.22 short shooters?
Hey guys,
I have about 1K invested on my 10/22 and I don’t use it. I want to convert it to .22 short with a kit from Volquartzen. My question is on ammo. The only rounds I’ve shot are CCI CB’s that go about 730fps, now Ive seen shorts that say anywhere from that to 1100. I want a nice quiet round that I could shoot all day like the CB’s at 730fps. Any suggestions, yes I would like more power, but not at the price of pissing people off.
How can they get a short to fire at over 1000fps when the bullet weighs the same as the CB bullet? Or could it be marked on the website as Short when its actually LR.
I did see some CCI’s that go 830fps which I may buy because I cant imagine they are too much louder, but could be wrong.
The weight on most I’ve found, if curious, is about 29gr.

Alrighty, here ya go. I don’t know how to do all that fancy crap where people put text in and tell you what is going on, so you have to see my ugly face and hear me talk. 😛
Maybe not the best comparison in the world, but it should give you a decent idea of noise difference. If you listen close you can hear the impact of the shots on trees right after the shot with the quieter ammo. The biggest difference I can tell with supersonic ammo is the echo. The crack seems to travel farther and bounce more, so it gives it an overall much noisier sound.

love my 20″ barrel with 1 in 9″ twist that really stabilizes those CCI SS 40 gr HP’s. Better than my older standard 1 in 16″ barrel. Groups are now on par with my airguns and i’ve seen about 1075 fps with the 40 gr SS ammo. Plenty of small game power, tons of accuracy, and not really loud.
Maybe not as quiet as shorts for sure but not really loud to me at all.
So are you recommending shooting the CB’s in a long barreled non auto .22lr or subsonic’s in a long barrel. I ask because the rifling that came out with the shorts is different than with long rifle.

AM, any rifling twist which stabilzes a LR will also stabilize a short. Besides, most barrels are 1 in 16″ and vary by only 1″ twist, so essentially they are all the same. faster twists stabilize HEAVIER bullets and lighter bullets are easier to stabilize than heavier ones. so if you have marginal stability with a given bullet your choices are go with lighter, shorter bullet or faster twist. but like i said, your choices in .22 barrels is minimal.

My experience with the Remington CB long rifle is very quiet, accurate and very under powered, drops about 9in below zero @ 30yds for subsonic / standard velocity rounds in my CZ452 21in barrel.
I recommend a rifle chambered for shorts only, if you go that route?
The CB long and CB long rifle should make good back yard bullets, regardless barrel length, longer barrel being quieter of course. I’d use the subsonic and standard velocity for hunting, though not that much louder.

assman, listen to lama. I have not calculated recently but I must have hundreds of thousands of rounds in .22 in competition and practice. Not counting the hunting 🙂
the barrel length is most important. there is no difference between subsonics and standard, they’re interchangeable. the shot to shot variance in velocity is so great in the bulk of .22 ammo that it exceeds the rated differences of 30 fps you were looking at. I get velocity readings that vary by over a hundred fps using the cb ammo. which i have cases of, by the way, as it can’t be beat for quietness. Look for old rifles, i used a remington 622 pump for the longest time, i think it came with a 30″ or 32″ barrel. i inherited that one from an old poacher who passed on. with the shorts, all the powder burns completely by the time the bullet exits the super long barrel. when shooting shorts and cbs, it is a completely legal rifle which is quieter than many silenced rifles shooting normal .22lr ammo. these days everyone wants a short barreled carbine; so if you want this kind of special purpose rifle you’ll have to look at very old remingtons, savages, some winchesters. or get someone to make you a superlong barrel and adapt it to your existing bolt or pump action. forget your 10-22, the bolt on your gun will open before the bullet exits the barrel so it will be loud no matter how long you make the barrel. unless you want to look for a bolt lock, like the JG, which is not worth it, in my opinion. too slow, too much work to use.

Oops, Ultra Lux and Varmint don’t match, Varmint has a barrel lug, Ultra lux don’t.
Mr-lama : have you ever taken the Ultra Lux off the stock, 2 receiver screws, maybe? The Varmint has one receiver screw, and one barrel lug screw.

Well there ya go.
I would make sure the 452 ultra lux and varmint have the same dimensions before I bought the stock for the ultra lux, but if they do and it will fit, that’ll work.
I have seen the varmint (shorter, heavier barrel) in the “tactical” configurations. Just don’t know if I have ever seen an ultra lux done up like that.

The link picture is a Ruger 10-22, but the link is for a Cz452 bolt action .22lr, they use same picture for all ” Tacticool ” stocks. May get one for my Cz452 Varmint .22lr.

That is the exact rifle I have. It must be a 28″ barrel. It’s been a while since I looked at the specs, I just know it is long. 😀
It has a scope rail on it. Just the normal dovetail rail. The iron sights make putting a scope on a bit of a pain. Mounts have to be higher than I would like, but it still works without any problems. I was told that the sight can be taken off with a little work, but I like to take the scope off and use them sometimes so I just mounted the scope higher and didn’t bother.

Now as far as stocks go, I don’t know of any. And the ones I have seen cost as much as the rifle. The other problem with it (in that perspective) is a bipod won’t mount to it. The front swivel is just too thin for one to fit. I don’t need a bipod on mine, so I never played with it, but I imagine all it would take is sticking a new swivel stud in there and a bipod would latch right on. But as far as the stock goes, unless you get one custom made you are pretty much stuck with what you have. You might could paint it black or something.

Yeah I noticed that too. 😛 I usually walk like that through the woods because if I try to walk normally, I will without a doubt fall down. So I risk you guys making fun of my bouncing around rather than you guys laughing hysterically when I bust my face on a log. 😛
