Q:

Dr. Steele’s Cricket finds a new owner this evening

Well, I’m gonna give that favorite little Edgun shorty some compact company as I got a hold of Steve again this evening and was able to purchase a special little used Cricket Compact Skeleton Stock in .22 just as I was wanting.

I feel fortunate in that this is a used gun with some nice tuning work from Ernest and has both the original and a N.C. moderator with an optional extension and was the gun previously belonging to the late Dr. Steel here on our forum. I have to say I am a bit sentimental and would much rather have this gun than a new one, it will always seem special to me. Rest in Peace brother, your gun will be in caring hands, enjoyed as you would have wanted and well kept in pristine condition and I will be honored to look after it for you.

Steve is as nice and good to deal with as everyone says !! Two thumbs up !!

Ernest – what pressure should the Reg be set at for a .177 Compact ? What about the valve spring tension ?? Also – what pellet speed do you think it´s best for that gun and what pellet weight ??
Your answer would save me a lot of testing time …

Reg set at 115b, 1/2 turn valve spring tension, 880-890fps shooting 10.3g jsb , out of the box was shooting 940fps 10.3g, didn’t check accuracy—was just to hot for me.

I could have ended up with a free plastic stock if I did it that way but the price is the same.

I did like the looks of the CF shrouds and will think about that. The scope decision is the toughest for me.

I used the Combro yesterday to tweak the ,22 Cricket back to 900 fps with the all-metal valve. No scope adjustment was needed. I also finally put one of those Finnish HS adjustors on and plan on putting the other on the baby Cricket.

Great! I ordered mine with a Plastic Fantastic but i´ll have a WST/Skeleton delivered with it. That little rifle will probably see a lot of action so i figured it better have the plastic stock. Keep the WST for show. I got a great idea when i saw Shanu´s /Ride´s Cricket so i´ll have that same kind of CF piece made for under the scope rail – for both the .177 and .25. The .177 will also get a bit shorter CF shroud so it matches the air tube length , like the one i have on the .25 , and also have an extra CF Muffler made to it. Just like the bigger Brother .25. That will make the Compact 590mm (23″) long , without the extra Suppressor ! :suprisedn:

Good! Do yourself a favor and put a little PTFE tape over them threads on the Brass part of the adjuster – or actually it´s only needed if it wants to move while firing. Keep an eye on that. The Mk II is better – the plastic part is shorter while the brass spring guide is much longer.

Compact Cricket .177 w/ Skeleton and cheek piece from Wild West. I think it comes maybe with a tuning from Ernest but I will wait on that if it is true until I shoot it a while. 🙂

That actually sounds like fun! Which stock/model did you order ?

Please shot the heck out of it, out of the box–the cocking could be rough ——-> cocking plate need to honed, the trigger 2 stage is to long—-adjust screw under the leaf spring. now continue waiting.

I guess I didn’t post that I was invaded by a huge flock of starlings two days ago when I thought my Cricket had broken (user error instead). There were several hundred of them raiding the rotten persimmons on the ground under a persimmon tree as it was snowing. By the time the carnage was over and I switched to my .25 Matador with Predators the Cricket and Matador had dispatched over 40 of the little buggers throughout the day. I could get 3-4 and then they would take off but always come back in 5 minutes or so. I even got 2 with one shot when they lined up. :fishing: I immediately ordered up the baby Cricket after that entertainment.

I am addicted to high magnification as well like a sugar junky. :suprisedn: I like to see their whiskers. 😛

The Search function doesn’t seem to work but I was able to find the thread where Shanu went after the Leupold scope. On my baby Cricket .177 I want the parallax focus down to 10 yards and I know Leupold will do that for me. 10-100 yards would be perfect for the .177 or even .22.

About $800 but optics rival the best.

Leupold 4.5-14×50 Side focus 30mm 16.5 oz. Varmint Hunters Reticle.

Ordered the VX-3L 4.5-14×50 scope customized with parallax focus 25-150 yards, M1 turrets, and varmint hunter reticle. Pretty much a custom Mark 4, but lighter. All under 19oz. Should be near perfect for a compact .22 cricket! I’m having Earnest tune the cricket to 25-28 fpe so I can get 40 shots. Any feedback on this would be appreciated.

It´s all good except for one thing : 14x doesn´t cut it for me much beyond 50 meters and for BR that would only work out to 35 meters or so. For hunting and plinking that scope should be about as good as they come.

That is one good looking , compact Bullpup ! :suprisedn:

Thanks for the kind words Hemm, I am happy to be the one to get his gun. I have a couple others that are from close friends that have past. They are very special to me. I am very curious about his Cricket as I have scanned all of his posts and found stark few mentions of the gun. I found mention of the tuning Ernst done and of the NC Moderator / LDC and talk about the scoping decisions but almost no mention of him ordering the gun or anticipation of it arriving ?? I am still not sure if he ever got to see it or shoot it for that matter. I will ask Steve at WWAG when we talk next time.

Ernst, do you happen to know if the gun made it to Shanu before his passing ???

In the mean time this is a hard gun to figure out how to best scope it, A gut wants it all on this one cause of the compactness. It would seem top heavy and terribly over scoped with my HK-4010 Hawkes I like so well. But it may get one anyway. I like over scoping but the top heavy part will make me shop and study a good deal first.

I used the air max EV 3x9mm for testing at 30y and shooting dime size group. same one I used on the .177 compact—just love the wide view—wider then the 42mm tactical.

Unless it han not been requested, I would not say this and rain on someones parade. Lupy scoopes are tough, and with great features. But They in NO WAY have comparable optics to the better scopes. Not even in the same ball park. Good competent glass, yes. Superb, No. 🙁

Brother Hemn, I do not use my name as I was at one time a very well known name in the custom knife world, and had to retire due to medica reasons. But I am easily found under the links at the bottom of all my post. My name is Mike, or Michael

And if the avatar was a bit bigger, you could read it on the blades of the Knife Shown. 😉

Here’s the photo Dr. Steele Compact before shipping it to him. I waited 3 weeks till I had Neil CF shroud kit, I ask him to make the middle CF a little longer so I can fit it in a way–when rotated it will have a tight fit. this is all Dr. Steele ideas I just made it happen, been talking for weeks in how to create his Dream Bullpub. I even gave my red coral single shot tray because he insisted having one in stone it was my 1st tray I made. it was a joy working with him. If I only knew that Steve had it===I would have bought it. Take care of it—it has meaningful Value, I’m first to take it if you ever want to ?????.

Just remember He wanted it shooting 33fpe 30+ shots but was getting only 25 shots, so I lowered it to 30fpe with 32shots.
