MATADOR R3M on it’s way to Norway, – arrived finally….
Yes I know……. π³ π³ π³
I’ll try not to start another mammut thread like the one here:
http://talonairgun.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=19488
– but yes, I have taken the plunge and ordered (and paid for) a brand new R3M std. walnut cal.22. As there are no Edgun representatives in Norway, I have been dealing with Ed directly……
I also ordered a multishot breech to fit on my single shot R3s…….. π
So now the wait begins……. π₯
But this time I am at least prepared for the worst. I don’t expect to get it until towards late autumn………
I’ll keep you updated though, and again shipping is the most difficult issue I think………
We’ll see………
Cheers

Can the doctor do a .25 ms kit for me? After all of the hoopla now I want to try one. π
The MS kit i got over a half a year ago was rough , harsh and ratty. Never liked the MS idea so i sold it to Dr. Evil who’s a bona fide tinker. Under his ownership the MS breech got to a state it worked smoothly and the mags indexed without any hitches but this took its toll on the Doc. After all filing, drilling, polishing and greasing he got pissed on the whole MS and sold it again.
The guy who bought it received a well working MS indeed. But like said that required hours and hours of work.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 2. This POS iPhone sucks though …
It seems logical the “feel” of a multi action would not be buttery smooth, since it now has a mechanical interface with a
magazine, which in turn has a physical interface with the breech. I assume a certain degree of break-in “grinding”/”roughness”
would be quite logical, especially in light of your remarks regarding the apparent immediate shipment after assembly process.
Might it be possible, a new owner confronting a different “feel” of a new cocking mechanism, might pause, or slightly deviate from
a routine “up-back-forward-down” cocking action, may experience an occasional magazine malfunction, by not giving the bolt action
the appropriate pressures to each of the four part sequence of cocking a bolt action multi-shot? Perhaps a new owner needs to develop
a very deliberate, and firm, Up…Back…Forward…Down cocking sequence to both break in the action, and adjust himself to the new “feel”
of a multi-shot?
It seems possible the heavy OEM grease, and the micro-grinding/fitting taking place, might be the primary causes of the initial rough
feeling some users have reported? Wingman said a proper cleaning, and moly paste, made a serious difference in his gun. However,
would a super lube delay, or deny the final abrasion that might fine polish the fitment of the bolt, magazine, breech assembly? Thus smoothing
it’s “feel” after break-in?
The multi-mechanical breech seems to require some shooter adjustment/acceptance that it will not feel the same as the simpler single shot we
have become accustomed to.
It now seems a necessary break-in period, cock and grind several hundred pellets through the gun, allows it to develop it’s own fine fit tolerances.
A thorough followup clean and re-lube after break-in, might also be a mandatory process to get the new multi to where the shooter wants it.
Of course, Ed has already told us as much, just in fewer words.
I am beginning to believe inadequate break-in, and shooter re-adjustment to a multi breech, are the primary culprits for the “problems” being reported
by the new owners.
Your thoughts???
(Just re-read updated Wingman nz thread: http://talonairgun.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=27986 This should be a must read for any R3M owner!!!)
Another hmmmmmm from my side….. π
I’ve had ample time to inspect my new R3M, – and something puzzles me a little:
It does not look like this gun has been shot, – not even once. There are no marks anywhere. Nothing at all. Inside the breech it looked “untouched. No scratchmarks in the anodizing, – no nothing ! π―
And the mags exactly the same. Mint condition and seemingly untouched by man/gun/whatever……
What has happened to test procedures I wonder ???? π
ED ???
I have been playing with the action a little, and it did not take long for scratchmarks to appear. A few cycles with the mag in place, and you could tell that friction has already started to finegrind and break in the gun. The bolt is already behaving much better….
Yepp, I have the first generation of multishot breeches. As I ordered it immediately after release, I am not surprised. I also ordered a spare breech as an upgrade kit with two new mags. Thanks God Ed forgot to put it into the box. He now owes me one, – he has confirmed that, – and the good news is I shall get the most up-to-date model….. π
My first generation MS-breech seems to index the mag quite nicely. Still with a lot of friction between the mag and the breech walls. Hopefully that will sort itself out. However with the construction where the indexing ball bearing is pushing hard against the rim of the mag as it rotates, the mag is being pressed against the “back wall” of the mag slot in the breech in the process. As I understand it, – that detail has now been changed with the ball bearing closer to the center of the mag. Probably a wise move…….. π
There’s plenty more to come as I gain more experience. Wingman and others: Thanks for all your help and good advice !!!
Cheers

Yea the alloy breach is still smooth to cock but it gets much smoother with the proper treatment.
If you remove the bolt from the action you will see the internal bore is rough from the bead blast process and and the anodizing process.
If you polish the bore of the action with some cutting compound and finish it like chrome with Autosole then burnish in some moly paste, I think you will find it is a different action all together. Dont use anything too abrasive as you dont want to increase the bore size.
I polish the barrel with autosole on a bore snake with the barrel removed. I put one end of the bore snake in the vice and hold the other end while working it back and forward and twisting the barrel as I go.
After a good polish I run a wet solvent patch then dry patches till clean.. this will remove any flakes of built up lead and leave a better finish that will prevent lead fouling for longer periods between cleaning. I only do this once after the break in period as dry patches are sufficient after that.
Wingman: I just got my 30 cal R3 long. It has an aluminum breech and I was wondering how smooth the cocking effort would be on it. All of my other Matadors have a steel breech and I have seen numerous topics and posts that state that the newer aluminum breech Matadors have a lot of drag and a rough feel.
I have to say that my 30 cal long is pretty smooth while cocking, even with the increased force needed to overcome the increased HST! Once the gun is cocked, the bolt cycles very easily. It does have some drag that I hope is caused by the βstickyβ assembly grease that Ed uses. I hope that the cocking action will only improve with use and an application of moly lube.
Donβt get me wrong; If my 30 cal longβs bolt never gets any better than it is right now, I can easily live with it!
Could you explain to me/us what your procedure is for polishing the barrel?
Inquiring minds want to know!
Hey Trygve,
I imported several .22cal R3M’s from the same batch and shipment as yours (and Hemns) so I can compare our guns on the same state of engineering. There have been changes made to the action and mag on the following batch (that have now arrived in USA) that Ed claims has made it smoother.
However.. All of the R3M’s I have imported were a little harder to cock than my single shot for sure..
My single shot is also from the same batch as yours and has the same steel breach (ordered at the same time as you did).
As I have tried to explain in the post Hoot has pointed out these two actions really cant be compared, they are two very different animals.
Last week I had one of my R3Ms returned from a customer for its first service (1500 pellets), Something I offer free with the sale of my Edguns. With this service I do a full strip, replace all O rings with good quality ones, retune/moly the trigger, adjust reg and hammer spring if needed to return any lost velocity consistency through the break in period, clean and polish the barrel and remove all factory grease replacing it with high quality moly paste on steel components and silicone grease on the rubbers.
The first thing I noticed was how smooth this action had become after 1500 shots and the owner has told me it is running flawlessly.
The action has defiantly run in and it was even smoother to what Id call “buttery” once the new moly had been burnished in.
There are no indexing issues with these 1st generation mags on my shipment and Id be interested to know if it is present in the .22cals or just limited to this first batch of .25cals?
As much as Im really not a fan of Multishot and prefer a single shot, my R3M has been getting plenty of use.
It is however not as light to cock as the customers one I have just service (easily as light as the one looks to be in Eds vid)
But mine has only had about a couple of tins of pellets through it.
It is still very smooth and I have adapted my method of cycling it to second nature so I no longer feel any awkwardness until I go back to my steel breech single shot R3 and remember how great it is cycle in comparison…
I hope by prematurely putting molly paste in my action (for the purpose of my review) it hasnt prevented my action from running in properly.. hopefully it will get even better like the one I just serviced with another 1000 shots or so.
Without knowing for sure I recommend you put 3 tins of pellets through your R3M before considering the moly treatment.
However, I would put moly paste on the hammer and cocking pin from day one as this is a very high friction point and it helps a lot.
Skip to the end part of this vid and you can see me cycling my R3m with ease and without any problems.
The only niggle I have with this action is the mag disconnecter lever, I often knock it into the downward position preventing it from indexing the next pellet.. It may just be Im handling the gun but it happens often.
Again…a bolt problem already resolved in NZ, per Hemn’s post: http://talonairgun.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=27986
Worth a try and a fairly quick and inexpensive fix.

Pulling on a stiffie eh?
So at least now I have managed to open the box. The gunbag had been wrapped in some kind of Glad Pack plastic foil and was supported on all sides by white Styrofoam. No chance for this gun to get damaged by accidental drops or rough handling en route…..:

The delivery seems pretty standard. Apart from the gun itself, two mags, fill probe, some spare O-rings and the instruction manual. The latter revealing when the gun was assembled, tested and stored. In my case on Aug. 31st this year…:

What was NOT included was the test sheet that I received with my other Matadors. I wonder why not……. π
Also unfortunately, ED had forgotten to include the spare replacement breech that I so much wanted to test on my single shot Matadors…… π
I’ve had no time to shoot yet, but I have dry fired a few shots just to feel the action. First impression is as expected a little stiff or even “sticky”. Especially when I try to move the bolt back from it’s forward position…..
To be continued I suppose……. π
– so now finally !!!! π
After several months of waiting, – the last three being my own fault as I have been out of the country………. π³
But this afternoon I managed to pick up the box that the “Panalpina” (airfreighter) agent had been kind enough to keep for me until my return……
My very first observation: I have yet to see nicer girls/women working with an airfreighter agent. They were so nice that I spent quite some time with them. Located in the middle of nowhere close to the main airport in Oslo. Some 45 minutes drive from my house……….
My second observation: I have yet to see an airgun better boxed than this one. Congratulations ED ! I have received a few airguns in my time, – but never one that was this well protected/boxed :8:
With one of the other family members waiting in the background, -here’s the box now residing on my dining table, – :

I have not had time to open it yet, – so I really do not know what’s inside. Neither does ED for that matter. In theory it should be my new std ca.22 R3M and a spare multishot breechkit. But ED says he does not remember whether he put the latter inside the box or not. I’ll find out soon I guess……… π
So far so good……… π

Hi all,
Just a quick update for those interested. My R3M is indeed still in Finland with Marrti. As I am out of the country until December, I shall not be able to take delivery until then. Here in Lanzarote just off the west coast of Africa, I find airguns not suited for my kind of shooting anyway (a multishot would have been nice though)…. π :

PS: I have recently had some serious broadband connection problems. Some idiot dug through my phone cables, and it took ages before they were repaired. This is really a “manana” country…. π
Dear Trygve;
I am wondering to know what is the status of your new R3M?
as mine is in the airport warehouse and i have wait till next week Monday, because of the official holiday for the election till Sep 22nd.
waiting is killing me :4: :4: :4: :4:
Edit; Please Trygve, once you get the new R3M, i want you to go back to your mamut thread and put the new R3M with both R3 & Cricket, R3 vs R3M vs Cricket. .
My gun is supposed to be with Marrti in Finland on Sept. 9th. I just had a confirmation from Ed. It remains to be seen how it will be dispatched to Norway. Hopefully it will be here waiting for me when I return….. π
Dear Hemn, – I keep my fingers crossed for you. Hopefully everything will run smoothly for you, and that you will experience no further obstacles during transit ! Also I am so much looking forward to your first experience when you get it. Please keep us updated on any developments……..
Cheers

If anyone can itΒ΄s him. He may sound and look pretty stupid but heΒ΄s a perfectionist and never satisfied with things so he always finds a way to improve everything. Just for the fun of it he bought a lathe to be able to fix some flaws on his EdGun and to make parts for his Cricket.
The MS kit as delivered vs his “Doctored” version arenΒ΄t even comparable. I donΒ΄t think he made any new parts for it but rather made all the tolerances of its existing parts where those shouldΒ΄ve been when it left Russia.
