Ranger 45
Well I have a tracking number for the Ranger 45 that was assembled, test fired, chronyed, and shipped today.
28 inch barrel, standard stock and black crerakote finish, $1230 dollars including shipping.
To early to get the arrival date, it is not in the system yet.
Chrony numbers were:
Round ball. low setting 3000 PSI……1018 FPS
225………. low setting 3000 PSI……..877 FPS
405 shot 1 hi setting 4500 PSI………804 FPS
340 shot 2 hi setting 4500 PSI………843 FPS
These numbers will improve by 30 to 50 FPS as the rifle breaks in.

I have one of my rifles set-up with 15/40 MOA mounts from Barrett. They are fantastic rings, way more than an air rifle requires as far as strength goes. I tried them first at 40 MOA and found that I couldn’t adjust low enough for 50 yard crosshair on POI shots! At 15 MOA, they are perfect and allow adjustment from close to 200 yard zero.
A better way to go might be to talk to MAC 1 (Tim), he was making drrop mounts at one point. If he offers them still, you’ll probably be happy with 15-20 moa mounts.

That is a great idea, I have also used duct tape. I need some droop bases for that Bushnell, I don’t like to shim too much, always afraid of tweaking the tube.

Only two rifling were intact, they were smeared by the interior of the target. But those two rifling have bumps at the base, i believe they were doing the same thing, but it is really hard to tell on that slug.
I had a leaking fill nipple today, I checked every oring I had to see if I had the same size as the one on the Ranger that had failed. I even drove 30 miles to town to try and find an Oring. Then I realized that I had seen a small Oring that was perhaps the correct size.
I checked it and found it to be the correct one, you will never guess where it was.
It was on the shaft of the safety pin that fits in the side of the rifle, Dan Mcvey had put an extra fill nipple Oring on the shaft of the safety.
I put it in and the rifle is up and running.

So the harder lead smeared past the base, and the near pure lead didn’t? Could you make out the base of the Vogel slug, or was it to far gone?
One thing I have forgotten to mention with all the things going on in life.
I recovered three bulets from my backstop, which is a saturated crossbow target. I rotated it so that the bullets hit the point of the square instead of the flat of the square, so there would be more room for penetration.
Problem is that when your shooting bullet hole for bullet hole, something has to give.
I went to check the target and I had a lot of stuffing on the ground behind the target, i picked it up to throw away and found three bullets.
One was a really messed up Vogel 385 grain HP an the other two were the 300 grain hard cast Oregon Trail bullets.
The Oregon trail bullets were unusual in that the lands on the rifling had smeared the lead past the heel of the bullet, they stick back nearly 4000th of an inch.

The scba tank I took only had 3800 PSI in it, appears to have a leak. But I shot with 3800 PSI and used the 200 grain Devastators that Butcher was so kind to send me.
Three shots @3800 were 1070. 1032, 933. Those first two shots put that into the 500 FPE range.
So I took them down to the range and tried them at 50 yards. Being as I was down to 3700 PSI, I filled between shots, if I had been able to fill to 4000 PSI or a little higher the results may have been different. I only had 14 bullets so I was careful not to waste them.
I used a Bushnell 3200 7×21 3200 on 14 power and shot off of a Cladlwell range bag. With all the elevation dialed in I am still 2 inches low at 50 yards, so I will need to buy a can of beer to get some shims today. I suspect it may have resulted in some up and down stringing, which happens I am told at the end of the adjustments in elevation.
On mid power level 3 shots went into .85 inch at 50 yards. sighted in at 85 yards your just under 3 inches high at 50 yards and just under 3 inches low at 100.
Altho I am not a big cast hollowpoint fan, this is clearly a deer and coyote load, I suspect cast of soft alloy, on deer sized animals using chest shots this would expand and do great mayhem to the heart and lungs.
I also tried the Booster pump for the first time since getting it. My leaky scba tank was down to 3500 PSI when I got back. I hooked it up to the intake and put the 85 PSI shop compressor on the toggle switch end and opened the valves. It took four manipulations of the toggle switch to fill from 3500 to 4000 PSI, and about two minutes. the pressure on the scba tank did not seem to move.
I had filled that scba tank mistakenly to around 5000 PSI and it startd leaking around the burst disk, it leaks down to just under 4000 PSI and seems to stay there. So I guess it will be the booster scba tank until I get the leak fixed. I still have two other 4500PSI 44 cuft tanks in the meantime.
After I get the scope shimmed, I will fill to 4000 PSI and see if all three shots will be in the 1000+ FPS range.
Bottomline: 200 Devastator HP @ 3800 PSI=1070 FPS@500FPE= .85 inches @ 50 yards.

Well now……gotta like that! Looks like that Ranger likes boolits on the “lighter side” after all! At least the Devastator, along with the EPP/UG.
That rifle appears to start getting more efficient at 200+grains on medium……valve appears to have it’s priorities straight for a powerhouse rifle! Impressive velocity/energy/accuracy for a 207grainer.
So is the Devastator going to be mold#3? Maybe get some pure lead, and mix it 3/4 20:1 1/4 pb? Then compare pure lead Devastator performance on coyotes/paper/chrony strings with the 75/25 alloy?

At 1070fps/526FPE, I’m thinking that just may reliably DRT coyote/bobcat sized game, especially with bobcat heart-shot accuracy like that! Probably a bit much for valuable bobcat pelts though……going to have to see how the coyote tests go before using that slug on valuable fur.
Hydrostatic shock may likely play a role at this point on predators, seeing as a 35lb. predator would be getting hit with energy in excess of 14 times it’s own body weight. On a level frontal chest shot, that slug expanding to .75-80+caliber very well may not exit a coyote.
SORTA like hitting an 800lb. elk with 11,200fpe….and Elk are MUCH more sturdy than Bobcats/Coyotes.

Thats frustrating as hell.
I got 34 pounds of 20-1 and my mold today, the furnace, ladle, handles and lube won’t be here until late tuesday, so no big bullets until Wednesday.
I have not shot for several days, it is just raining and raining, probably the same where your at. It is supposed to start getting dryer this weekend.
Keep thinking I should carve my stock down to smaller dimensions and make a bead cheek piece on it, classic style, while I am at it.

Charlie , ya i am wanting to get this action so i can finish this gun , and shoot it , every thing is ready to go for it.
i need to do a video in the sun light with this gun so you can see the way the wood grain looks with this clear west systems epoxy , regular pictures do not do it justice, they just do not pick up the candy deep 3 demensional grain effect that you see in person.
one thing that is cool about using this epoxy is that you can polish it to the finish that you like, from a dull finish to satin finish to a very high gloss deep candy looking finish which is what i did , i like the high gloss because of how deep it looks and the different glows that come out of the grain of the wood , some might not like it this way ,
i have camo material and also a camo gortex custom gun covers that i use for the rain up here , but this stock is now salt water proof , it will be a good equal coating on the wood – to the Cerakote that Dan uses on the action , that is also salt water proof -very durable finish.
i gess this rain will be gone for a while starting Saturday night from what they say , they better dam well be right i am sick of this weather i drive in it all day ! gets old fast behind the wheel ! driving in Oregon / Washington all day ! SUN ! please ! HA ! HA !

They pick tags around the first of may and notify you around the 15th, today was the last day to put in for the drawing. If I do not draw a tag, I can just buy an archery tag and go after them with my 46 year old recurve.
