Q:

Just ordered my first Edgun…say hi to the newb.

Hello Everyone!!!

This is my first post, but I have been reading and enjoying your posts for the last week or so. I just ordered my first Edgun from Tony! I have a .25 R3M Long coming with the next shipment (Nov. that’s all he said). Tony is not the most talkative of fellows, is he? It took me 2 weeks to finally decide what I wanted. I have to say this site has helped me with my decision tremendously. Thank you all for sharing your knowledge with me. I haven’t seen a more loyal and proud family of members towards any other gun, as much as the Edgun….that is what swayed me over.

Well, now that the gun is ordered its time for a scope. Well here goes…. I want a scope with a 5-6 times zoom range that’s great in low light, not too heavy, not too long, parallax adjustments from 10 yards to infinity, great eye relief, great tracking, durable, good warranty, and under $1000 bucks. lol
Well…I really do…but its not gonna happen. I have however narrowed my selection down to 7. A couple are over my budget (as there always will be) and the rest are in range. Can this great forum help me in: #1 selecting the one best for me #2 Put the 7 selections in an order from best choice to worst choice (if there is a worst…they’re all quite good im sure).

Info about me: live in Houston Texas. Lots of places to go and shoot…including back yard, thick wooded areas near subdivisions, short drive to the north, south, east, and west with acres upon acres of undeveloped land. Some of it is open, some is wooded (nice to have friends with acres and acres of land). Lots of plinking, hunting birds, squirrels, rabbits, coons, bobcats, and coyotes, as well as target shooting (outdoors and not at a range). No point in shooting anything under 15 yards…very interested in acquiring the skills to shoot beyond 125 yards. Mostly 25-100 yards. Oh, and I do lots and lots of night shooting. So a good low light scope is B I G ! !

I look forward to all comments from anyone that has something to say…but im also looking for replies from Zocoloco, Knifemaker, Ted, and Oldgoat. Ted….you’re my hero! Mr. EdgunUSA himself…What?!? jk 😆

I’m just waiting for George….so far no reply. I asked him a few questions regarding warranty. If everything sounds good, I’ve decided to try the Delta. If I don’t like it, I’ll sell it and get the Zeiss. If its everything it says it is….it should be the perfect scope on that gun…IMO. But, after shooting for a year….who knows what I’ll think. ❓

He´ll answer tomorrow. The shop is closed on weekends. The warranty is ten years on the 4.5-30. That´s regulated on EU ruling for some reason. George is a man of his word so warranty issues are definitely not a problem – except for the shipping between continents. I´m 100% sure it won´t take long before Delta has a US importer and since the warranty is international…
I´m confident you´ll like the Delta. What´s not to like ?? Very good glass, good reticle for airgunning and more than fair price on the whole kaboodle.

BTW – even the two most bullheaded persons who always find something negative to remark on anything bought Delta´s after shooting with, clicking and looking thru mine ; Dr. Evil and one other pinhead who´s not a member on this Forum ,thank God for that. The honorable Doc bought a 4.5-30 (of course) and the other guy a 6-24 AO and he had already decided on Vortex but had a change of hearts.

I know folks that are real happy buying discounted demo models of Zeiss on their airguns if you just want a Zeiss. They are new and have full warranty and I have never heard of any problem with one. You save roughly $270 so it brings them down to about $900. There are several different camera shops selling them like that. It must be a requirement of Zeiss since it is so prevalent. As I said I had this scope and the Sightron next each other and we all gave the edge to the Sightron for brightness and clarity was identical and tops. The Rapid-Z reticle was pretty good I thought.

My take on this: if you have doubts or buyers remorse go with Zeiss and hopefully live happily ever after. If you on the other hand feel adventurous and want to go against the stream and at the same time have a chance on being one of the pioneers with one of the first Delta’s in US go with the Titanium. Delta is coming . Fast. So you won’t be the owner of the only one is US in a couple of years time.
Like i said-all too good scopes to be ignored or go by un-noticed.

Thank you KM for taking the time to write all of that. I have been an consumer pro photographer for many years. Everyone in photography knows Zeiss is king when it comes to optics. I’m in agreement. I don’t own any zeiss becuase they are just so dang expensive. If I could get the same features I’m getting in the Delta for a $1149 Zeiss, it would be a runaway. I don’t know why but Zeiss has always seemed to me to be a company that is slow to change in some ways. In pioneering major conceptual changes that eventually become industry standards…yes. They, like you said, are funded to research for NASA, military’s, or government around the world….that’s why. But when Joe Schmo wants something, they are JUST NOT GONNA GET IT WITH ZEISS. I would have loved to buy Zeiss lenses with some of my cameras…but they never have the model I’m quite looking for. Never quite the zoom range, or the right apature, or the right specialty lens characteristic. With Zeiss you take what they got (and don’t expect they make it next year – cuz they won’t) and what they got is BAD ASS. If you want a standard lens or a standard scope that have standard fixed lenses or standard zooms…then Zeiss is the one to beat. If you want variety….Zeiss is ALMOST ALWAYS the last choice. That’s how Nikon, mamiya, canon, Leica, and others all exist…..they are making lens and scopes that Zeiss will never do…and they know it. In the camera world it’s Nikon or Canon or its less then 5% of the market share. Why? Because they listen. that’s what all these small independent companies are doing in the scope world…making a sub par product (according to Zeiss) and offering features at a price point. I would LOVE to get a Zeiss with the features I want. The only model that’s close is the conquest 5-25x. Surprisingly it’s a model that I can afford and justify. Deltas have just about everything I’m looking for….sounds too good to be true. Zeiss has most of the features, but not all, and is $300 more (no big deal). These are the finalists. Question now is, do I take a chance with the Delta sight unseen on faith, a couple good reviews, and looks great on paper? Or get a “settle for scope” in a Zeiss (damn nice settle for scope!).

Looking forward to seeing one! 😀

Knife

Delta makes very good scopes for the price. Japanese made, not to mix with Chinese made scopes regardless who monitors or specs the Chinese work. Or Korean. Or Philippino.
Delta isn’t a Zeiss though nor is it S&B, Swarovski nor Kahles. Just very good scopes at very good price.
They obviously decided to go against mid-level scopes like Leo, Sightron,Bushnell, Nikon, Meopta and such and compete with their top-of-the-liners. And succeeded!

Been listening, but not talking. Learn more that way! 😆

This new Delta sounds interesting! Would love to see-try one.

Tedd=Oldoat wrote, have been out hunting at dusk and, if I can see my quarry with my eyes, I can pick it up with the Hawke. Well, that’s pretty good. But the point to good optics is that you should be able to see things that you “CAN’T see with the naked eye. 😉 Especially in Low Light.

Now about compairing scopes in stores. Store lighting will LIE to you! And don’t go the the door to look thru the scopes. Hand the clerk your Drivers Lic. and take them Out side. Store Doors aren’t optical glass, and can really screw up what you think you are seeing. 👿 And lastly, try to do this in the late evening when the sun is setting. Get a feel of the different scopes low light ability. This is when game is the most plentiful.

And if you can, see what you can in the suns glare. (Do not look at the sun directly,) Either quartering away from it, or under neath it. Does the scope flair out or become milky? If so. It has poor lens or coatings.

And does the scope have good G-Force rating? If so, what is it. Lupy if famous for lying about their scopes. They make a big deal about their friction lock adjustments. It’s a marketing speak for cheap, crap. Same shit as on old .22 rimfire scopes from the last century. And how about their unsurpassed 750 G shock test. Unsurpassed in the industry??? Well, their 750 G test may very well be unsurpassed by other manufactures, who test to 750 or lower, but Zeiss test to 1500 G. and that IS the Higest in the industry. And it doesn’t matter if it is their cheapest entry level Scopes which are German components , assembled in the USA, for 400+, or a 13,000, Top Sniper Scope. You have Zeiss, You have quality.

Zeiss also has the highest rated coatings and Light transmission. That’s not my opinion. It is Listed by the internationl Optics Testing Org. and Zeiss is Top Dog. In fact the only Optic that rivels it is Hensolt. In fact, Hensolt is the very Top of the TOP. Bar None. I have had this pointed out to me more than once. That Hensolt Beat Zeiss in the European Test on Light gathering. (What they didn’t know was that Hensolt IS ZEISS. It’s their Military Optics Division) Ever wonder who makes the most expensive-highest quality cameras on earth? Canon? Minox? Sony? Nikon? Not even close. They are Hastleblads. (Bet I spelled this for shit). 😆 The are the cameras used by NASA. And have been for dechades. And they are Damed expensive. Like a years+ salary for most folks. Again. Again a division of Zeiss

So when I see it posted that brand X bested Zeiss in a store shoot out, I always wonder What Zeiss, to What Other brand. It always ends up the same. A bottom line Zeiss agains the very cream Dela Cream of the other brand. Zeiss’s worst against their best. And Hell, Zeiss usually beats those test as well.

Most people have no idea what to test for, or how to do it. Whats more, very few know that Manufatures set their scopes for shipping for Retail so that they look their very best at short indoor range. In florecent light. Especially the cheaper scope manufacturers. They are looking for sales at point of sale. (In Store), Not performance in the field. How many of us have bougth optics that looked great in the store and been dissapointed in the field? Think about it.

Quality cost for a reason.

Here are a few questions for thought:

Who invented adjustable optics for fireArms?
Who developed Aspheric Lens
Who developed Lens Coating for controling light in th einterior of the optic tube? For superior light gathering?
Who developed the 4X4 or duplex Ret. (Lupy claims to have, but didn’t have it for well over 50 years after the orginal) Typical Lupy bull shit.
Who produced the first shock resistant rifle scope?
Who Produces the highes rated shock resistant scope?
Who was the first to introduce scratch resistant lens in a Scope?
Who was the first to give us Hard Anodized finishes on scope tubes?
Who was to use hardned AirCraft High “T” alu. tubes rather than the industry standard old heavy steel tubes?Who developed the first light gathering-low light hunting scopes, sniper scopes, designed to shoot at a dark target in low light, or on moon light nights? Star light nights?
Who developed the first low light Ret’s? Fast accusition Ret’s?
Who introduced the first detent tracking adjustment, for windage and highth. rather that the old highly unreliable friction adjustments?
Who brought us the ability to change zoom? To change Zoom without changing Eye Relief?
Who Brought us the first Variable Scopes? Who brought us the first fully transferable LifeTime Warranty. No Questions ask!

and when some one tell you that brand x is jsut as good as Zeiss, I have to wonder how much of the tech. in the said scope is a direct copy of what Zeiss Pionered. Most if not all of it. There are several very high end Scope companies now claiming to have the very best lens in the world in their scopes. Sholt lens. And who is Sholt? You Guessed it! 😉

This list is only scratching the surface, and getting WAY Booring. Besides, the answer is always the same! Zeiss! 😉 😀

I sold it in favor for a new one later on. Maybe in .25 that too.

Looking forward to it! May I ask why you sold the matador? Dow you have another model on order?

I’ll try to film some sequences thru the 4.5-30 tomorrow so you can see how the reticle really is like. It’s not from edge-to-edge but rather placed so that all four sides are “open”. This makes a moving target easier to see -and the surroundings – while taking aim/aiming. The middle dot is extremely small. It looks like a needle stick on a target = very easy to aim at very small targets. I was shooting small flies with my .22LR at 50m target when those landed on the paper. Fun! I could point the dot on a fly’s head and it didn’t get covered by it like it would’ve been with every other reticle i know.

The Matador? Sold it. The WST has a Delta Optical Titanium 6-24×42.
Coda is right though since i had an MTC Viper on it. With the SCB (xmas tree) reticle.

As I think about it I think Sir Ville said he did try a MTC Viper for a while on the Edgun. It is more in the Hawke category (maybe a bit better clarity) with an xmas tree reticle. Another good choice for the budget minded ($500 arena) but not in a Delta/Sightron/Zeiss class. We actually have a supplier on them in Wisconsin but I don’t think they import the exact model we want when I checked on them a month or so ago. All in all not a bad scope. MTC are made by Optisan.
