Q:

EDgun Matador R3 versus Kalibr Cricket, my comparison….

Hi guys,

Warning for those who don’t like images:

This is going to be a thread with lots of graphics….. 😉

As promised, I’ll try to share with you my personal opinion and findings while comparing these beauties:

As some of you may know, I have two Matador Std R3s and I have one Cricket (with access to another one). All are cal.22……

My wait for my Matadors should be well documented on this very forum…..

The Crickets were a part of a group buy masterminded from Europe somewhere. The Crickets were shipped in parts to Norway and reassembled by my good blueprinting friend Egon Olsen. In the process he had to remove a “restrictor” screw that had been put into the guns before shipment. Most probably because of Power limitation rules at origin….

The Crickets arrived with no documents whatsoever. No instructions, – no nothing. I don’t think this is standard procedure though…..

The Cricket weighs less than the R3, – and is approx 5 cm shorter. Not a lot, – but overall it makes the Cricket even easier to handle than the already tiny R3….

The side by side comparison was done from my modest little shooting table at my summerhouse:

– and the shooting range is here, – with my target set up at 46mts:

Why 46 mts ? Simply because I could not pull my shooting stand further back right now. A huge tree has fallen during winter, and all the branches have taken up my space… 👿

First problem: How to fill the f…. Cricket ?

The fillprobe nut is so tiny that a standard foster coupling gasket will not seal. The entire probe is small, – and you fear you may break it while trying to tighten it:

The above (sorry for the image quality) is a comparison between ED’s, Cricket’s and Falcon’s fill probes. You can probably see what I mean….

As I could not make a standard Fostergasket fit, Egon had to make special gaskets that we fitted into the Foster coupling itself. Not an ideal solution, – and I have no clue how long it will last…….. 🙄

On the fill probe: Matador 1, Cricket 0 points.

Air filling:

I honestly dont like any of the solutions that these two manufacturers have chosen………..

The Cricket people have come up with the worst. To expose the hole for the fillprobe, – you have to slide forward the tip of the reservoir. But that stupid tip is retained by a spring, – and slides back with a smack once you let go:

If you’re not careful when taking the fillprobe back out, the tip will spring back and ruin the fill probe O-rings faster than I can say my name….

While filling, the “tip” rests on the previously mentioned small nut. And there’s not a lot clearance. So a bigger nut (for those with lathe skills), – is not going to help you much. A thicker nut might…….

In short: A very stupid filling system, – BUT once you know how to operate it and care is taken, – at least it covers the hole when filling is over.

The Matador does not come with anything to cover the filling hole at all:

I use tape right now, – but a plug of some sort would be good….. 😉

My preferred system would be that of Falcon:

The tip of the reservoir has been turned into a curled “collar” that you rotate to expose the hole. Simple, easy and effective. And few moving parts that may break or go astray……….

Now, I have no idea how much air I can fill into the Cricket, – and the gun gauge certainly does not help much:

I trust the gauge on my fillkit, – and 3000 psi is roughly on the border between green and yellow…….

Points for airfill procedure: Matador 1, Cricket 0. In my opinion….. 😉

Cheers from Trygve 😀

To be continued……….. 😀

My question was: Is the shown breech within your acceptable limits ? Would you yourself have accepted a breech with a bore like the one above ?

Yes or no ????

Cheers Trygve 😀

Yes, I have. Every stage of the production development has narrow places, when you overcome them it is called progress 🙂 You haven’t seen my first guns… 🙂

quote Ed:

I changed that part. Now, at the alluminium breech, the fix is made by the special steel rod, 5 mm diameter to the bolt. People in USA and Europe will get the guns with new breech and can value it.

Thanks ED, – but I know that. Your answer clearly demonstrates what I mean by your ability to “shy away from a “difficult” question”…. 😉

OK ED, – that I can accept. I believe you on that one…….. 😉

I’ll repeat my question:

quote zocoloco:

ED, – me again, – sorry:

Another interesting detail can be revealed from the same image:

On the left side of the visible part of the bolt, – you can clearly see how the ridges and grooves of the breech bore have painted an image of themselves in the grease. And how different that part of the bore appears from the rest of it. Can you imagine the feel of the bolt ball bearing as it travels across this “terrain”…???? Proof good enough that my bore can never provide a smooth cocking action………. 😉

Do you still say this is within your “acceptable limits” and that all R3 breech bores are the same ????

I expect a simple “Yes” or “No” answer to the above question…….. 😉

Cheers 😀

This has been cut and pasted from a post further up…

Forget the red arrow in this respect, – kindly answer my question about the breeches…..

Got it ????

Cheers from Trygve 😀

he seems to have a tendency to shy away from “difficult” questions

No way, sir, I even cannot follow my own forum 🙂

I would agree as well….. 😉

If you forget the price for a second, – in my opinion the really big difference is between multishot (Cricket) and single shot (Matador)…..

The other differences may seem less important to many. However in the long run, – serviceability may be crucial. The Matador R3 is easier to service and keep going thanks to it’s simplicity…..

Air efficiency is better in the R3 than the Cricket. You get more shots from one fill from the R3…..

We have very little evidence of Long range accuracy (50 mts pluss), but my guess is the R3 is better. Also it is more powerful (.22)…

Although ED has not been willing to comment on my questions related to substandard breeches (he seems to have a tendency to shy away from “difficult” questions), history has shown clear prooofs of his commitment and passion for what he is doing. My gut feeling tells me we may have a better follow up from him than from Maverick…

ED’s own Russian blog is interesting reading. He clearly demonstrates his pride and passion for his guns. He has even quoted letters from US buyers (one of which is well known on this forum) to show his Russian compatriots some of the international reactions to what he is doing…..

If I should have to choose between the R3 and the Cricket, – I would most likely have stayed with the Matador……… 😀

At least that’s where I am right now…… 😉

Cheers from Oslo 😀

Ok, so after reading 15 pages, you can formulate an opinion one way or the other. Does anyone have a new model that they would like to comment on? Thank you loco for your fine assessment. I’m thinking of buying one but would like to hear some other first hand accounts.

Two grand USD is a bunch of money to risk on an unknown product, so I have to agree with MG here!

What is needed are customer pics, strings, fps, fpe, pellet weights, and close up looks at some of the products.

If you are going to spend as much as an Edgun costs, on something that isn’t an Edgun, you certainly want something that going to be pretty damn good!!!

PS: There’s yet another official Cricket dealer now:

I think I’ll go for this one………. 😉

Good choice, Trygve 😆

BTW, is she SS or MS? 😉

Friend Nik from beautiful Bansko

Hey HOOT she’s an Okie 😯 At least she’s the person who brought me my new Cricket….. 🙂 Only problem is I can not get her to leave and my wife is getting pissed. She’s not buying the part that Zocoloco sent her over to show me how to work the Cricket 🙄

Is she Russian or Czech????

How could you post such information without your usual credible details?

Yours in puzzlement…

PS: When I was young I dated a girl who looked just like that, was a nudist, vegetarian, and believed in free love…back in the early ’70’s!!!

But, my wife said I had to stop seeing here. Seem’s like there’s always something…

I have had a few .22 Ultras in FAC configuration, – and they’re not too bad. But the need for genuine BSA barrels (short ones) on my HW100s gave them a short life. The BSA Ultra .22 barrels perform very well indeed (the old ones), – and that’s why I’m tempted to try one in .25 on R3/Cricket. That said, the original barrel supplied by ED for the R3 is probably just as good, – the Cricket in .25 I have not tested……..

Talking of Crickets, – here’s another review for those interested. (Use Google to translate):

I can’t wait to see what reactions/impressions people are getting now that the Crickets seem to be swamping the US marketplace…….

Particularly keen on potential differences between the original Russian made ones and the ones out of the new factory in CZ……… 😀

So come on guys, – don’t be shy……… 😉

Cheers from Oslo 😀

PS: There’s yet another official Cricket dealer now:

I think I’ll go for this one………. 😉

Given the Ultra’s 5.5mm FAC performance in the low 700 fps, I cannot help but wonder how much more could be wrung out of the .25, without serious valve modifications, or other power mods.

This is a tiny pcp, and even Ed refuses to stretch the Leya that far.

follow the link stats further dowm.. http://www.bsaguns.co.uk/airgun_ultra.php

only the lonestar and scorpion SE available in .25 according to the link

one of the airgun mags as a feature running with some guy on a farm useing a .25 ultra along side various others he uses. will see if i can find more info not the 1st time bsa have been behind in updating that log.. 🙂

i have had it confirmed by malc barnard country pursuits tv and aka ghostmaker who as been working closely with bsa recently that bsa have issued an ultra .25..

thats what i thought tony,, 🙄 but the power curve was proper shite.
and about 8/10 shots more but cos it was 25 cal it had no range ,tbo

the 22 was better my mate had ,,better range and the curve was a little less then the 25,, but 30 shots for 350/400 £ gun is a bad move in my books ,but hey thats just my 2p worth you might like them..
