EDgun scopes

Thanks Guys. If anyone has Strelok Pro you can check out the reticle there or I think there maybe some pics of it on the board somewhere. (Just added reticle pic above).

The rail is factory Edgun. All Edguns have this rail and I believe it(the rail)has ~20moa built into it. Scope tube is 34mm. Scope is a 12×44 so 12x (fixed) magnification. Side focus and parallax free from 15yds out. I got mine from Edgunwest here in the US. I think he has a few so drop him a line about cost and availability: edgunwest@gmail.com. KS should also have a video review coming soon (no pressure) which will have some more details about the scope and its performance.

Just got this in from Edgun West (thanks KS) and mounted onto my Gen 1 .30.

Overall impression is very positive. A well executed scope with very good fit and finish. Love the low profile positive click 1/10 mil turrets. Reticle subtensions are super clean and crisp. Optics are very good at this price point. The mounts that came with the scope are more than adequate for a PCP. A very good compliment to the Edgun .30 (or any Edgun or high end PCP for that matter).

Both the mounts in your pictures are Gen 2, you can tell by the milled groove connecting the two centermost screws on the upper rings. The Gen 1 mounts don’t have that feature.

Notice on the upper rings how thin the web gets at the 4x outside screws. That’s the failure point when they decide to let go. Not sure why Hakan made them that thin. Sure, it looks cool, but there isn’t much material there to take the load. My one ring that failed appeared to have been machined a little heavy on the chamfer which left the top of that thin web at almost a knife edge.

The screw pattern and ring profile was altered to thicken that area, lots more material adjacent to the outside screws now.

I agree, Sphur is very responsive. When I had the failure I sent them an email with pictures and in less than 24 hours I had a tracking number for the replacement part shipped from their distributor here in the US (Mile High Shooting Accessories.)

IMO the Gen 2 versions should correct the cracking issue at the outer web of the upper rings, the screw spacing and clamp profile were changed to allow a thicker web. The picatinny clamp bars appear unchanged between Gen 1 and Gen 2 so the possibility of a failure still exists– but since I’ve only had one fail I’m not too concerned. Much like the upper rings, a little added material on the clamp bar wouldn’t be a bad idea IMO.

Even though I’ve only had one upper ring crack, it’s always in the back of my head and I’d like the peace of mind to swap all my Gen 1 mounts out for Gen 2’s. Unfortunately given the cost difference between buying new Gen 2’s and selling the Gen 1’s it would probably be about $1500 to upgrade all the Gen 1’s I have in the safe. I’ll pass on that for now, there are better things to spend the money on. :rofl:

Parrots, FYI… you have the ring caps switched on your Spuhr mounts. The caps with the lines in them are supposed to go on the back behind the scope turret so the lines can serve as an additional visual reference for your elevation & windage alignment marks. Had to point it out, my OCD kicked in. :biggrinn:

Sphur mounts are good stuff (I think I have 13 or 14 of them at the moment) and do have nice features like the leveling wedge, built in level, and the accessory interfaces but they’re not the end all of the scope mounting world. Over the years, when it comes to scope rings and one piece mounts I’ve used Nightforce, Seekins, Armalite, ARC, Larue, Burris, Leupold, etc… and the only mounts I’ve ever had fail are two Spuhr mounts. One picatinny rail clamp bar cracked right through a screw hole and one upper ring cracked adjacent to an outer screw through the thin outer web. Spuhr did replace the parts quickly for no charge, but IMO they should not have failed there to begin with. Hakan did an extremely nice job designing and machining these things but honestly I think he got a little *too* happy on the cosmetics and weight reduction side of things during the design phase and didn’t leave enough material in a few critical areas. If you look at the newer “Gen 2” versions of the Spuhr mounts more material has been added to the upper rings around the outermost screw holes for additional web thickness which is where the “Gen 1” ring caps occasionally crack. Unfortunately to make this change the screw pattern for the upper rings changed slightly and the stronger Gen 2 upper rings won’t fit a Gen 1 base.

Only one upper ring on the 10 “Gen 1” mounts that I own has cracked so it doesn’t appear to be a huge problem that affects every unit out there– but I’ve seen it happen to a few others over the years both locally and on a few forums. In my case I know that it’s not a result of overtorquing, I do all my scope mounting installs using a Mountz torque driver that is calibrated several times a year on the expensive torque testing station that sits in the calibration lab here at work. Everything was torqued to Spuhr’s specs. It simply boils down to a material & design issue in a couple of high stress areas– and the upper rings were at least improved with the “Gen 2” models.

Won’t stop me from buying more, I do need one more when that rifle comes back from the gunsmith, and Sphur is still my go-to vendor for one piece mounts.
