Q:

Jerry’s slugs

Hi all,

I got Jerry’s slugs last week and could not wait to try them. They made my 43’s look like babies. Today I shot the 6 ring slugs at a 1 and a half inch board at 24 yards, and it went through and hit the concrete block behind and mushroomed to 3/4 of an inch. I’m not sure about anyone else, but it seemed that my condor sounded a lot quieter. Maybe because of the size of the slug. The 43’s hit hard a make a huge impact when they hit. I have not used a chrony yet and I’m curious to see the velocity. They did shoot bullseye every shot at 24 yards. If anyone has any info on there chrony and experience please do tell.

Thanks, SeCoda,
I checked out Nomadic Pirate’s photos, and I realized that he was shooting much higher on the hog’s forehead than I did. I was about an inch or two above the eyes—–he’s about 5 or 6 inches above the eyes. That must be the difference between success and failure. My boar was feeding with his head down too, and I was above him on a bank, so I think I had a straight (non-glancing) shot. It must be shot placement. This inspires me to go hunting again.

yeah combro doesn’t do those slugs well. been there lol!

Not surprised, the bastards are so long it must monkey up the calculation. 😎

How did NP do this with a .25 Cuda?

NP posted this later….
“If you carefully look at the skull picture you’ll see that I shot right at the top of the head, I was on a bank probably 8 -10 feet of elevation, I waited for the porker to put the head down to root , this will give you a perfectly square shot, with the low power of airguns it’s paramount you get no slant on the head shots , that way your pellet WILL penetrate,…and that’s a fact !!!!!”

You absolutely need a proper chrony if you want accurate numbers for the long slugs. I’ve got nothing against the combro but it is clearly not useful for this application.

I’m not sure I even trust the Eun Jin numbers but 70 FPE does not sound unreasonable to me given what I know about your set-up. We’re still left with not knowing the true performance though.

I think low power and the angle of your shots (which might cause glancing impacts) might be the cause of this hog getting such a reputation.

SECoda,
If I’m interpreting you right, you’re suggesting that the 669 70fpe?? shot WAS an accurate reading. Yeah, that makes sense to me. The others are definitely way off, but maybe the Combro got that one shot right. It matches up with the 671 fps that AirGunner1 says I should be getting.

I might gues this is what you are actually getting with the 7 rings and that makes sense with the 795 fps/60 fpe you are seeing with the 43 gr Eun Jins (if they are correct).

669 70 fpe ??

If you look at Jerry’s Surefire post and the comparative numbers you can see that the energy gain from a 31 grain Kodiak to a 57 grain Surefire is about 20%.

I also found this comment on the chrony on Pyramyd. It doesn’t sound like it uses visible light. I wss surprised what it looked like in the video.

I owned a Combro and found it very limited. First, it doesn’t fit the muzzle of all guns, so you are limited as to when you can use it. Second, the screen spacing is less than two inches, so accuracy is dubious. You get a number, but who is to say what it means? Third, because it uses IR screens, it doesn’t work well in brightly lit situations. I don’t consider a Combro to be a serious chronograph.

The chronograph works on the break of the light emmission, so even arrows work in chronographs.

I was going to ask “What did you use to verify 2200 psi ?”, but it is irrelevent as I don’t believe there is any way that even 3000 psi could push 70.5 gr at 922 in a 24 inch barrel, with your setup and not changing the power wheel or something from your previous shots.

The 70.5 gr should be around 671 fps and the 60.8 gr around 719 fps.

All right, after posting the above, I got off my butt and drove over to Phat 96’s house and borrowed his Combro. The results make no sense at all to me, and I suspect something is wrong. Check out these data and tell me what the hell is going on.

Power wheel set at 12, 105 gram hammer, refill to 2200 after every five shots:

Pointed Eun Jin 43 grain, two strings of five shots each
1. 842 67 fpe 1. 806 62 fpe
2. 818 63 fpe 2. 804 61 fpe
3. 818 63 fpe 3. 795 60 fpe
4. 796 60 fpe 4. 790 59 fpe
5. 801 61 fpe 5. 794 60 fpe

So far, so good. The above makes sense to me. Now here comes the weird part. The 7 rings slugs were going FASTER, according to the Combro. That defies the laws of physics, so something is wrong here and I need some help from you gentlemen.

Jerry’s 7 ring slugs, 70.5 grain
1. 922 133 fpe 1. 918 131 fpe
2. 916 131 fpe 2. 910 129 fpe
3. 916 130 fpe 3. 911 130 fpe
4. 669 70 fpe ?? 4. 908 129 fpe
5. 906 128 fpe 5. 912 130 fpe

Jerry’s 6 ring, 60.8 grain slugs were also absurdly fast, according to the Combro:
1. 935 120 fpe
2. 961 126 fpe
3. 958 125 fpe
4. 952 124 fpe
5. 939 121 fpe

So, what is going on here? I’m guessing that the Combro is accurately reading the lighter EJ pellets, as those numbers look right. I further suspect that it isn’t equipped to measure the speed of long [heavy ?] slugs, as those numbers look screwed. Combro’s are made in Britain, where 12 fpe is FAC, and the printed directions say, “Max power 50+ fpe”. Maybe this thing simply cannot measure above 70 fpe, or maybe the slugs are so long that they trip the two lights in the wrong way. Theories, anyone? Oh yeah, about that hog, the point of this whole discussion: If the EJ numbers are accurate, what’s your estimate of the fpe of the 7 ring slugs when they impacted the hog’s skull on two occasions? I was just 15 yards away from him, firing downward.

Yes, I don’t have a chrony but maybe an island guy can lend me one. I’m damn curious myself so I’ll try and get the info for us to ponder and figure out what’s going on. Walt out here made my barrel 17 & 3/8ths inches long, so it is just barely under the end of the Talon SS frame. Our thinking was that this would protect the muzzle from damage as I carry the rig around in a backpack and I might set it down hard.

Looks like he is using an 18″ barrel and hi-flo valve so it may down around 70-80 fpe.

Oh yeah… Well, I’m thinking that some numbers would be very informative. We’re joking about a monster hog but I’m thinking we’re really just looking at lower velocity than required.

He said a while back he didn’t have one…

I’d really like to see some chrony numbers. Or did I miss them?

quote Norgeiron:

Yeah, a heart/lung shot might be up next, but not on that particular hog. I’ve beat him up enough in the last thirty days. Since he survived, I figure he earned the right to live on and sire some babies with those hot mamas out there in the swamp.

You got you a hogzilla out there! Did you ever chrony those slugs?
