big-bore springers?
Make a long story short http://www.airgunadvice.net/viewtopic.php?t=15334 caught this post from a newbie asking about .25 cal HW80.
Well I had to nicely tell him not be silly. Just because the manufacturer is putting a larger barrel on a 17 cal power plant does not mean it is right. I tried to explain it.
Next thing you know the usual butt-heads come in with their 2 cents and their stories about 100 yard shooting with HW50s 😀
And we wonder why they sell us smooth twist barrels?
I thought we are supposed to teach people the right airgun principles.
You try to explain something to people that bigger caliber is sure is good provided you have that muzzle energy behind it.
I don’t get it… but I think airgun forums should be informative with the right information that teach people good, basic principles of airgunning and caliber selection.

Sorry, NYC. 😉 Your in the good part of NY.
Mass is pretty bad too.
ok now, NY is not bad minus the high taxes. head to wear i live 6 million acers in the adirondack park. small game hunting with air rifles approved last year although the law is kinda weird in that i can legally hunt a coyote with ANY airgun over 600FPS it should be a FPE limit but hey I am not complaining.
I have my CCW i CAN shoot lead pellets. Many good hunting laws and rights here!!!
now if i may get back to working on my .25 conversion for my XL1100 bitches!!
😆 he is already not sleeping for a week. Just look at the list he made for me to answer. 😆
Next you will see Parallax and Vulcanator here. So get some popcorn.. 😀 Maybe even the FX Ambassador will join us so we can talk about something more interesting then how cool the .25 springers are.
yep that is what it looks like… not my style though..
Alright you guys you are not being aggressive enough.
Please attack wildly and let see some real carnage on this bitch of a thread
continue to speak up and share your opinions and knowledge and you will be THE fun of the Internet. 😆
Boy VYD/Ambush Hunter your are entertaining 🙂 Did you think of this list yourself or somebody wrote it for you to pass it on to me 🙂 Looks like a collective write up to me.. 🙂
Anyway, Allow me to respond without hurting your or anyone else’s feelings..
Lets see which one will shoot past 50 yards, and which trajectory will be flatter. And which will generate greater penetration. You can do that by firing them both into a piece of wood. Maybe that will help you, since you don’t like reading “booklets”
It is better to be quiet if you call Gardew brothers work “paper booklets”. Please show websites which images I have shown in my reports “I have ripped off” without giving credibility to the source. Bullshit all I will say.
Good barrel is a must. Good triggers and stocks also. In making a valve consistent/good helps to know what you are actually doing and knowing them pcp and airgun principles,,, so I guess you need education and them booklets reading.
Correct 90-95% of springers with compressor diameter 25mm and piston stroke 100mm should be only made in .177. Why do you think FT shooters don’t shoot .22 HW80? > because they care about trajectory and want to knock down the target @50 yards.
12fpe UK .25 cal are. Your HW80 good to about 50 yards.
Yes… ideally
Get a Condor you will love to shoot at 100 yards too 🙂 backyard shooting will get old and fast.
How can you not love 100fpe .25 Condor?
Only to .22LR I compare airguns in the sence that now with PCP’s like the Condor, Sumatra 500cc, 80 fpe Ranger is now possible to hang with the powder burners.. And I think we need more guns like this.
Not everyone. As for what PW thinks I don’t know, never have talked with him..
After you start reading airgun books, and get your basics terms right dumb ass.
They usually, if they are picky for you clean the barrel or check your crown, or your gun
Really, where ME said that?
Many people I have talked to said those barrels don’t shoot. My theory why I stated on that forum. So did others for whom ST barrels didn’t work out openly spoke out against them..
Was the owner of many FX with LW barrels. ST barrels guns, yep I won’t touch. They ain’t fooling me 🙂 I Have a lot to say about FX. You bet because I have owned them, and actually took them apart 🙂 Which guns can you open up? And talk about? 😉
Wrong! I simply said they put out the best guns now for a pro use.. Look at Steyr and Walther
I said 150fpe. But you got me there.
IN DIAMETER, 16MM 🙂
Relevant if you have good barrel and want to shoot long range. Never said that power is the most important part of airguning.. but if you want to shoot to and past 100 yards it is one of the main components.
Remind me… what it is about..
Most 🙂 some even have a 3 joule law..:)
Never said that again! 🙂 I can give them good suggestions yes, if they want to be “ahead of the game” as they claim, others can too, but certainly not your backyard shooting crowd that buys ST barreled rifles 🙂
ST barrels are cheaper to make then fully rifled barrels, I don’t know who would argue with that. I said FX COULD try to experiment with .223 barrels if they get Royal to 70-80fpe. After all they are trying now to compete with Daystate. Wouldn’t it be fun to own one and shoot 30 grain stuff out of it.. You my like it too 🙂
If they use plastic spring guides or wrap the main spring inside a plastic tube, then they don’t. It will break and wear out fast.
Yep, even the best of them. The Chinese and Gamo sag after 500 shots. You would know it too if you would work on your own guns rather then repeat like a parrot what they tell you. Always pays to have a look inside rather then listen to somebody trying to sell you their mediocre lube tune job 🙂
YES SIR, THE BEST and ONLY… THE GOLD STANDARD.. ASK ALL THE FT SHOOTERS WORLD WIDE what they use 🙂
True, wouldn’t you love to have that stock on your HW100..
Springer caliber yes…
Hey don’t lump CA in with NJ & NY… It’s not that bad! 😆 They sure are trying to fuck up everyone’s fun though.
Pretty much just pcp. I have a IZH-46M pistol though. Had a TalonDor with 17,22 & 25 caliber barrels.
I have contemplated a TX200 in 17 for field target but i’m waiting on that since i’m currently waiting on a pcp FT rig.
It’s funny actually, I got the TalonSS in 17, then got a 22 cal barrel then a few Condor tanks and valves and really, really liked the 25 caliber much to my surprise! But i’m more of a paper puncher with airguns and the 25 is a bit over the top for that. I do miss it though!
I grew up with springers and never really like them that much but the technology sure has changed in the last 25-30 years!
The TX200 is very, very impressive in 17 and 22 calibers. 😯
Yes I realize that. I couldn’t live anywhere with such restrictions on fun…even though I am afraid one day we will experience something similar…just look and NY, NJ, and CA for the signs of it. I hope I am wrong. Synopsys, are you a strictly PCP shooter?
Thanks.
Ambush, you are aware there is a 12fpe power limit where the guy silverwolf lives right? 😉
Not many people get the FAC required to shoot over that power, if they do they typically get a real firearm to hunt and shoot with. The fact he is in the UK should have been a clear tip off, it’s not something I always remember either being in the USA. 😉
Shit, I won’t even buy a springer to shoot 177 pellets let alone 22 or 25, but I certainly won’t go telling people what they should do if they want to entertain such an idea.
No one in that thread spoke of a 12 FPE HW80. Skiff the Airgun God and Chief Ballistician simply assumed what he felt plausible to make his case. In fact, he had a huge problem with a 23FPE .25HW80 running at 730FPS with a Vortek tune, calling it a rock thrower. 😯 The last time I checked, this will deliver the same energy at 50 yards as .177 TX200 produces at the muzzle. This simply tells me he never hunted anything with an airgun. His knowledge is based on booklets written 16 years ago, internet forums, and photos he copies from others making look like it is his own ”research.” Blindly, he keeps pressing his opinionated agenda while completely rejecting others’ opinions and actual knowledge. Well, since I am off today, and since he asked me what shit he makes up on forums, let me just tell you what shit that is. This is the guy who:
Claims that a good barrel is all that is needed to have a good rifle. Yeah…never mind triggers, consistency, stocks, valves, etc.
Claims that .22 and .25 springers should not be manufactured at all.
Claims that springers are only good to 30 yards. (probably from that book he claims is a must read if you are a real airgunner).
Claims that all that UK shooters need to shoot are .177 guns due to their FPE restriction.
Fascinated with a magic 100 yard mark.
Fascinated with hyper velocities.
Constantly compares airguns with powderburners.
Claims that the best caliber for R1/HW80 is .177, despite the fact that everyone else disagrees, including Paul Watts and other tuners.
Needs to take reading comprehension classes, badly! (the first page of the second link is just one such example).
Claims that good barrels should not be projectile picky. Yeah…never mind my Krieger Match that doesn’t like anything but Norma and Hornady A-Max. And never mind LW barrels on airguns!
Doesn’t know the difference between cut barrels and pressed, yet keep arguing about their pros and cons.
Claims that FX Royale customers quietly selling their guns without saying a word, that’s how sorry they are…….
Don’t own any FX rifles but sure has a lot of shit to say about them.
Claims that real airgunners only need to shoot German and Austrian rifles!
Claims that .17HMR is a 100FPE cartridge…
Claims that 16mm barrels should be the standard for all airguns.
Claims that POWER is always relevant to ACCURACY. Even better, POWER is the most important aspect of airgunning.
Mentions Gamo and Weihrauch in the same sentence.
Claims all Europe has a 12FPE law.
Thinks he knows better how to run FX’s R&D!
Ben Taylor and Fredrik Axelsson are trying to cut on expenses inventing a “polished pipe.” He also suggests that Fredrik starts putting .223 barrels on Royals!
Claims that Vortek folks don’t have a clue what they are doing.
Claims that stock springs only last for 2-3 thousand shots…Geez.
Claims that a V-Mach kit is the best and only option to tune a springer…
Claims that heavy target barrels and Accuracy International stocks are where the market is. LMAO!
Claims that compression chamber and piston stroke are the ONLY factors worth considering when choosing a springer.
And all this garbage is black on white below… :thumb: Need I say more?
http://www.airgunadvice.net/viewtopic.php?t=15393&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
i started airgunning with a 10 ft lb .22 air gun as a 10 yr old kid. and when i did not know that 10 ft lbs was too weak i must have killed a shit load of crows at ranges more than 30 yds. i also used the normal iron sights as the gun did not have a scope mounting rail.
i had almost purchased a HW 80 in .177 ( got antsy waiting for the tx) and was talked out of it by a good friend. what i read was that the HW platform is good in FAC mode only and that it was excellent in .22 cal. that said the quality of guns made in europe and america is so good that i doubt that a sub 12 ft lb gun would suck. and as compared to the IHP (decent barrel made on hammerli machines ) airguns i used would be stellar in all aspects.
if someone wants to lob .25 pellets at the speeds i was lobbing .22 pellets with a much better gun let him. to each his own !
Yes, sir. I was also a member of the original Talon forum before the new administration took over 😉
Lol, .25 at 12fpe is a popular rig for ratting at 30 yrds and under here in the UK.
The one thing the OP didn’t mention is 12fpe is the limit for fpe in the UK unless you have a fac certificate…
So he would have to shoot 30 grain 25 caliber pellets at 450fps to conform to the regulations and I believe it’s muzzle velocity too… 😕
Not sure about the results even at 25 yards but it doens’t appear to be too promising to me. 😉
