Q:

EDgun Matador R3 versus Kalibr Cricket, my comparison….

Hi guys,

Warning for those who don’t like images:

This is going to be a thread with lots of graphics….. 😉

As promised, I’ll try to share with you my personal opinion and findings while comparing these beauties:

As some of you may know, I have two Matador Std R3s and I have one Cricket (with access to another one). All are cal.22……

My wait for my Matadors should be well documented on this very forum…..

The Crickets were a part of a group buy masterminded from Europe somewhere. The Crickets were shipped in parts to Norway and reassembled by my good blueprinting friend Egon Olsen. In the process he had to remove a “restrictor” screw that had been put into the guns before shipment. Most probably because of Power limitation rules at origin….

The Crickets arrived with no documents whatsoever. No instructions, – no nothing. I don’t think this is standard procedure though…..

The Cricket weighs less than the R3, – and is approx 5 cm shorter. Not a lot, – but overall it makes the Cricket even easier to handle than the already tiny R3….

The side by side comparison was done from my modest little shooting table at my summerhouse:

– and the shooting range is here, – with my target set up at 46mts:

Why 46 mts ? Simply because I could not pull my shooting stand further back right now. A huge tree has fallen during winter, and all the branches have taken up my space… 👿

First problem: How to fill the f…. Cricket ?

The fillprobe nut is so tiny that a standard foster coupling gasket will not seal. The entire probe is small, – and you fear you may break it while trying to tighten it:

The above (sorry for the image quality) is a comparison between ED’s, Cricket’s and Falcon’s fill probes. You can probably see what I mean….

As I could not make a standard Fostergasket fit, Egon had to make special gaskets that we fitted into the Foster coupling itself. Not an ideal solution, – and I have no clue how long it will last…….. 🙄

On the fill probe: Matador 1, Cricket 0 points.

Air filling:

I honestly dont like any of the solutions that these two manufacturers have chosen………..

The Cricket people have come up with the worst. To expose the hole for the fillprobe, – you have to slide forward the tip of the reservoir. But that stupid tip is retained by a spring, – and slides back with a smack once you let go:

If you’re not careful when taking the fillprobe back out, the tip will spring back and ruin the fill probe O-rings faster than I can say my name….

While filling, the “tip” rests on the previously mentioned small nut. And there’s not a lot clearance. So a bigger nut (for those with lathe skills), – is not going to help you much. A thicker nut might…….

In short: A very stupid filling system, – BUT once you know how to operate it and care is taken, – at least it covers the hole when filling is over.

The Matador does not come with anything to cover the filling hole at all:

I use tape right now, – but a plug of some sort would be good….. 😉

My preferred system would be that of Falcon:

The tip of the reservoir has been turned into a curled “collar” that you rotate to expose the hole. Simple, easy and effective. And few moving parts that may break or go astray……….

Now, I have no idea how much air I can fill into the Cricket, – and the gun gauge certainly does not help much:

I trust the gauge on my fillkit, – and 3000 psi is roughly on the border between green and yellow…….

Points for airfill procedure: Matador 1, Cricket 0. In my opinion….. 😉

Cheers from Trygve 😀

To be continued……….. 😀

(if you so desire…… 😳 )

What is the LOA of the shortest .25 Cricket?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQP3pkUPPYw 14 shots for 95meters !!!

Un unexpected turn of events 😀 😀 😀

Ed, thank you for the reassurance that my sclerosis is not as bad as I thought 😉

Can’t wait…

🙂

Thank you Zoco and Octavius.

I’ll try to get an HW 100 probe and hope it will do the job.

🙂

Hello Joe 🙂 unfortunately with cricket is not compatible the probe for Edgun and HW100 😕 is little bit narrow for cricket. It is like with nokia mobile phones each model had different power connector. Would be useful for each user be defined one standard of quickfill probe 😉
Have a nice day everyone. ciao

Good information octavius 😀 I wonder if there is a crossover fill probe for the Crickets ❓ Have a good day ciao 😎

What I know is possible to use probe from HW100 😀 Guys with both guns are filling them only with one probe 💡

Hi Koljo,

Great news !!!

About fill probe, – may be you can find some help here…:

http://www.talonairgun.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12134&sid=1fadfcb763a8e75d23691e98bdafab53 😀

Has anybody tried a non original fillprobe on an EDgun ??

😀

Good news at last 😀

I have received my .25 R3 Standard back from Ed after some repairs he performed on the moderator.

Unfortunately, I can’t test the gun myself due to an inexplicable for my age disappearance of the filling port/adapter 🙄 🙄 🙄

I am very happy to have the gun back but would be even happier if someone has an EDgun air filling adapter to spare.

Thanks in advance,

Nik 🙂

I am building an adaptor to measure the reg pressure and stability..

Now this is an idea to my liking !!! My good friend Egon did this some time back and fitted a gauge to the reg chamber of a completely rebuilt DS Huntsman in order to see how quickly the reg chamber filled after each shot and also to find the best reg pressure. The world would have been a better place if all reg chambers had visible gauges and even better an outside regulator adjustment option…….. 😉

I will post some pics and video as soon.

YES !!!!! 😀 😀 😀

Otherwise you’ll experience an eternal ban from this forum and all others…. 😉

Cheers
Trygve 😀

This is sadness only…… 😥

ED has just returned from a skiing holiday with his daughters in Finland. I think it is nice he takes time with his kids in all this, – but hopefully he will catch up/show up again and answer some of our questions here…

His credibility is at stake if he doesn’t…….. 😥

That said, he has plenty of time for his own Russian blog…….

And while on, – may I mention: The Kalibr people has just launched a new forum and a new website. Not that it is extremely interesting, – but try Google and see for yourself:

Cheers from trygve in Chaos in Lanzarote…. 🙁

Hoot, this guy is funnier than you.

No, Trygve, the gun has still not been returned to me 😕

At Ed’s suggestion I sent back my very inaccurate R3 Standard last September. In late November I got an e-mail from him saying that he had changed the moderator and that the gun was, apparently, shooting good. He also wrote to me: “Andrey will send it to you back next week, hopefully!”

Well, I never heard from Andrey or Ed since then? Ed didn’t even bother to reply to my reminder nearly a month ago. He obviously has no understanding for the feelings of a perfectly correct customer like me, who has fulfilled his part of the deal. I feel hurt, disappointed and cheated…

😯 😯 😯

My Dear Friend Nik,

Via my improvised powersupply in Lanzarote:

This is REALLY bad news. Reminds me of my own waiting and lack of /faulty communication etc. Ed should comment on this immediately. This does not sound like him at all, – or does it ???

Andrey is known to be slow, – but this is way over the top…..

Ed, – what’s going on here ??? 🙄

I received my quarter R3 In December but Ed promised my spare valve , which I payed 3 years ago along with my first Matador, and a XXL T-shirt and a coffee mug, free of charge, although I wanted to pay for them, as a bonus for me waiting as long. I never received those with my gun , and I sent a email to Ed :

“Hi Edward,
There is no spare valve in the package and no coffee mug and no XXL T-shirt.
I know you are a man of your word and you will send them to me.
My address is: … ”

After almost 20 days, when my hopes were next to none, I received an email from Ed that the mugs are not in stock, and as soon he has them he will send the valve/mug/t-shirt to me. He expect to send my package in January.

I think Ed is so busy that even if it takes 1-2 months to reply to emails, you could qualify his emails “on time”.

Yes… and what you did is funny

Are you like…”intelligent”, or something?

I built a plywood stand to hold my chrony, and everyone laughed at me!

Puzzled….

Kindly ‘Ol Uncle H 😯 😯 t

Tnx 1Oldguy2, I can assure it does not happen often.

The shipment arrived at the end of Nov last year…..it was a shopping frenzy.
They were sold out in few days! I think there are around 50 Crickets sold and what I can read on the forums are very positive.
Some of the shot strings posted are more or less the same 5- 12fps spread over 40-50 shots
I cannot think that this is now some sort of a super accurate “wonder” air rifle that came to life, but it seems to work quite well. What is amazing to me is the fact that placing pellets on a target is with much less effort than ever before, perhaps the compact design makes it easier.

I will post some pics and video as soon.
