While you’re waiting for your Matadors……..
I thought I would share with you how I coped waiting for my Matadors. It’s a loooong story with a lot to learn. I started this thread back in June 2011 while still waiting, – and oddly enough it became one of the most viewed threads on this forum.
This is how it started:
As it happens, I am the lucky owner of a serious harem of nice guns. And I frequently visit my summerplace on the coast down south in Norway, where weather is the only restriction to my shooting….
Summernights are nice and light with sunset around 22hrs….:

So yesterday I quit Oslo for a few weeks. Fed up with my loooongish waiting for ED and friends to deliver I took 11 members of my harem with me.
Here they are:

As some of you may know, I test and review guns for our Norwegian forum, and this time a comparison of springers is on the agenda….
So go ahead and name them, from left to right…….
And yes. There will be a more in depth test of Lelya 090 who has got new glasses for the occasion…….. 😉
Life is too short to sit put and wait……… 😀

Yes ED, – that’s why I don’t want to adjust any further right now. I’ll leave the gun to settle down and for springs and O-rings to find their most “comfortable” positions…. 😉
Then we’ll see………. 😀
And for those who really don’t have a full understanding of what a regulator does: Compare it wih the door-man at a nightclub. He is not supposed to let anybody into the club (chamber) beyond the limit set forth by the authorities. (In our case 130) And that regardless of the queue (reservoir pressure) outside. ………
My blue string may indicate that my “doorman” may have let a few of his friends into to the club before opening hours (first shot). But then, – he is new on the job, – let him get the chance to correct himself. If not…. 😉
Cheers 😀
As for the first shot — again, let the gun to run in for about 1 500 shot, then clean it and then shoot again, you will be surprised.
Ed
Ok Dekan, – got it !! 😀
I thought you were waiting for another one……… 😉
Rust: I have wiped off a little, but its just surface rust on the pins so a little oil has been applied……. 😉
What worries me more is actually my regulator… 🙄
If you look at the blue string in the above graphs, – it starts off with a sharp fall from the first shot and then keeps a downward trend….
This could be an indication that the reg is not capable of “holding the door” locked into the main reservoir in spite of “instructions” to keep anything above 130 bars out of the chamber….
I just retested (have not shot since yesterday), – and same thing happened again. Big difference between first and second shot, – then “flattish”…..
Hmmmmmmmm……….
Cheers
Trygve 😀
Zoco, I got my rifle 6 months ago 😆
after just 3 weeks of waiting.hihihi
I was just in another town without my Matador.
Now I am fine.
Enjoing right now, sun is shinning same as my Matador.heheh
As I see, you still didnt removed rust on your screws. 😥
btw, nice report Zoco. keep us posted. 😉
Hi Kazzz:
As I see it now I agree, – but I am experimenting a little. I wanted to test my gun up against ED’s recommendations. I am testing another chronograph today (my 4th) to see what that may read. It is very frustrating that my 3 chronographs all read differently and that from the very same shot……
The first part of the green string is very flat indeed and yes. – for competition purposes I would refill as you do. In fact I would find the part where the string is at its best and use that only.
I’ll leave the gun to settle now before fineadjustments. The potential is however obvious…..
How are you doing with your triggeradjustments ???
Thanks….. 😀
Zoco…
If it was my gun, I would be more happy with the green line. That’s the most flat regulated line of them all.. Why botter the shots after the reg?
Mine does something exact when comming of the reg on 130 bar (shot +-45 .22 R2.5 short) and I refill always at this point.
The blue line start +-20 fps higher at shot 1 then shot 50, so POI is shifting.. Take those other non regulated shots and it goes UP again 20fps.
My curve was a curve of max spread over 40 shots of 5 fps… That’s a flat line and I don’t care what happens after the 130 bar, the goal is to achieve a flat line, no? Just fill after 130 bars?
Thanks!
Ed,
The main reason I am attracted to your guns is because they are COMPACT without any compromise on ACCURACY. There are a few other guns on the market today that are just as accurate as the EDguns (and some are even more accurate) but they are much too LONG. At least for my purposes 😉 I think the original idea of the EDguns as ‘out of a car window’ bullpups was a winning one and you should stick to it. I didn’t like at all the idea of the Morana because it ‘cheated’ on that same original idea.
In short, my suggestion to you is to concentrate on an equally accurate .25 caliber SHORTER version fitted with about 21 inch (approx. 53 cm) barrel and a matching air tube. You told me that there will be some Standard length .25 cal. R3 guns produced this time and I was very happy to hear it. But I will be even happier if you can combine this shorter .25 version with the newly developed valve and trigger systems. I know how painful it is to wait for EDguns but I am willing to ‘sacrifice’ a few dull winter months in order to have an equally, and may be even more accurate and more air efficient .25 Standard with a better trigger system.
Thanks!
Nik 🙂
You asked for it…….. 😉
I have adjusted the hammerspring again. Just tightened the spring a little bit more……..
For those who don’t know how, – its done by rotatinng the threaded “silver cylinder” in the image below (you’ve seen it before). BTW the screw at the very bottom is a locking screw for that cylinder:

This is where I am now (blue line):

The string is flattening, – and I’m just above 900 fps on my chronograph which is reading a bit on the low side.
This graph may actually serve as a pretty good illustration for those who don’t really understand the difference bewteen a regualted and unregulated gun, – so I have thrown in (pink) a shotstring from one of my unregulated guns for comparison. This string is typical for a gun without a reg.
For my Matador strings I have put an arrow roughly where the gun comes off the regulator for all the three strings.
My first Matador string (the red one) shows that the hammerspring tension was set too low for an optimal use of the air available. I got a lot of shots managed by the regulator, – but nearly half the string was off the reg. The second half of the string pattern is exactly the same as that of an unregulated gun. After the gun comes off the reg (in this case 130 bar), – there is only the hammer, the valve and the pressure in the reservoir to control the shot. In my case the tension was so low that the hammer was not able to open the valve properly and the string “peaked” at some 900 fps.
First adjustment resulted in the green string. More air is being used for each shot managed by the reg. The price paid is fewer shots before the reg “goes off duty”. The string as a whole is a lot flatter than the red one though, but theres is still a part of the string that remains unregulated but the difference in speed between regged and unregged shots is not that big, but still significant.
The last adjustment (blue string) is quite close to perfection. The aim is to have this string completely flat. I am nearly there. I am getting some 73 shots with an extreme spread of some 20 fps. The range is beetween some 920 fps and 900 (on my low reading chronograph).
ED said the R3 .22 has been optimized for speeds in the 920-950 fps range. It seems he is dead on target…… 😉
I’ll probably leave the gun for a while with this setting. This in order to observe if changes will occur, – even without my tampering. The gun needs to settle in, – and I’ll leave it to it…….. 😀
Sorry for my longish post, – but I thought is useful as a “demonstration” for those who are less familiar with “the science”…….
Like myself…… 😳
That is what I am alway trying to do. It is very simple to me, I try to improve something and don’t rise the price, finding the inside reserves for that, then, when the amount of the extra expenses rise above the limit I can afford — I rise the price. But I never do any improvements just to decrease the cost of the gun production. I prefer to sell less guns but be sure they are perfect or, at least I consider them perfect 🙂 You should know just one thing I am trying to make them as best as I can now and here.
Ed
Whatever you decide to do ED, – don’t compromise on quality !!! 😀
Can’t you get us a semi-auto kit before all these new improvements?
Hoot
Well, don’t consider that as a complain but I have not a waiting line for next 4-5 months, and it grows up faster then I can increase the number of the guns I make. I had to stop making Lelya and Veles just to try to keep the production facility only for Matadors and I see now that we fail to meet all the demands. It is not a complain, I am very glad and I think I just have to rise the price to meet the demand and the offer 🙂 So, I just have no phisical possibilities to make anything else 🙁

Them groups look pretty sweet to me!!! It’s tough to say with the only point of reference being the pellet hole though. But for 50 yards it’s a damn good start.
I’m liking the response your rifles are having to your tunes and tweaks.
Looking forward to more tests and trials as things progress!!!
Ed
Thanks !
I’ll be there in another few days if I continue like this…. 😉
Did you get the money for the Veles ??? 😀

I’d be happy with the Standard length in .25 caliber, with the beefed up valve and new trigger group. Any chance of Tony starting a waiting list for the R3.5 Standard in caliber .25 for next Summer delivery?
