While you’re waiting for your Matadors……..
I thought I would share with you how I coped waiting for my Matadors. It’s a loooong story with a lot to learn. I started this thread back in June 2011 while still waiting, – and oddly enough it became one of the most viewed threads on this forum.
This is how it started:
As it happens, I am the lucky owner of a serious harem of nice guns. And I frequently visit my summerplace on the coast down south in Norway, where weather is the only restriction to my shooting….
Summernights are nice and light with sunset around 22hrs….:
So yesterday I quit Oslo for a few weeks. Fed up with my loooongish waiting for ED and friends to deliver I took 11 members of my harem with me.
Here they are:
As some of you may know, I test and review guns for our Norwegian forum, and this time a comparison of springers is on the agenda….
So go ahead and name them, from left to right…….
And yes. There will be a more in depth test of Lelya 090 who has got new glasses for the occasion…….. 😉

We all shoot 100m (110 yards) with the same gun, 10 shots..
Smallest group wins and becomes the first official private tester of the new EDgun.. 🙂

We are working on improvements of the valve group and achieved some goods results. The shot became even shorter then before, and a little more quite, probably we will put those valve group to the serial guns towards the summer, as well we changed the recoil but, not the gun is more comfortable to keep. In the spring time we will change the trigger system, expect it will be better to shoot. Working now at the electronic trigger as well, I think that will be perfect for competition and accuracy shooting. We are working and I try to follow all of discussions to find the tboubls and fine the solution 🙂

Just an update from my side here…
Because I have Joosts’ gun now I need to train myself again and tweak the gun for my needs.
This means I must learn to handle an edgun AGAIN.
It’s not shooting like another gun. Personally I find an edgun for more difficult to shoot then any other rifle within the same price range.
The hold sensitiveness of and Edgun is for more greater then any other, it does not forgive you once when you hold, pressure, .. it different then the time before.
Now I also realize that one thing that has a great influence is the trigger pull and how you hold it. Do you squeeze the trigger and you whole hand, so supporting the gun NOT to move backwards when fired, or do you squeeze only the finger and this allowing the gun to move backwards? It give me more then halve a mil dot poi at 110 yards!
I’m playing also with the trigger. No first stage, direct crisp 2nd stage. But I shot better groups with a tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiny harder 2nd stage then a lighter, cristalcrisp 2nd stage. Strange but I think when it is too light, you don’t (or are not forced to) pull always with the same speed/weight.
Also the follow up is of great importance.
How you support the gun with your other hand on the back must always be the same to (gun must move after the shot always the same!!)
My conclusion is that an Edgun is really a remarkable piece of airgun and that it is capable of doing very nice and tight groups at 110 yards.
BUT it is very difficult to achieve this and I do have sometimes unexplainable flyers (also with weighted pellets and inspected) that are not due to me.. So there is still room for improvement.
Yes, the groups do show some potential in the gun. But as you see there’s already a minor spread. A ctc of some 5-6 mm is ok at 50 mts, – but will dramatically grow when pulling the target out to 110 yds. Maybe I didn’t “bench” the gun well enough…….. 😳
No, I cannot blame those groups on my own shooting abilities. I just sighted and pulled the trigger. The gun was not in any way supported by my body bar my left hand on top of the scope which btw may have done more bad than good……..

Too early to tell but it certainly is a very interesting piece of equipment where ED’s engineering skills are shining through all the way…. 😀
The few probs I have had (apart from getting the gun here) are just details that should be easily fixed………

I noticed that you didn’t actually state that you shot them, did you fly Nik in, did your girl friend shoot them or are you going to claim them? 😯
Did you try adjusting the front trigger screw? I have found that adjusting it, along with the spring tension on the trigger rod, makes the trigger light and very good. I don’t have the air gun selection that you do; I only have a 22 cal FX Royalle 400 to compare my Edguns to.
I know that you went thru a year of frustration trying to get them (it probably didn’t help any that you don’t stay in one country for over a month or two!) but, were the Edguns worth the wait? :popcorn:
Matador R3 no 2844, – Target no 2 of 5 (shots 26-50 in a complete shotstring from 220 – 80 bars). Five shots groups at 55 yds (50 meters), gun “benched” for the purpose (shot from a shooting rest on a table and not supported by hand):

As for your suggestion, I don’t think I’ll try that quite yet. Simply because I don’t see how it could matter on this particular rifle. It seems the pull stays heavier than I ideally would have wanted to unless I compromise on security and losen up on the nut on the bolt until it almost doesn’t cock…..
But I’m Ok for now…..
I have been adjusting hammerspring, – and this is where I am right now (green curve):
More air is getting through under management of the regulator leaving fewer shots unregulated…..
But then ED came up suggesting 920 fps, – and it seems he may be right. I have more to go on. Anyway, I am usually not shooting JSB 18s at higher speeds than 900 fps, – so tonight I’ll spend some time in the parking area under my building shooting at 55 yds….
(Have to just try it before my GF comes………… 😀 )

am struggling with the second stage pull though. Veeeery difficult to get as light as I want it………

You need a finer threaded adjustment screw, you might want to look at changing that out and re-tap to a finer thread… That will slow the adjustment down for more precise settings… Just a thought, wouldn’t be hard to do either, other than the rifle being brand new and all LOL…Some guys have a hard time with the first couple of modifications LOL Certainly on a rifle of this quality…

Just you guys don’t tell my wife this, specially today!!! Today is our 23 year of being married, no small feet in itself!!! I for the life of me have no idea why she has not kicked me out LOL… She certainly deserves better than this old Rowdy sort of guy LOL…
It happens that why:
1. I assemble the gun and adjust it to the right speed.
2. I shoot the gun to test the accuracy.
3. I check the speed again.
4. I pack it.
Since the gun wasn’t used for few months there are some deformations in the O-rings and plastic in regulator, that is normal that the speed can be different. It is like a car, you should make running in for the first couple of thousand km, to have it working properly. So, one kilometer of running in for the car is about 1 pellet of running in for the gun 🙂
Zoco, don’t you think that putting something in that empty champagne bucket in the lower right corner might brighten up some of your gloomier moments and give you a truer perspective of your relationship with the EDguns ❓

But why do you ship gun set at 850 fps if you should have it at 920-950 ?

Matador standard 5.5 is optimized for JSB heavy pellets flying out with the speed about 280-290 m/sec, that makes 920-950 f/sec. If it is turned down, after the regulator is off (about 130 bar) the string goes up. You can adjust the gun the way when the regulator is off you will still have horizontal string for some more shots. Besides, I always told, when you get the gun, adjust it to the optimal speed, then shoot about 1-1.5 thousand shots, then clean the barrel and adjust the speed again, turning it down to 250 m/sec and then rising little by little up to 280 m/sec. Then enjoy.
