Your stuck with a velocity under the speed of sound, amd usually under 1000FPS at that.
As a result you need either a projectile that is wide and heavy, ie 44, 45 or 50 or a proectile that cuts vessels, ie a broadhead.
But to compare a broadhead hunting arrow to a 30 caliber projectile is comparing apples/308’s to oranges/broadheads, and in this case the orange/broadhead kills like it is laced with stryctnine. Whereas that 308 will lack the killing power of even the 38 special lrn and we all know what a fiasco that was in law enforcement, target size and energy is basically the same.
Hoping to find a drugged deer standing broadside in geneneral hunting season at 25 yards is also a pipe dream.

Sounds like great long range fox/raccoon/nutria ballistics to me. That’s what I would use it for. I’d wouldn’t shoot a deer with it, especially in the thick rain forest/mountains I hunt. You would surely loose some deer shooting them with that set-up.
Gotta put blood on the ground to find the runners without tracking them all day, and there will be plenty of runners with good heart/lung shots. A .308 air rifle sucks at putting blood on the ground, and the animals run farther/live longer than they do when shot with a .45.
Shaggy,
And how wide are the cutting blades on that 32 HR dupicate your using?
Will it keep cutting like a broadhead when the animal runs?
Go ask your State Game Department what they think of this 115 grn 308 at 900 fps elephant gun.

I use a 2219 arrow and a 125 grain broad head, and shoot it 190 FPS and it don’t have humongus foot pounds, and it geos through a Deer like a hot knife through Butter. IMHO if that can happen with a Bow, and it does then the 308 will knock it’s socks off with the 130 grain hollow point.
But if you shoot a Deer with a 105 howitzer and hit it in the leg, you still have to track it.
The real evidence is in the Shot.
I have a grain scale and a weight scale and a chrono, and even one that fits on my Bow. The arrow has at times bounced off of my target at 40 yards,so why would anyone take a 40 yard shoot at a deer with a Bow, #1 too far #2 wound and track and maybe you’ll get it and maybe you won’t
. The county I used to live in will only let you Bow Hunt, no Rifle season at all accept Squirrels and rabbits and raccoons, and the Gun has to be in a case and when you tree the raccoon you take the gun out of the case and shoot it and put the gun back in the case. Thats the rules in that county.
Most hunters use CB caps at 710 to 720 FPS, not much fire power about 46 foot pounds, My condor on CO’2 will beet that.
But thats the rules. I agree with you on every aspect of your post, but I have killed Hogs with the same 22 short many times, but I wouldn’t let e Kid try it.
One time a guy raised a hog that took a 22 magnum to put it down between the eyes, it was a big hog and had a hard head.
Its best to get in the woods early, know the woods you are hunting in, the direction of Air and have everything ready when the target comes in. Too late to try to sneak it up to the shoulder when it sneaks upon you :lol
I don’t use a Pellet Rifle at all over the distance of between 25 and 45 yards, I done showed what 40 yards will do, and I’ll eat my hat if that shot(either one of them) won’t put a deer down taking the dot in the midle as the kill zone, pull the triger and the hits shown in the Photo means dead deer. We have lots of deer around heren and a 45 yard shot isn’t hard to get, lots of guys including myself has killed deer with our Bows.
I don’t take Photos because I don’t hang trophys on my wall, Just meat in the freezer lol.
Air rifles and hunting bows….very very similar…yes you CAN kill a deer with a 35 pound pull recurve, yes you can….!!! Yes you can kill a deer with a .22….But why put yourself and the animal at the minimum threshold. We need to be humane hunters. Hit the shoulder on a big buck with that little 35 pounder and you are in big trouble…you had better have a tracking dog. The big huge problem with newer hunters listening to old more experienced hunters is just that….”Ive killed many deer with a .22″ Newer hunters shouldn’t ever hear that, for they usually can’t duplicate it!!! Nothing pisses me off more than to walk up to some young kid trying to track his poorly hit deer with his stupid fully dressed out compound bow with sinfully light arrows and NO clue to what hes doing…he says…” I think i hit him, put to 40 yard pin on him, and pulled the release, it seemed to work at the range…” Same thing with lighter rifles, why put yourself in that corner….there are alot of hunters out there, but unfortuniately very very few good trackers…..I wish more people would listen to roachcreek on this one…
1 1/4″ at 40 yards should be tighter to me. Nothing to do with you are your shooting. I’m just trying to see just how accurate this gun is.
The 115 are the best but today just isn’t my day, the 130 grain hollow points are good but I ran out of them, Adventures in airguns sell them, they shot an excellent group at 25 yards I think I put a coin beside them to show the 3 shot group.
The gun shoots over 200 Fpd’s of energy according to my calculator, the third shot is lower but the first 2 are pretty hard hitting pellets. I also have the 75 grain as mentioned above and they are real fast 1010, 1031 and 1020, Ive looked at every gun I can find in Air and I see some pretty hard hitting guns, but this thing seems to be with the best of them, and the best thing about this gun is you can carry it all day. I’m liking it more every day, I’m fixing to order me the Air Hog tank and fill it to the max and then i can go to the range and really see whats what with a 100 yard shot. Thats going to be my day there,. 😀
Goto page one of this thread and look at the Photo bucket picture I have there using the 130 grain Hollopoints, it shows 2 holes but there are 3 pellets in those 2 holes, and there is a quarter beside of the holes.
What’s the most accurate slugs you’ve tested so far SHAGGY?

Here is a picture of the Corsair at 40 yards using 115 grain Pelets flat nose and taking My nerves into affect , im hitting at about a 1 and 1/4 inch three shot group and the pressure was at 3600 and last shot droped the pressure to 2800.
It went plum through the board and through some back stops I had with rags and stoped at the metal part of the back stop.

Forgot to tell you the numbers was upside down when I was shooting 😮
I just got in my 76 Gn. flat nose pellets today, and wanted to give a reading on the rifle.
3 shots per fill, at 3400 PSI, gives this 1010 Fps 1031 Fps and 1020 Fps.
It varies in that range every time, the next is in the mid 900’ds and the 5’th is from the high 800’ds to the low 800’ds.
IMHO this gun is a keeper. I’ll be back when I get my Marauder 22 pistol. 😛
shooting befor mods to gun 125 grn speer rnd nose was moving at 695 fps i hit the deer in the chest bone facing me the bullet ended up in its lrg intestine basically traveled 2.5ft into its body
i havent killed any sense ive modded the gun but now im shooting 128 grn at 844fps im sure its gonna be brutal
and yes im gonna keep killing deer with it i like killing deer with it over my 50cal black powder
Over 200 Foot pound at that rate.
At about 25 yards it will spin a deer around.
Mine is around that speed in 308, same weight pellet. Right now I’m using the 115 grains but I have a few 130 grains left.
Ive been into air guns a long time, but until they perfected these PCP guns I just had them for a squirrel in the yard but today they will make a good survival weapon.
My Air Force 25 caliber is an outstanding gun. I use the Laser at 15 yards and 25 and beyond I use the Scope,. Makes a good combination cause the scope is too high off of the barrel.
The Lower the scope the flatter the shot.
These things sorta keep me young and curious. I have a lot of guns, and one 22 ruger I made using the receiver I put the barrel on it and it took me all day painstakingly with a dremel tool reaming out the stock to fit the barrel.
The time was wort it, federal Bulk from walmarts shoots hole for hole at 25 yards, and on a hundred yards on a calm day I can hit a clay pigeon every time, have to hold a little over, I know the place on the bottom cross hair to put it and the shot hits its mark. Never tested to see how close the bullets was together, was just glad to see the Pigeon explode 😀
all i can sat is that i have killed deer with my career 201s 9mm i have shot them at different distances the best shot was on a doe standing at 45 yds away she was facing me so i took the shot but maby this will tell u what kind of power these things produce

I been reading the post in and out, working around the house today.
I went back 45yards and hit about 1/2″ high so the 65 should max out the peak high on the gun.
My scope is also setting close to the gun, the front is barely off of the Blue.
Just wanted to touch base and give the information.
25 is still in the center on the shoot and see target. So take my nerves into consideration I could pull one way or the other, but I’m shooting off of a bench, so It is maybe a matter of preference.
As I said earlier, I don’t shoot at Game with an Air rifle any further than 45 yards, If I’m going further I use my High Powered rifle.
All my guns are shooting good and out of the box, if I had to send them somewhere else I’d not buy one.
Only thing I’ve ever done to a pellet rifle was order a 25 caliber barrel and shroud from Tony,”I don’t use the shroud”, but maybe I might need it someday if I take it to my son’s house who is closer to the neighbors.
I have an archery target that I shot plum through it is a wallmart stuffed target that has the deer quarter on the front and a bunch of X’s on the Back, I shot at it towards the long end”wide side” and shot plum through it just now at 45 yards, never done that with an arrow. not even the tip ever came out on the long side.
OK that’s about it. Just for you peoples information I thought you’d find it interesting.
Not trying to promote the gun, I have left reviews on the Condor and the Marauders and the discovery, so it’s all in fun and for you all to look at.
See ya when something else happens I have one more gun in mind it is the 22 Marauder 22 Pistol, Pyramyd Air is supposed to tell me when they get it in and I’ll order it , and that will make my entire collection complete. Happy shooting and have a good day.
A few good points…. first, yes… take the ‘reviews’ on PA with a grain of salt. Hell, one just has to look at comments on You Tube about big bore airguns to realize that most folks dont know shit about them.
I have a few big bores… each serves a purpose.
I have a Haley .32 that I have tuned down to give me around 15 shots in the 65-70fpe range. This is perfect medicine for small game within range.
I have a DAQ 308 that I have tuned down to around 140fpe for a good dozen shots. Why? Stock, it gets around 200fpe, but only for 3 or 4 shots until velocity drops significantly. I can do without the extra fpe for good shots. I’d use it on coyote within range, but to be honest, I dont get that close to coyotes here, not even with a stock 308 airgun, so until either I become a better hunter, or the coyotes dumb down, I’ll stick with small game for my 308.
I have a DAQ 50 that has been modded. I get 3 good shots out of it in the 300fpe range. After that, it drops like a brick. I’ve shot two deer with it so far. One dropped in it’s tracks and the other ran about 20 yards.
I also have a 909s in .45 that produces around 185fpe… a bit low by others numbers I’ve seen. I’ll either modify it myself or have someone look at it as right now, I dont know that I’d use it for deer sized game…but I’ll admit it is as, if not more, accurate than my DAQ and certainly isnt as fussy about ammunition.
The bottom line in finding enough gun for your needs is to recognize your abilities as a hunter as well as a shooter. Sure, I can stack lead with my 308… but I cant call a coyote in close enough for me to stack lead on him….. so I stick with my .223 for them.
I dont think anyone is being unreasonable in saying that the 308 just isnt the best tool for the job on deer sized game. There are readily available options elsewhere. Jack Haley makes some nice guns, as well as the Korean guns….. Hell, I think even the 9mm Korean guns put out good fpe, though I have no first hand experience with them.
RJ Porter gets some very good groups and killing power on deer with his Korean gun, and has bridged the gap from shooting equipment to Fishing tackle with it 😉 .
I agree with you on the 50 dragon slayer, it seems just too slow for me also, but I have been leaning towards the 45 Korean guns and I am waiting to see what the velocity results are on Subssonnics Big Bob tuned gun once he quits mutilating himself on power tools.
I have been a bullet caster most of my life, when my 101 gave up the ghost as a kid of 11, I tried casting lead slugs for my Crosman 150 with the salvaged barrel, didn’t work, but I was hooked. I have had as many as 30 plus bullet molds at one time. These big bore air rifles will probably get me doing it again.

You would be hard-pressed to find a more accurate bigbore airgun than the Koreans make. Might have something to do with the maximum fps variances for a shot string being about 20fps or less, whereas many other bigbores will loose 50fps every shot, producing shot string fps variances of 100+fps in only 3-4 shots.
Yes the DS has the lowest power of the Korean bigbores, but it can be tuned to 250+fpe with a 4-shot string that has a very low fps variance. The DS is known to be extremely accurate. The 909/909S rifles can be tuned to 280-340+fpe.
Yes the tunes add to the expense. But look at what you are getting for the money? A whole lot IMO. I can shoot 4-5 shot groups using the same POA without having to refill my rifle, and each shot has the power (around 270-280fpe) to kill a deer. Much better chance of a bloodtrail with the .45, I might add. I feel the .308 is a poor choice for animals much larger than a coyote. A game processor that processed the ram I shot with a 250grainer out of my 909 said it looked like it had been shot with a 30-06 judging from the holes left in the ribcage.
Realize that many of those reviews on PyramidAir are written by first-time PCP/bigbore airgun buyers that have yet to hunt with them.

The FPE/FPS myth/hype….This subject goes on and on in the various threads on air rifles and bows…They are ONE tool in helping an experienced hunter chose his arsenal. ANd they hype and sell more guns…just like bows reaching for higher and higher fps….How can a .308 with 400fpe have LESS RECOVERY power than a .45 with 200??? Notice its is animal recovery and not overall power. Take that smaller bore .308 and land what would seem like a sweet shot thru a vital…400fpe sends that slender round clear thru that animal, seems like a score!!!!!, and just like humans some deer are whimpy and some are real tough, so this just happens to be a rugged buck, he takes you over hills and dales, sure he is gonna expire, but not without a huge ordeal of tracking. The .45 with its pathetic 200fpe penetrates only 3/4 and stops. Pass thru or not who recovers their animal??? Not the archery channel here. The .308 with its blinding fpe makes the pass thru but leaves little fpe IN the animal and expires the remainder beyond. The .45 leaves ALL of its fpe within. Both shots with both rifles killed the deer in this senario, but one was recovered with a few yards and the other after a very long and stressful track… With our bows we want to leave as little fpe within the animal as possible, All of it expiring after pass thru. Unless your after smaller game, with blunts, then the same applies as with air rifles. The perfect shot passes clear thru with the deer hardly noticing. Compound bows with all their gadgets to buy and incredible fps to hype sounds like what GAMO is doing in air rifles…selling hype. Yup guys at the range can shoot those needle arrows with their pins and release aids out past 50 yards and pull groups that makes my jaw drop…but buy the time a silly shot that that gets to the deer with those lightweight arrows it has not power left to crash thru a slight miss of a shoulder shot…Yes people have caught tarpon on 4 pound test…even killed a moose with a BB gun…scaled Everest in a bathing suit…but its not for the average. YOU!!!! might be an above average hunter/tracker and CAN pull off getting buy with the minimum…but most cant…and when we tell the stories of killing the grizzly with a 75 yard shot we just don’t know who is listening/reading…and more than likely they can’t pull off what you did…Hunt with most of the odds in your favor…Its not at all about killing its ALL about recovery!!!! Good luck the season is right around the corner…
