Q:

EDgun Matador R3 versus Kalibr Cricket, my comparison….

Hi guys,

Warning for those who don’t like images:

This is going to be a thread with lots of graphics….. 😉

As promised, I’ll try to share with you my personal opinion and findings while comparing these beauties:

As some of you may know, I have two Matador Std R3s and I have one Cricket (with access to another one). All are cal.22……

My wait for my Matadors should be well documented on this very forum…..

The Crickets were a part of a group buy masterminded from Europe somewhere. The Crickets were shipped in parts to Norway and reassembled by my good blueprinting friend Egon Olsen. In the process he had to remove a “restrictor” screw that had been put into the guns before shipment. Most probably because of Power limitation rules at origin….

The Crickets arrived with no documents whatsoever. No instructions, – no nothing. I don’t think this is standard procedure though…..

The Cricket weighs less than the R3, – and is approx 5 cm shorter. Not a lot, – but overall it makes the Cricket even easier to handle than the already tiny R3….

The side by side comparison was done from my modest little shooting table at my summerhouse:

– and the shooting range is here, – with my target set up at 46mts:

Why 46 mts ? Simply because I could not pull my shooting stand further back right now. A huge tree has fallen during winter, and all the branches have taken up my space… 👿

First problem: How to fill the f…. Cricket ?

The fillprobe nut is so tiny that a standard foster coupling gasket will not seal. The entire probe is small, – and you fear you may break it while trying to tighten it:

The above (sorry for the image quality) is a comparison between ED’s, Cricket’s and Falcon’s fill probes. You can probably see what I mean….

As I could not make a standard Fostergasket fit, Egon had to make special gaskets that we fitted into the Foster coupling itself. Not an ideal solution, – and I have no clue how long it will last…….. 🙄

On the fill probe: Matador 1, Cricket 0 points.

Air filling:

I honestly dont like any of the solutions that these two manufacturers have chosen………..

The Cricket people have come up with the worst. To expose the hole for the fillprobe, – you have to slide forward the tip of the reservoir. But that stupid tip is retained by a spring, – and slides back with a smack once you let go:

If you’re not careful when taking the fillprobe back out, the tip will spring back and ruin the fill probe O-rings faster than I can say my name….

While filling, the “tip” rests on the previously mentioned small nut. And there’s not a lot clearance. So a bigger nut (for those with lathe skills), – is not going to help you much. A thicker nut might…….

In short: A very stupid filling system, – BUT once you know how to operate it and care is taken, – at least it covers the hole when filling is over.

The Matador does not come with anything to cover the filling hole at all:

I use tape right now, – but a plug of some sort would be good….. 😉

My preferred system would be that of Falcon:

The tip of the reservoir has been turned into a curled “collar” that you rotate to expose the hole. Simple, easy and effective. And few moving parts that may break or go astray……….

Now, I have no idea how much air I can fill into the Cricket, – and the gun gauge certainly does not help much:

I trust the gauge on my fillkit, – and 3000 psi is roughly on the border between green and yellow…….

Points for airfill procedure: Matador 1, Cricket 0. In my opinion….. 😉

Cheers from Trygve 😀

To be continued……….. 😀

Mater that is some fine shooting 😀 There still are doubters out there about these little Crickets but this should help clear some minds. I too have shot groups like this but not that far out… yet…. 😀

Outstanding 😯 😯 😎

Tnx Mike.
I was surprised myself at this one and sadly there were nobody around to witness what was at the time awesome.
I tried a few days later to replicate the grouping, but it was impossible.
The wind was blowing outside so there must have been some kind of draft inside the factory.

I used JSB 15,89gr batched pellets.
I am in the proses of getting a R3, cant wait any more!!!!!

Mater,

I think I’ll go slip on some taller boots – just kidding. Mighty impressive groups there especial the one at approximately 95 yards. Looks to be 1/2 “ or better and 14 shot group mind you! Any time you can put 14 shots in one hole at those ranges the gun and shooter are one in harmony!! What pellet? Keep the testing / groups coming. I can see myself purchasing one of these bugs in the near future, but may hold out to see what the .25 can offer, after all I have an Eddy .22 R3 that I’m happy with.

Hi, I am new to the forum and are located in South Africa.
I enjoyed reading this thread very much…. thanks for all the info
I have two Crickets and they are both consistent and accurate.
Here is an shot string I took in December 2012 after reading zocoloco’s request for more Kalibr shot strings.

This is a target that I shot indoors
Left 40m, right 60m and bottom 87m all were 14 shot groups

Am I correct to understand that equates to roughly $1,350 U.S. Dollars?

I can’t find anything on the internet about the sale, and I doubt the U.S. distributors are pushing their $2,000 USD Crickets for $700 off retail.

I might be interested in one if they are that inexpensive. Which, incidentially, was about the price I was quoted from a dealer in the Netherlands late last year when his shipment was enroute.

Anyone know what the U.S. price really is?

Thanks my friend…… 😀

Apparently this thread lives a life of it’s own, – regardless of new postings. Just checked and for the record, – there are several hundred views every single day. 78641 views right now. On Dec 13th the number of hits was some 63700………

I don’t know how to interpret these figures apart from a huge interest in the topic. But I don’t understand this rapid growth even when there are no new postings…..

At the same time I have noticed that Kalibrgunusa has lowered their price and call it “sale”. What does this mean ? Is the interest in the Cricket so little that the US market cannot absorb 100 units (50 units from each of the importers) even after the gun has been hyped up as much as it has…?

I am confused now……..

Not the first time…….. 😳 😳 😳

No, Trygve, the gun has still not been returned to me 😕

At Ed’s suggestion I sent back my very inaccurate R3 Standard last September. In late November I got an e-mail from him saying that he had changed the moderator and that the gun was, apparently, shooting good. He also wrote to me: “Andrey will send it to you back next week, hopefully!”

Well, I never heard from Andrey or Ed since then? Ed didn’t even bother to reply to my reminder nearly a month ago. He obviously has no understanding for the feelings of a perfectly correct customer like me, who has fulfilled his part of the deal. I feel hurt, disappointed and cheated…

My Dear Friend Nik,

Via my improvised powersupply in Lanzarote:

This is REALLY bad news. Reminds me of my own waiting and lack of /faulty communication etc. Ed should comment on this immediately. This does not sound like him at all, – or does it ???

Andrey is known to be slow, – but this is way over the top…..

Ed, – what’s going on here ??? 🙄

Trygve we’ll miss all your input but have a good trip. I hope your house project goes well. 😀

I started having problems with rpms changing in my R3.In the regulator there’s a small nylon seat that the adjuster seals against. I think it was suppose to be a press fit, mine was loose. I remade this part with a press fit and gun shoots great. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL

quote zocoloco:

I got that too…… 😉

Probably not what Koljo is looking for……

Nik, – has he not returned your gun yet ??? 😯 😯 😯

Translation –

Friends,

Happy New Year! They say that a leap year is always bad, I do not know, it seems that we live in a different reality, this year was very good for all of us. We have increased the number of products more than doubled, with better quality (hopefully) on the other hand number of people willing to buy our products also increased, and we continue to have such a shameful and still persist phenomenon as “zhdunstvo.” Solemnly promise to make every effort to eradicate this shameful, for a society consumed s, events next year!

But seriously, I want to make next year for all of us did not carry any shocks, either in personal life or in the life of our country, that we all had the opportunity to work, earn money that we need to raise our children to good people give them a good education, to enjoy life in all its manifestations.

I am very pleased that this year we spent together, I am pleased that through our work, we have so many friends in many countries. And know that you are the most important thing that we have – after all we are working for you and try to do something new (only about mnogozaryadku not need to write to me!) And we will continue to work!

I embrace you all,
Your Edward and all the employees of SIA “EDgan.”

Happy days in Lanzarote, my friend!

Your enthusiasm and dedication to our hobby have been of great moral support in a very painfull for me 2012 😉

BTW, after paying Ed 1200 perfectly good euros back in July, all I have to my credit from him at the moment is this e-mail:
