The T.U.R.D Coming !

Just a pic of the Tactical Utilitran Rifle Design striaght from the Voleworks design dept. This is what ive come up with …. 😕

Its .177 , 15 round mag , collapsible stock , AR grip , pump action , shrouded , 70 shot regulated and at 70cm long.

I wanted to design a gun for the guys who do ” Ratting ” as its known over here ,so its a small take down type gun to shoot rats in barns. If i get the drawings finished in the next couple of weeks the first prototype should start soon arfter on my mates new CNC machining centers .
Ive been drawing on Auto CAD for weeks , and im now experiencing the joys of learning 3D CAD ( for this and my CNC mill).
So i thought id see what you guys like / dislike because its not going to be for sale in the USA …hehe !. 😀
So what do you think !

Yeah I’ve done the lapping thing – helped a bit – my machine isn’t as old as buba b’s but it has the same issue – sloppy in the middle tight on the end – was hoping some better fitting gib strips would allow me to make it acceptable through its travel – just need to find the time to finish it…..

Actually I can get it reasonable, but then I have to turn down the speed…

Ive got a bridgeport.
If you can make use of it it’s all yours.
Know it means travling, but the offers open.

My mill is 5 years old and mainly been running in the middle of the table which is nicely polished , so it binds on the end travel on both x and y . Within months of getting it i replaced the gibs with brass thinking it would help with wear and VERY gentaly lapped the dovetails but at the end of the day i think the cast iron is just poor quality and very soft. How flat the table is ! …. is another question ? , i think the table is being pulled flat as i wind it though , i dont want to check as i think it would scare me. Every time i take it apart i wonder how holes could be drilled so far out and can see why the heads of the cap head bolts are turned down , so they dont interfere with the counter bored holes :shock:. I think my mill had very poor quality control ( if any ) and i would have slapped the machinist if i had seen this standard of machining at any of the places ive worked.
So my options are : ….Ive designed my own CNC mill which i would like to build but need to get my hand on the machinery to make it 😕
…..Buy a new mill ….ouch ! 😯
or Acetal gibs which ive just made and about to try out 🙄
The mags for this gun will be made by CNC and for that im looking for within .05mm tolerance …. more tinkering i think

wile doing up the gibs on the lathe, I started asking my self how the hell they could send them out of the factory in that bad of shape 🙄
the lathe runs 1,000% smoother now with them trued up and polishished, now if I could just get that tail stock to be repeatable, I’d have something going 😆

Super sweet as always Buba.

I do something similar for a one way valve on a fill probe. I just make a hollow stem, machine a groove around one end and then drill tiny holes in the groove into the hollow part. Snap an O ring in that groove and air will flow easily one way but wont go the other. It can handle high psi as well.

I may have to try the screw style.

Well 2 weeks of being mezmerized by my mill traveling backwards and forwards 😯 …. binding on parts …dohhh! ment i had to get away from it. I got some 305 oz motors which made a big inprovement but i still think my dovetails need machining true . Wish i still had my Bridgeport i would have that shite mini mill running smooth in a day 😕 . So lots more tinkering but you wouldnt guess by the pics.
Probe done with the springs for the trigger group so ive had it cock and fire . The pump action looks ok while being slightly painfully to work with the brass push rods leaving dents in my hand but the forgrip will be next.

Both valves for the cylinder done but yet to finish the valve parts and knock open pin to test

Looks abit of a long gun with the cylinder length , same as my T4 with the silencer on !!, ( 23. 5″ for back of breach to end of cylinder ) so im thinking of cutting it down but will have to see if it would fit on my machine. Just hate to waste DOM tubing 😕

Fill valve was an idea given to me by South from the Russian forums , its a simple O-ring on a counter sunk screw . The air will enter up the screw thread with the O-ring to seal , just went with this as its got alot less parts 😀 .
Well my CNC is calling to twist with my mind …… il take an angle grinder to it one of these days …… its all its good for !!!!. 👿

Well the Volework,s manufacturing plant had already thought of using cheap labour from eastern europe but found they have no understanding of the ISO or BS standards . Then they had a plan to move the work to Checklosvakia but by the time the returned work was corrected by the design dept and the works division , any cost saving was ruled out ! 😕 . Then the production was returned to UK plants where they had made all the skilled machinest redundant 😯 ( dickhead managment ! ). This was learnt from past experiance in British engineering industry !!!!
From what ive read the 200oz motors should do the job but at the moment ive got binding on the table. This could be down to alinement of the screws which will have to be shimed as theres not a straight square edge on the machine . If i was running ballscrews i would get 2 to 3 times less friction on the screws and the 200oz would cope better . Ive still got to play more with the motor torque but im hopeing to manage a few jobs before replacing them.

I would save about £10 betweeen the US and UK motors. I can only run the at 3amps but think the rating would go down to about 300oz , il see when i come up with my cunning plan .
Yep Airgunner i thought it was carpal tunnel too , nice little op …in and out in 2 hours …..but then the doc said about disease of the central nervous system and i found i was the only one laughing in the room. More tests to confirm before i book my fight and one night stay in Switzerland …. hehe ! 😀

Buba B…go see a Chiropractor!! They are VERY good @ taking care of carpal tunnel issues and other ‘pins and needles issues!! NO SURGERY!!!

I think my motors are 270’s – I can use 1/8th micro steps on the X and Z but the Y I had to use 1/2 steps to prevent losing steps near the limits.

Also had to check the controller voltage and make sure it was at the max the specs said it could handle.

Might also want to check your rapid speeds, I have mine at 20 for the X, 15 for the Y and 10 for the Z – I could go higher, but that’s fast enough for a hobby mill IMHO.

The plans I used said 190’s should be enough to handle the Mini Mill.

Buba – My parents are visiting from England for two weeks on Sunday, let me know if you need anything from the US and I can order it and have them bring it back to the UK in their baggage so shipping and duty wont be a problem for you.

Not much to the gun at the moment but hopefully this is going to help me in the long term and besides i just couldnt face milling my mags by rotary table . Well the doctor told me to stop winding handles or my hands would fall off ! 😯 , so ive had to come up with a solution. So the 4 year CNC project was dug up from the back of the shed and ive finaly …..well sort of got it working . With the Acme screws and anti backlash nuts i got backlash down to .025mm but ive also found that the 200oz motors are realy not upto the job ( but im still playing with them 😕 ) along with the fact that there isnt a straight square edge or drilled threaded hole to any tolerance on the whole dam machine 😡 . Might as well of used a pistol drill too drill all the holes on the piece of crap mill .
So ive got to find £100 from some where for some new motors 😕 . Ive had to scrape the bed ways as the result of 4 years of just using the middle of the table gave me a nice shiney area and tight binding dovetails 🙁 . Im using CAMbam and Mach 3 at the moment , which proved alot easier than i thought but ive still yet mill anything but the mags will be soon ….maybe !.
