Q:

.22 short shooters?

Hey guys,

I have about 1K invested on my 10/22 and I don’t use it. I want to convert it to .22 short with a kit from Volquartzen. My question is on ammo. The only rounds I’ve shot are CCI CB’s that go about 730fps, now Ive seen shorts that say anywhere from that to 1100. I want a nice quiet round that I could shoot all day like the CB’s at 730fps. Any suggestions, yes I would like more power, but not at the price of pissing people off.

How can they get a short to fire at over 1000fps when the bullet weighs the same as the CB bullet? Or could it be marked on the website as Short when its actually LR.

I did see some CCI’s that go 830fps which I may buy because I cant imagine they are too much louder, but could be wrong.

The weight on most I’ve found, if curious, is about 29gr.

Thanks,
Justin

I don’t think you are arguing at all. 🙂

Why do they make subsonics and standards? I have no idea. There is a 30fps difference. I use standards because the subsonics are hard to load for me. Don’t know why, but the bolt just takes more force to close with the subsonics. But the subsonics are also hollow point (standards are round nose) so that could be it as well. The standards are very close to the barrier, and I think the 30fps is enough to make it definitely over the line.

As far as noise, the fact that the noise is farther away probably helps a little, but it is a big difference regardless. Normal subsonics are very quiet. Caps literally make the same noise as dry firing. Nothing at all from the barrel.

I have a remington 597 as well, which as a “normal” length barrel. Tomorrow I will stick different rounds in each and get a direct comparison. I will also try to record it on video. Firearm noise isn’t always great on a video, but I will try it and if it comes out well I’ll put it up. But if nothing else I’ll at least be able to tell you what I think.

But I will say this, a 10/22 will never have the accuracy (or build quality in my opinion) of a cz. So buying one regardless isn’t a terrible idea. 😀

Lama,
which one do you have, I found this one with a 28″ so it should be even quieter right?

I prefer a more modern or tactical look Do you know of any after market stocks off the top of your head? Can a rail or scope mount be put on this one? In the specs it only says sights?

thanks,
Justin

If it is really that quiet than I would buy one. I could just get a longer barrel too, right? Is it possible the noise is just being forced so far away from your ear you don’t hear it?

If CCI standards are subsonic why do they make the sub sonic round, I never got that?

I am not trying to argue or disagree, I just want to make sure before I spend a few hundred bucks, whichever route I go.

thanks

Sell that 10/22 and buy a long barreled cz. 😀

The sound barrier is your real noise. Subsonic ammo is going to be much much quieter than supersonic. And a long barrel will let the gas expand inside of it, so much less noise coming out. My .22lr has a 26 (I think) inch barrel on it. Subsonics make just a pop similar in noise level to opening a soda can. I can shoot it outside and neighbors on the porch next door don’t notice. But I am more fortunate than you, in that I can shoot supersonic ammo and they will notice, but they don’t care. I just shoot subsonic to be nice. 😀

Mine feeds and shoots shorts just fine. I tried going that route to keep the noise down, but as you have found, many of them just load lighter bullets and go the same speed, resulting in the same noise. Right now I shoot standard velocity cci and it is very quiet.

The actual loud part is impact. The bullet hitting a squirrel or something is twice as loud at least as the actual shot. So that is something to keep in mind.

Many of the caps don’t have powder. They work only on primer pressure, sometimes with a tiny bit of powder, which is how they are so slow. They never worked for me. I was getting horrible groups. CCI subsonic and standard are perfect.

On the topic of the barrel length, it really does reduce noise. Combined with subsonics, people at the range have told me they thought my rifle had a silencer on it. Hastings used the same principle in making their “metro” shotgun barrel extender. It is a 32″ extender that reduces the noise of a shotgun blast by over half.

thanks sam!

Sam 😆

I have a Condor with shroud that makes no noise. Once I’m done getting it the way I want it I will never buy another AF gun. They are too much work for me when there are guns that work flawlessly. I do not have nor want to use my time messing around with all the stuff that goes along with AF guns. Not saying I don’t like my AF gun, when shooting good it is my favorite gun.

If accuracy is important and quiet subsonic performance is important – then sell the 10/22, buy a 22 Talon with frame extender and SCUBA tank. You’ll have money left over for a kick-ass scope.

If collecting guns are your thing; keep the 10/22 and buy a Talon 😉

Short, shot in a long rifle chamber, coats the chamber between the length of the different cases. Therefore you must clean the chamber before using the long rifle bullets. The long rifle bullets will get stuck on the powder residue, going past the length of the short.

The short will leave powder residue in the chamber, where the long rifle completely fills the chamber, leaving no residue inside the chamber, thus failure to feed/eject.

With a semi-auto some unburned powder will always be deposited into the chamber, where the short will powder coat inside the chamber with burned powder coated residue.

Sell the 10/22 😉

as much as I’d like to sell off most of my powder burners for air gun stuff, I don’t think I could. Just something I do, I’ll buy a gun, but not sell it even if it sits there and I keep putting money into it.

Here’s a 5 shot group at 25-30yds with the CB’s. Not good, Ill have to try the ones that go 830fps when I get them. If its because of the rifling probably wont be much difference.

Sell the 10/22 😉

Also some guy at Dick’s sporting goods said using a short can mess with the gun when you switch back to LR something about burning or scratching the chamber? You know anything about that?

yeah thats a much better idea, potentially saving me hundreds. I know it will never compete against the condor, i just never get any use out of my powder burners because of the noise. If silencers were allowed in this state I’d probably never leave my backyard again.

thanks for help I’ll order some of the 830fps to compare against the 730fps in the unconverted 10/22

here a good article on shorts.

http://www.pyramydair.com/blog/2009/10/are-cb-caps-as-good-as-pellets-part-1.html

The shorts will be allot quieter than long rifle but still noisy.

those cci’s will be under the sound barrier, but way louder than a springer or like a shrouded condor.

Now if yu bought a silencer licence for the 10-22 with the 850 fps shorts then it would be as quite as a shrouded condor.

But why thats only 48 foot pounds and never be as accurate as a good tuned condor.

I went thru all this before even buying a springer, but if your just trying to use the gun in the back yard i assume, then but the cci 850 fps rounds and just try some, with out spending any more money and see if you want to go any further with the project.

You should be able to load the ammo in a clip, and cycle the action by hand, just makes it a single shot.

Thanks powderburner,

Glad I asked, I didn’t know about the barrels.

So would you say the 1000fps shorts are probably as loud as standard LR?

Now I’m looking into this round its got a little more power but not so much that it should be loud. what do you think? http://www.cci-ammunition.com/products/detail.aspx?use=1&loadNo=0037

Also I will be ordering some barrels from LW maybe I could get one for this purpose. Any recommendations on that as far as twist and length?

thanks
