/Products.aspx?CAT=3600 also picatinny rails.

Another way to shim the trigger, shim glued to receiver, under the silver pin with dimple, beside brown pin in receiver : http://i967.photobucket.com/albums/ae156/leo558/2790crop.jpg

Dust,

Your definition for over bore and under bore are not even close to established wisdom.

Under bore is when the case is filled with the slowest canister powder available, it does not produce excessive pressure, Ie., 45/70 or 30-06.

Overbore is when it does produce excessive pressure, ie 30-378 300 RUM.

Almost all modern bottlenecked centerfire rifle calibers will not burn completley in a conventional length barrel.

Over bore and under bore really do not equate to small bore rimfire cartridges.

Also I would not think the 10-22 barrel mounting system is dependent upon weight not length, and I am not sure either again with traditional lengths would apply here.

How long would a sporter barrel have to be to equal the weight of a bull barrel 10-22?

Perhaps a mute point when the action is spitting out a case of still burning powder.

I use an anne sporter with good results.

I’m gonna keep my eyes open for the 452. A custom barrel for the 10/22 is going to cost the same as the 452.

I know I am coming in late, but wanted to mention some things that I didn’t see mentioned yet. Rimfires, especially the 22LR have shown higher speeds in shorter barrels compared to the same round in a longer barrel, so it would make sense that the longer barrel is keeping the powder burning off so the boom it makes coming out isn’t as loud

About your 10/22. Because of the way the barrel is mounted, unless you get your reciever and barrel threaded, I think you will have a problem with a long barrel in the 10/22. Try out an old gun with a long barrel and shoot some standard or subsonic ammo.

Thanks had it lying around and thought hey might as well slide her on to protect the perfect crown.

This old girl will stack .22s at 50 yards and at 100 yards group the size of you pinky finger nail with Eleys.

No matter who I let shoot this old girl they all shoot well. The trigger is soooo smooth but it seems to like the expensive Eley stuff the best.

quote Randyhub:

I like my old Anschutz 310, I bedlinered the stock to cover 35 yeras of field use but will refinish it one of these days.

Find subsonic Eley .22 LR to be the most accurate and Stingers Yellow Jackets the worse but in reality this old girl doesn’t get much trigger time now I have a .25 Condor. 😈

Randy

You are another one of those goofy people who put a muzzle brake on their .22lr. Can you say tacticool? 😆

But, if you want me to help clear some space, I am perfectly willing to crowd up my gun cabinet with that. Just mail it on over. 🙂

Seems interesting so I posted .22 rim fire ballistics.
