Q:

Time to test new Pellets !!

I got a Tin (or actually a Plastic Box) of Hurricane .25 cal. 30 ge pellets to try out. Really good looking Pills made to Hurricane Air Arms specifications and they resemble Daysate Rangemaster. I want to go Pellet testing right now but it´s dark, cold , humid and very windy. Maybe tomorrow.

I´ll , however , send a Tin of these to Whineyman so he can measure and test them since he´s much more qualified than i am. My approach is far less scientific : Shoot them and measure them Groups. The old way from those days before the Berlin Wall came down .. 😯

I actually inspected every single one of those 275 Pellets that came in the Box and there is zero percent distorted skirts. The skirts are kinda thick and these Pills are actually called ” split skirt” , whatever that means.
Here´s the actual Info once again :
What’s new about the Hurricane 18 grain lead Exterminator air bullet?
1. It is made on a single die system and the wire feed is controlled by a laser micrometer, so every one is identical with minimal weight variation from batch to batch.
2. The unique patented split skirt allows it to adapt to the various types of rifling providing better accuracy and increases muzzle velocity because of lower friction through the barrel.
3. Its bullet shape has a superior ballistic coefficient which provides greater downrange energy.
4. The presentation of the Exterminator in its robust packaging ensures that you will not be throwing away distorted pellets because of cheap inferior packaging which should be a major consideration when assessing the cost per pellet at face value.
5. The formula used for the premium lead alloy reduces the need for frequent cleaning of the barrel.

These are found in .22 & .25 cal. In .22 there are three different weights to choose from ; 18gr, 25gr and 37.5gr . I need to get the Doc to test those .22´s in his Cricket and EdGun.

Windywing – What is , in your humble opinion , the “good” velocity for those Benjamin Dome .25 pellets ?? I know, i know – it´s all about the barrel in question , but are they generally best at low (260-270 mps), medium (270-280) or high (280 and on) speeds ?
I´m just curious over your findings . 😳

Thanks Phil,,,

that is true, reg will take the air space inside the air reservoir ,,,, you know better about your guns … nice info..

very nice info,,, thanks,,, but it is really strange that after all of these custom hand made modifies that you have done on your BPs,,, but still your B-Rod is not regulated,,, since there are a tons of reg that especially made for Marauder ….
if i don’t had my M-Rod in my selling list ,,, i would definitely buy one of these or at least an HDD or O-Ring Mods ….. you will get more consistence shots with either one of these thanks ….

Regs work well when you have the airspace brother Hemn but this .25 pup is highly tuned to run a very flat 13 shot high velocity string.. If I was to put a reg in its already small air cylinder I would get even less shots at only a slightly better velocity spread. I have tuned it this way for a purpose so fitting a reg would not suit my needs.
If I was to fit a reg for example I could shoot maybe 20 shots at 840fps but if I tuned it to 920 where it is currently set id get about 8-9 shots because of less air space in the Cylinder due to the new reg and plenum mass.
HDDs in a Marauder is a waist of time and only an average fix for a problem that shouldn’t be there anyway. if you fit a heavier hammer and valve return spring the hammer bounce is almost non existent. They are better suited to a factory tuned .22 or .177 Marauder not a hot Rod .25cal.
Don’t believe everything you read on the net.. most is just advertising ploys.

Thanks Wing! Very comprehensive info. It all turned out exactly as you thought it would from the beginning : the speed is King. I’ll have an opportunity to test them at 50m with the ” Cucaracha ” and i’ll see if the current tune 130b, 3/4 valve spring tension will allow velocities over 950 fps. I don’t want to consistently shoot my gun much over 930 fps though so if the Dildo’s don’t work on that speed range then they do not work for me, with this barrel.

All good Ville, Your .25 bug has the very same barrel, twist rate and length as the L/W I fitted to my B-Rod so you can expect very similar results Id imagine..
Now go and be a “brass monkey” out there..

The M-Rod is not regulated and is quite the air hog so I left it tethered to a buddy bottle with 180Bar in it for shot consistency.

here is some of them and you might have better abilities to find out best one….

Thanks Ville..it sure is.. We are a part of the Commonwealth after all :confusedn:

… Back to the .25cal Exterminators..
The .25 cals didnt quite have the consistency of head size as the .22cal pellets did, the head sizes ranged from 6.31 to 6.37 and weighed in at 29.7gr to 30.2gr.
Here is the .25 cal pellet along side a 25.4gr JSB King and its bigger brother the 36gr Daystate Rangemaster.. the length between contact points is a lot greater than the JSB kings so a faster twist and high velocity is defiantly required.

The test rifle for this pellet was my custom .25 Marauder Bullpup hereafter referred to as the M-Rod.
The barrel is a 16″ BSA with a fast 1-16″ twist and at 50 yards it will stack many brands of pellets.

The M-Rod is not regulated and is quite the air hog so I left it tethered to a buddy bottle with 180Bar in it for shot consistency.
Even though this BSA has a fast twist these pellets still respond best to high velocity.. the barrel is short so the velocity was maxed out on the third group.
I was getting tired of walking my range and changing the paper target so excuse the shared target on this one.. I see it as my contribution to saving the rainforests

Still not satisfied with the grouping of this pellet in this PCP ( it will stack kings in a single hole at this range) I wanted to test it at an even higher velocity..
this poses a problem with the shorter barrel and airflow limited by pressure/hammer spring tension..
This is how I over come such a problem..

I have a L/W Match 1-17.5 twist in .25cal that I tried on my Steyr for a while but it really didnt have enough puff to make the most of that cal.
I have re machined the breach end to fit the M -Rod just for this test! The length of this tube ended up at 23.5″.
By filling my buddy bottle up to 230bar and tethering it I have lifted the pressure at the valve considerably, unfortunately there is not enough power in the hammer spring to knock open the poppet valve for any length of time to raise the velocity much more than 800fps..

soooooo.. one must fit a very heavy hammer spring 😉

Now this made the B-rod Extremely hard to cock and the muzzle blast was just nasty.. I added the rear section of my BSA shroud (minus the front baffles) and fitted my custom carbon fibre suppressor on the 3 muzzle threads that were still exposed out the end of the shroud 😆 completely cosmetic value only the rear shroud is not vented into the front muzzle can suppressor at all.. this is a completely temporary set up as I intend to fit this L/W .25 barrel to one of my P12 bullpups at a later date.

The suppressor however made shooting it bearable without ear plugs..
The outcome of this temporary mod was this:!!! :8:

This is the best of 3 groups that were all 1/2″ and under..
Now that is five 1/4″ pellets stacked in a group just under a 1/2″ delivering a respectable 68.65ftlbs of muzzle energy… :8:

Once again the conclusion on these pellets is the more velocity you can achieve the better your group will be.. unfortunately I would never run my B-Rod at those velocities for any more than a few groups as it is just horrible to operate the bolt with that heavy spring fitted and it would be a 3 shot gun if it was shot un-tethered.. no thanks.. 😯
Give them a blast through your wound up crickets though guys and maybe even a hot AF will get them to perform?..

When time alows Ill hit the 100 Yard range and post the results 😎

Yep – congratulations are in order! A Wingman II . Good plan for life too !The NZ schooling system sounds very “Europeish” and i thought that kind only existed on these Shores.

Not trying to shit in your cereal but 30 yards/meters doesn’t mean anything but the group size at that distance.

Some of the bad tins of JSB/AA 177 pellets stack at 30 yards (zero to less than 0.125″ ctc) but then spread out to 1.5″ or larger groups at 45-50 yards indoors… :2cents:

And you think i didn’t know that? Read it again and rejudge.

I’ll tell you when i manage to squeeze it out.

Wow Congratulations. :8: :8: Your life is about to change. It’s a lifetime sentence. Better enjoy this airgun time. :biggrinn:

You need to get crackin’ ’cause that baby wont wait. I guarantee it – twice. It just happens and there ain’t no stoppin’ it. 🙂 Can you spell COLLEGE FUND? No more frivolous airgun purchases. My last one is, thank God, on a full merit scholarship for her last two years in college. Did I thank God? Kiss that bank account goodbye. Whew. :darth-vader: 🙂

Thanks Coda.. We are both looking forward to the change due in 6 months.. My wife and I have been together 11 years and married 9 years, We have worked hard to get ahead and have never had debt to our name. We are now free hold on a beautiful piece of land with a new house, our business is for sale and we have plenty of savings in the bank. (which means more toys not less)
We both intend on semi retiring and enjoying being parents together the way we have always wanted. Having kids just to throw in day care so we could go on slaving at work just never made sense to us. 😕 :2:
Yes we have worked hard but now it all feels worth it and we look forward very much to kicking back and enjoying life with our new addition.. :fishinghole:

We have a very good education system here in NZ that entitles all kids to government paid student loans for college/university which have no interest and you dont have to pay them back till you begin working in the trade you studied for… The is also student allowances (they dont have to pay back…for living costs etc) and scholarships all of which means parents dont have to pay the kids way through schooling if they dont wish to. We are all brought up to find our own way in this world and giving your kids a handout is not a good way to encourage the “go get em” attitude.. :butkick:
NZ is a nation of free thinkers and inventors and always has been.. we are a nation of people that get off our asses if we really want something.

Wow Congratulations. :8: :8: Your life is about to change. It’s a lifetime sentence. Better enjoy this airgun time. :biggrinn:

The barrel is a brand new 22″ L/W Match with a 1-17.” twist.. they shot ok.. you should see what it can do with 18.1gr EDgun pellets @ 900fps!

quote Wingman NZ:

My Black beauty has no issues with pushing a 18.1gr JSB to 930fps max with a extreme spread of 6fps over 25 shots. Its normally tuned to 900fps with the 18gr JSBs.
To say this rifle likes these pellets would be and understatement..

That thing LOVES those pellets at the higher velocity!!!

What barrel is in the AA? 😯 😯 😯

Stop wasting valuable test time by the Keybord! You have that pesky P12 to test too. Log out and go to work !! :fishinghole:
If i read you between the lines these could be bona fide hunting pellets upto 75 meters and good for those windier days at the range upto at least 50m when the speed is set right and / or the twist rate is there ?
Thanks for the Avatar BTW … 😎

I told you my people would hack your account and change your avatar didnt I?

To be fair it was 1am when I finished this review.. theres just not enough time left in the day while I run two business and spend any spare time packing to move into my new house..
To add to that Im going to be a Dad! :8: My lovely wife is pregnant with our first and I have some how been lumped with all the cooking and her daily chores that she has just been to queezy to attempt..
My hobby has been suffering some what to say the least..
Ill continue to burn the candle at both ends until the P12 review is finished.. Hoping to have it done by mon-tues next week.
I will post the .25cal part of this review when I get home from work..
