.25 slugs
On the yellow forum in the classified section there is a guy selling .25 slugs 73 grain and 56 grain. my question is how fast do you think that we could push them down the barrel of a Condor. he tested them in a Sumatra carbine. I would post the link but I dont know how. The wife is in France 🙁 and took the brains with her. 😳

I won’t say there is “no chance” but it is very unlikely. The .25s are a pain to cast already and we’re not ready to start another test program.
Any chance in making me some ~50 gr. 22 cal ones?

The longer slug, once spun fast enough to become stable, will be much harder to throw “off axis” and should therefore tend to follow a natural trajectory more accurately. The longer bullets are harder to stabilize initially but once stable tend to fly truer than shorter ones.
Personally, I’m surprised at the ‘watcutter’ type design doing so well at longer ranges but look forward to seeing where this goes. The trend in long range centerfire match ammo has been for years a heavier/longer bullet for any given caliber. If you can make a bullet longer and still stabilize it, it will perform better at longer ranges and retain more energy even if at a slightly reduced muzzle velocity.
Wow, there’s been a lot of action here. Thanks for posting the groups Rob. I’d say the slugs have some potential as they are doing pretty well at 50 yards when shot by a travel weary coffee’d up shooter. 😀
Naturally, I’d like to see all the slugs go through the same hole but I don’t think we’ll ever get that good. The slugs are pretty consistent but we didn’t match grade them. I don’t think Rob was shooting off a regulator so there are gun variables. There is also the variable of perfect loading in a barrel without a chamber cut for slugs and then there is the issue of passing through the choke. These slugs don’t have as great a rearward bias in drag either. On the plus side, there is probably less overall drag the longer the slug and there will be greater retained energy at distance.
I’m not sure why the 8 ring seem to do a bit better than the 6 ring in accuracy. The groups I shot out of my (now chokeless) Sumatra were pretty close but the edge goes to the 8 ring version. I got some nice groups out of that gun with the 7 ring version too but I didn’t post them because that slug will just fit into the magazine but the slightest rubbing would end up causing damage to the magazine rotation and indexing system. I could caution to only single load but someone would fill the magazine and then blame their busted gun on me… Anyhow, the 7 rings seemed to be about on par with the 6 and 8 ring versions. I was all out of 9 ring slugs but I’ll have to test some of those too. I’m thinking that maybe the longer slugs go through the choke with more stability or maybe the rings are such that the difference in drag characteristics helps them track that little bit better.
I’m sure that once Cedric gets out there with his gun rested on a sandbag and goes through some 5, 6, 7 , 8 and 9 ring slugs; he’ll have even more data for us to ponder!
OBTW; Rob, when you get a chance to shoot some groups; try shooting a set of 3 or 5 of the 6 ring slugs backwards as tru wadcutters. I’ve not done that with these yet but I will. I’ve seen some slugs turn from decent to tackdriver by turning them around. Someone has to try it!

No accuracy testing today, just some plinking and penetration.
Tried the 72gr slugs on a 2×4 at 10 feet… I didnt really think it’d go through, but it went through the 2×4 like paper. Tried at 25 yards with the same result. Pulverized the backstop behind it.
Plinking at spinner targets with it a bit and the knockdown is great. No pics, sorry.
People that use MilDot and Ballistic Plex scopes love that program. With a little calculation, they can determine exactly what range the slug will POI on each mil-dot without having to even shoot the slug in the first place.
Showing the amount of rise out to the range the slug is zeroed to really opened my eyes to what is a practical weight for a given power level.
My best guess is the increased bearing surface. I think bearing surface is good for accuracy so long as the slug is stabilized from what gather.
Very nice groups rob. Those sucker do hit with some authority. Make the 42 gr PEJ’s seem like light weights. Cant wait to do some shooting with my condor as i now have the slugs.
I know that it’s only one person’s results so far (but what a person Rob is!) but would anyone like to chime in and guess why the 72g slugs seem to be shooting so much better than the 54s?

Thanks for the info. I’ve not measured my bore to reticle, but I’d imagine it to be around 2 inches.
I have to admit that I’ve never played much with trajectory programs and certainly not with Chairgun much. 😳 I just shoot at various ranges and then go from there. I reckon it would certainly help if I did.
I’m really liking the 72gr slugs. The others are doing ok, but for me, the 72gr are the cats ass. For 90% of what I do with the Condor, Kodiaks are fine, but it’s nice to know that I can get these big boys now when I want some major carnage. I’ll be playing more with the 54gr slugs and they very well might replace Kodiaks for me at some point. Either way, Jerry has a customer in me for a long time. He’s been great with communication and his slugs are top notch. Would rather get my ammo from someone such as that than from the big stores any day.
Reading back again on your message… I didnt realize that those big slugs would retain more energy at 100 yards than a .22 rimfire……. 😯
Hey Rob3dr, how far away from the center of the bore is the center of your scope’s reticle?
Now that the .25 is being taken into the conical zone, leaving the diabolo (sp?) behind, we can use this calculator to pinpoint drop. Just be certain to remember to fillout the box in the left hand corner, put in SWC, and type in the height of the center of your sights (reticle) from the bore.
I have found this calculator to be accurate when doing ballistic test with my .45, and my .25 when I had it. Lot’s of info on remaining FPE dpwnrange, the effect of wind/drift, rise and fall of the slug every however-many yards you want (I put in 5 yard incerments for airguns), and the ideal distance to sight in each individual load.

If Rob3dr’s sight height is 2 inches or so, then he has a very nice, predictable drop between 65 and 80 yards, shooting those 54.2grainers at 845fps zeroed at 50 yards.
Out of Rob3dr’s rifle, it amounts to a maximum of .78 inch rise on the way to the 50 yard mark, then a pretty regulated drop of a one inch drop every 5 yards out from 60 to 80 yards. Then it is closer to 1 and 1/2 inch drop every 5 yards out to 95 yards. At 100 yards there is still 68 fpe remaining in that slug.

With the 72.3 grainer, in Rob3dr’s rifle, there is a whopping 84fpe retained in the slug at 100yards!!! At that range, , in terms of fpe, it beats out a 40grainer .22 long rifle going 1200fps.
