.22 short shooters?
Hey guys,
I have about 1K invested on my 10/22 and I don’t use it. I want to convert it to .22 short with a kit from Volquartzen. My question is on ammo. The only rounds I’ve shot are CCI CB’s that go about 730fps, now Ive seen shorts that say anywhere from that to 1100. I want a nice quiet round that I could shoot all day like the CB’s at 730fps. Any suggestions, yes I would like more power, but not at the price of pissing people off.
How can they get a short to fire at over 1000fps when the bullet weighs the same as the CB bullet? Or could it be marked on the website as Short when its actually LR.
I did see some CCI’s that go 830fps which I may buy because I cant imagine they are too much louder, but could be wrong.
The weight on most I’ve found, if curious, is about 29gr.

I don’t usually measure. I like impossible accuracy, so I usually shoot and just get angry and assume I’m not doing well enough if the holes aren’t touching. 😛
But, just as a guestimate. I’d say average at 100 yards is 1-1.5″ Had a few around .5″ but I don’t know if that is what the gun is really capable of, or just one of those lucky things.
I really never pay attention to 50 yards, because I almost never shoot at that range. But I did shoot one day and put 50 round in a 1/2″ circle. 😆

Lama, what are your best, and average, 5 shot 50 and 100 yard groups with your CZ?
I would love the Lux, but now price is a big factor.
The barrel can be changed, but now I’m not sure how much a 30″ barrel would cost to have made that would fit my stock. May cost as much as the Ultra-Lux or close.
I’d go with the Ultra Lux, Shoots out the box, scopes an option, but not necessary to shoot?
I’m not familiar with the 10-22, can you change the barrel or it’s off to gunsmith. Heads would turn, with that barrel, for sure.
I tend to think the LUX, being a bolt gun, would be more accurate, but is the accuracy worth the price.
Seems a bolt lock on the 10-22 would take the “Fun Factor” away, the price paid for silence!
I guess you need to sleep on it for a while, I’m staying away from the gun shop, don’t think I would leave a Lux on the rack?

I just got off the phone with them.
He said the best option is to go .22lr subsonic in the long barrel. That is what he does and is overall the best in his mind. You can quiet that down by adding the bolt lock. The best ammo for quietness is the Aquilla SS if your going to stay with LR.
He said if you want to shoot shorts just to do it in the LR barrel, and has found no reason good enough to keep the short barrels on hand. He said the modern short ammo performs pretty much the same in his long barrels weather it is chambered for short or long.
I believe he said the most accurate short ammo for his barrel would be RWS 25 .22 shorts and he was getting 3/8″ at 25yds. That was with the barrel rifled for shorts which apparently isn’t that much better than shooting them through his LR barrel.
Does that factory style barrel that long need to be supported by the the forearm. I have a fatter barrel with aftermarket stock. So the barrel would not sit in the stock or would that make it free floated and better?

I don’t know what to do. That was really quiet 😯 . Anyone know what kind of accuracy you an get with a short in the right barrel. Ill see if that company can tell me too.
I would have bought that 452 today, but the gun store had just sold the one they had in stock, or so he said.
If I went back to the 10/22 it would be manually operated unless I got the Volqurtzen conversion which would allow noise and gas to escape while cycling, correct? Also cost another $200.
Now the cheapest route may be my best route, because of another gun project and I need a new stereo receiver.
Assman83 would you like a 29 inch barrel for your Ruger 10-22. This barrel has the factory barrel taper, so you can swap the barrel and keep factory stock? Chambered for the long rifle or .22 Short bullet.

Trust me, after you shoot one of these for a while, you won’t pick up that 10/22. You’ll notice the 597 doesn’t even have a scope. That was the first time it has been shot in months. I don’t care for that rifle at all. The cz is fantastic though. 😀

Time to find that gun. I think I’ll check the local gunstore this weekend for a used one. Ran into some unexpected expenses today, or else I would have ordered a new one. We’ll see what they have , I hate going there cause its hard to leave with just one.

barrel twist makes a huge difference. i was in the middle of doing a test with the tc contender in 222 rem , with 29 grain cb cap bullets, when i bought the condor and have never gotten back to it yet
I don’t have a mold to cast for a 22 caliber bullet, so i bought some of the cb 29 grain bullets at cabela’s to try, for a gun that will shoot 1” and better groups with jacketed 50 grain loads at 100 yards i couldn’t get the 29 grain bullets to shoot under 1” reliably at 25 yards , this is with keeping the velocity under or at 1000 fps.
The twist of the barrel is 1-12” , i was going to buy a mold for a 50 or 55 grain bullet and try, but i might buy some of the bullets online that i have found first , when i get back to that project .
