traxxas E-Revo 1:10 brushless
it arrived yesterday, i ordered it as soon as i had sold enough stuff…but it seems like they are in short supply most places, and where its available they want nearly 700 bucks for it….so i ended up canceling the truck at thebarnfloor.com who had it for 609….and went ebay for 660 with 8% bing cashback….making it 608 incl shipping
bought 4 packs of zippy 3S 25C 5000mah batteries and a 8 cell charger for lipo….charger can be programmed in tons of ways, and it does balance charging and all including temp probe
also ordered castle link which allows me to program the ESC, and theres a lot of stuff to change….like braking, acceleration curve, how much initial power it can draw and much more
anyhow the truck….well buggy….no truck…had it not been for the monster truck wheels i would call it a buggy with such a streamlined body and all
its all very nicely laid out…and came completely ready to run…i dropped 8AA into the transmitter, and loaded 2 lipos….and off i went driving a bit carefull….but its very hard not to try see what it can do.
before programming it….it was VERY agressive, launching wheelies as soon as you added more power, allmost hard to keep the front down….it has tons of body roll, and the gear train could sound nicer….but it all works….breakes was set at 50%, which is like a sloppy 1:8 nitro buggy brake, upped it to 75% which is enough to make a stoppie, so i lowered it to 70% which gives lots of breaking, but only does stoppies when max brakes are applied and surface allows it.
this truck should come with a center diff, why they dont dump that 25$ item in there from the start is a mystery to me….with all the wheelie power it would be nice with a centerdiff to transfer the power forward once the front lifts off
second i wish they had used bolts on some of the screws….they just thread into plastic, and is way easy to overtighten, even with great care taken…
third….i would have liked it as a kit….you learn so much from assembling it your self….not i have to guess what to take appart for access a certain part
i got center diff ordered, but it hasnt showed up yet….and i ordered a sway bar kit….this kit is a must ! it helps soooooo much
one tire has allready shredded 🙄 i hope some glue will hold it together so i can get a few more miles out of it
i put my old digital camera on it….it has a lens housing for extra lenses so i though that would protect it …and it did….but the ride was too rough i guess for it to keep recording…it kept ending up with format error….i really wish i had recorded there was some spetacular crashes 🙂

very cool car you got there….im looking into getting some road tires for the vorza…..i had the gps mounted to the vorza….and around 50mph the front tires baloon….i gotta get some belted or prep some regular tires for the highspeed runs….i know its got more in it….got a 44t spur comming that will alow me to mount a 20 or 21T pinion too…should be good for 75+ mph ! going from 17T pinion to 19T just made the whole buggy that more agressive…the motor is no where maxed out….
as for some progressive steering the spectrum will do this…the faster you go the less the steering you get….perfect for speed runs
i wrote a little thing on the spektrum on the rc forum…had it had better range it would be a super radio system
it seems to be mixed feelings with this radio….and i got mixed feelings about it too
i love the rpm sensor and temp sensor….after calibrating the rpm sensor, i took the vorza for a spin, radio measured 30 mph, and gps measured 30.2 (on 3S) so thats pretty accurate, the temp measured the same as my temp gun, so no complaints on that either….i used the loop sensor around the flux tork motor….so i cant speak for the other temp probe.
at high speed 6S run the gps would measure 49 mph, and the radio 54, i suspect theres a certain amount wheel spin at those speeds…and maybe the gps didnt have long enough time to get a good reading.
build, fit and finish is ok, nothing spetacular…..
now for the bad….the dx3s replaced, the am or fm radio that came with the vorza…..and the range is about 2/3 of what the stock system could….i can now only get to the end of my road (90-100y) where before i could get 120-140y, yards out…this is the single most disappointing thing about this system, that very limited range….my traxxas 2.4ghz radio that came with my e-revo will drive the truck out of sight before loosing control…i tested that radio to well over 200 yards (measured with rangefinder)
i took the system back to my LHS, and got it exchanged…but the new system cuts out at the same range….im using the batteries that came with the unit, and the ESC output 6v
so there you have it….now for a bit on mounting the rpm sensor
first i had it mounted to the reciever box…and reading off the pinion gear, but the system aparently has 32.000 rpm limit….pinion that came with the Vorza is black and what i did was polish a quarter of it to a mirror shine with my dremel….worked nice until 32k+ rpm was hit….so the hunt for a better place to mount it with minimum amount of modding….i came up with the center diff housing as a good place…this way i can switch spur and pinion gear however i like without having to do anything to the sensor
i took one of the mounting bars, and milled it to half thickness other wise it would have been too tall and sensor would hit the diff house….once milled (you can do this with a file too…the bar is made of the softest of soft aluminium
the diffmounts plastic is harder to file than the aluminum !…..i used a triangle file, and it took me less than 5 minutes to cut a tiny groove for the aluminum bar….then i drilled a hole and used a tiny screw i had lying around to secure it.
and as luck would have it…the wires fell of the sensor…so i had to resolder those…sigh….

the center diff takes way less rpm than the pinion….and the measurement works out great !
would i recommend this system….no…its short range is simply crap for modern 2.4ghz system, i do like the ability for remote temp reading…thats nice…and i would rater have to temp ports than rpm sensor….so i could monitor batteries and motor at the same time
and for those out there reading that it is DSM2….wrong….spektrum made it compatible with dsm2…but its still 11ms as it lowest setting….where as the dsm2 is 5.5ms…..is just COMPATIBLE not dsm2
what would be cool in future dx3S…would be average speed…who cares or have the time to look at the transmitter to see how fast your going…..be nicer to see average speed….ok nitro guys probably like to see if their engine gets up to top rpm….but simple things like average speed, distance traveled…etc…stuff a simple bike computer can tell you.

Here is what it looks like stock… 1/8 AWD 0.27cc (2.7 hp @ 40k rpm) 2 speed w/3 shoe clutch… Goes over 50mph stock… Slicks but can be converted into a buggy…
I made a flat bottom carbon/kevlar floor pan with enough overhang to stick out the front and back to close off the bumpers and create a little downforce.
Damn thing is so fast it needs some type of progressive speed steering or something, one little turn of the wheel and it goes end for end.
Once I get a mill I want to make some custom shock towers so I can lower the car a bit more and not have to shim down the floor pan… A buddy took it for a spin and cracked one of the plastic like suspension items so I made a replacement out of aluminum. Did some upgrades on the intake tubes and filter system for the carb.
Donuts are crazy, it just spins around like a top… All wheel burnouts from a stand still… It can outrun the radio really quick though. I though I was all fancy with a head temperature sensor and a ir temp gun for taking other temps. I was looking into a system like that a few years back, had an eagle on it or something…
I finally live close to a huge parking lot and I mean huge… 😈
well…..spektrum or not….i mounted a ferrit core on the motors massive 10 guage wires….and it seemed to extend the range the system is capeable of…maybe its just because the castle creations ESC and motor is noisy….
i got 3 novak gears today…stock is 17T, and got 18-19-20T, the 20T is too large with the current spurr gear, so was the 19….but i filed a bit on the motor mount and now it fits with appropriate slack between the gears, so thats 2 teeth more quick calc says about 11% more speed
the spektrums rpm sensor is a piece of shit….wires started to come off, and i had to resolder the thing…not easy when my medications makes my hands shake like crazy….but i got the job done….decided that the only thing that doesnt change is the center diff….so i modded the centerdiff mount a bit, and mounted the rpm censor there….took some filing, dremeling, and supergluing
was very exited to see that not only remembered the correct wire order when i soldered the thing…but also that the sensor actually picked up the little reflective sticker…..
wrote an email to spektrum…to see if the sensor was limited to a certain rpm….cause i had previous had it reading of the pinion gear but it wouldnt measure more than 32k rpm…they wrote back a mail cleverly avoiding to answer my question…tsk tsk…..at least on the diff theres less rpm to measure….so i wont be hitting the rpm limit if it is 32K….think it measures 6000 rpm on 3S, which converted to 32 mph…..now if it would only stop raining, i would go and see if the tlemetry is correct by measuring it with gps….
all in all a nice 2 hours in the garage….
and the vorza is now .24ghz with temp and rpm monitored….next is to see if i can get it to monitor the battery packs voltage, and gte some ferrit cores and mount on the ESC to reciever wire, hopefully the local radioshack will have some
gdamn it….new spektrum dx3s….is uhmmm lacking a bit i think….beyond 70 yards it starts glitching….typical….i read all these good reviews about it…then get it…do a search on the system and it turns out lots of people are having problems with their system

today i got a another present from the wife….i knew she got a big bonus…but dang it….she paid too much for it going to the LHS ….anyhow…got a spektrum 2.4ghz dx3s with telemetry transiever and an extra reciever without the telemetry…..(i had bitched that 27mhz was crap)
must say that the am transmitter that came with the vorza was kinda disapointing when every other kit comes with 2.4ghz….
well i spent a couple hours installing the reciever, mostly because i wanted to get the temperature, and rpm monitor installed….
temp was easy to install…they had a loop wire, that was easy to run around the electric motor allthough it was designed for nitro…it fitted nicely
the rpm monitor however was a little tricky….it uses IR and need to see a change between bright and dark….it came with some stickers black and reflective…but none small enough to fit the 17T m1 gear….so the dremmel came out….and i polished half of the gear to a mirror surface…so the sensor could differentiate (what a word for a guy thats on hits 9th beer) ….some holes and plastic had to be messed with…but luckily the reciever box is just about perfect distance from the pinion gear….a little oring gave it the space needed….2 small drilled holes, and the sensor was in place….AND IT FUCKING WORKS !
manual says nitro only….bullshit….once calibrated it is supposed to be able to give a readout in mph or km/h (preferred by all of civilized countries of the world) …..
i had some hickups with the throttle..not sure if it is the dead space or just that i need to do a re calibration….a small test of the steering showed no problems as long as there is line of sight
the whole unit is pretty nice, and with the large grip fits nicely into my hand….pretty cool upgrade….
hmmm neighbor of mine….that used to drive just about anything on wheels (or so he said) has been looking at me driving the e-revo up and down out street (culdesack) …..anyhow…had a chat with him about motors and stuff and it sounded like he just might wanna get something and come play …..
so i need some cheap street tires for my 1:8 or MT ….the e.revo runs 3.2″ tires but it will grind the knubbies off just about anything in no time…..got some tires that went bald…if they are anything like slicks they suck too…..
so anyone know of a chinese clone/copy cheap tire/wheel combo to get so i can run on pavement…..the proline roadrage is too expensive….i just want something to tease him with so he will take the plunge and i have a buddy to race with…..
i found some that looked like michelin sport motorcycle tire….but the search was on my phone, and dang it if i didnt book mark it…so i cant find the damn tires again

OMG those proline mulchers do their job…..best set of tires i have had so far on the e-revo
but theres no denying it…the vorza is faster on my little track, but topend is slower then the e-revo….more precise….i love it….gotta get more batteries 🙂
the esc and motor is the same on both cars…but the vorza, has nice cooling fins …they work awesome, motor barely got warm…where as the e-revo was hot to the touch
the vorza does get stuck in places where the revo has ground clearance and size to just plow through/over…..
Stormerhobbies….btw has the vorza about 70 bucks cheaper than ebay, and alot of other cars/trucks cheaper than tower….well tower can be just as cheap if you have coupons and shit….fuck i hate coupons….

it was in the light controller i got off ebay….i had spare LED’s…thought why not….im trying to come up with a way to power and run two cree Q5 or simelar high output LED as front lights…..for a second i was even contemplating getting two S7 900 lumen leds…those suckers are bright…but would need to come up with a reflector, and cooling for them. but imagine…1800 lumen….
now check out these sick puppies….they are huge….they are called Mulchers….i hope they will tear the up the backyard….

btw it seems like everyone has a “friend” that fucks up your rc….
i sold my inferno to a friend….that way….you brake it you buy it….he wanted to do some speed runs….and so he did ringht into the front wheel of my scooter tat the time….broke the front bulkhead, suspension, tower, basicly everything on the left front side….told him i wanted 550$ for the truck and it was now his….bought a paintball gun….fucked up me knee…traded it for an airgun….and been airgunning ever since….and now its full circle…im back to RC
50 mph….i bet i can outrun that thing….i got torque from the get go….with some good street tires….are there any you would recommend for a buggy ?
