Q:

traxxas E-Revo 1:10 brushless

it arrived yesterday, i ordered it as soon as i had sold enough stuff…but it seems like they are in short supply most places, and where its available they want nearly 700 bucks for it….so i ended up canceling the truck at thebarnfloor.com who had it for 609….and went ebay for 660 with 8% bing cashback….making it 608 incl shipping

bought 4 packs of zippy 3S 25C 5000mah batteries and a 8 cell charger for lipo….charger can be programmed in tons of ways, and it does balance charging and all including temp probe

also ordered castle link which allows me to program the ESC, and theres a lot of stuff to change….like braking, acceleration curve, how much initial power it can draw and much more

anyhow the truck….well buggy….no truck…had it not been for the monster truck wheels i would call it a buggy with such a streamlined body and all

its all very nicely laid out…and came completely ready to run…i dropped 8AA into the transmitter, and loaded 2 lipos….and off i went driving a bit carefull….but its very hard not to try see what it can do.

before programming it….it was VERY agressive, launching wheelies as soon as you added more power, allmost hard to keep the front down….it has tons of body roll, and the gear train could sound nicer….but it all works….breakes was set at 50%, which is like a sloppy 1:8 nitro buggy brake, upped it to 75% which is enough to make a stoppie, so i lowered it to 70% which gives lots of breaking, but only does stoppies when max brakes are applied and surface allows it.

this truck should come with a center diff, why they dont dump that 25$ item in there from the start is a mystery to me….with all the wheelie power it would be nice with a centerdiff to transfer the power forward once the front lifts off

second i wish they had used bolts on some of the screws….they just thread into plastic, and is way easy to overtighten, even with great care taken…

third….i would have liked it as a kit….you learn so much from assembling it your self….not i have to guess what to take appart for access a certain part

i got center diff ordered, but it hasnt showed up yet….and i ordered a sway bar kit….this kit is a must ! it helps soooooo much

one tire has allready shredded 🙄 i hope some glue will hold it together so i can get a few more miles out of it

i put my old digital camera on it….it has a lens housing for extra lenses so i though that would protect it …and it did….but the ride was too rough i guess for it to keep recording…it kept ending up with format error….i really wish i had recorded there was some spetacular crashes 🙂

heres the little bit the camera managed to record

got a little more done tonight

4 ultra bright headlights allways on
4 ultrabright green LED 50% when stopped or slow, 100% when at speed
2 rear red brake lights, 50% when running forward 100% when braking
2 rear white 100% when reversing

to do.: indicator lights, maybe set of “fog”lights

got 4 ultra bright green leds mounted as a ground effects kit and hooked up with some the connectors synopsys sent me…..

looks pretty good i think…might have to sand the led’s a bit to disperse the light a bit more…..

its raining like crazy here…so no roadtest of how it looks….

they can be mounted as indicator lights too so the blink when turning one way or the other

still a couple of empty slots on the light controller….so more to come

get a present in the maiil today from Synopsys….10 connectors…..THANK YOU….unfortunatly the wrong size arghh….i think i can “mill” or just cut them to fit….so once again thank you i appreciate it….

it is soo cool to have lights on the truck…..cars actually see it and slow down, when im out speed testing at dark….and its much easier to figure out what the hell the truck is doing….

tomorrow i will try get the connectors to fit….im too drunk right now…more to come…..

a neighbor (live in a culdesac so theres like 8 houses i consider neighbors) came over to have a look see….i think i talked him into getting a kyosho inferno VE, or the e-revo…..be cool to have someone to drive with.

lol yeah i know im weird…..24t been replaced with 18T again….screw those high speed runs….all they bring is destruction…but it is exciting knowing the truck might just have a melt down or hit something at 60+mph which would mean total destruction

i was tempted to strap 2 extra batteries on there….for 22.2v 10A instead of the regular 22.2v 5A…..at least the motor and esc wouldnt be starving

but currently the biggest problem is to find a big enough place to really let it get to topspeed or get a radar gun….and get the tires balanced somehow….

kiddo is starting in day care YAY…maybe i should just get that membership to the local RC club….and start driving.

You don’t balance your wheels, Shame on you. 😆

i forgot to grab a picture of last nights personal speed record….so i just had to try again today

shy 10 km/h …..that can be the gps fault…it measures once a second i believe…so if the truck had topspeed 1 second less than yesterday then the gps will register a slower speed….

what i didnt see in the dark yesterday….was the tires balooning a bit, and they are not balanced….so the whole truck at topspeed was shaking

i kinda wished i had gotten a kyosho inferno VE instead…it runs a hobby king chinese brushless system (cheaper to replace when something goes wrong)

its based of the nitro buggy…its bullet proof…..

not as fast as the traxxas….but who cares….it can still hang with the 1:8 nitro buggies….if you need more….buy a kershaw design ESC and motor for 225$ and drop that in….and run 6S and it will still be about the same as the traxxas….plus tires and rims are cheaper in 1:8

what should be had first

first thing is get some screen mesh for windows….cause the esc will dirt and break down ….expensive and can be avoided ($6.75)

anti roll bar kit….an absolute must ! (think it was 15 bucks on ebay)

set of beadlocks wheels….i run cheap maximizer ½” offset green wheels they are 15 bucks for a set, you need two sets…..guy at hobby store praised them highly (i bought them online they ship fast and cheap)…½” will give you a wider truck…good for balance

rubber….i dont know where you drive….but proline mulchers are good….the holeshot or bowtie will wear down really fast on firm dirt or pavement….the beadlocks are 3.2″ so tires are a tad smaller than the 3.8″ stock ones….dont worry about it !

get spare rod ends…those black plastic things with a ball in them. ($5)

i would say get steel axles…cause the original ones will wear out its…but i dont know if the steel ones are any better and they are expensive !

get either 2 complete plastic axles in plastic(12$ for one), or the least bag of half shafts (two in a bag and those are the part of the axle that break, also 12$ but will fix two axles)

shock rebuild kit….if a shock decides to eat an oring or so, this will fix it…5 bucks

do NOT buy the integy piggy back shocks ….they look nice…but are crap

castle creations usb programming kit….it is really cool to be able to program your car to your liking

CC fanshroud for the motor

more complete wheels….for different situations…..

3S is normal rc car fast ……4S it gets really fun…..6S the car goes ballistic !

3S is a little to little when jumping the truck and you try to level it mid flight by accelerating mid air….but otherwise fun

buy batteries in hongkong…like hobby king….get two cheap turniqy chargers…and buy at least 4 batteries….you decided if 2x2S(4s) or 2x3S(6s) i wish i had gotten some 2S batteries….3S is a bit too slow….4S would be perfect for backyard bashing…..6S when you wanna chase cars on the highway 😈

with time you might wanna gear the truck…but honestly i have gotten so scared of it that this speedrun today is probably the only time im gonna run the 24T pinion, just not worth the risk when the motor allready have been warrantied once…not sure its gonna be free next time !

rating 7 out of 10, it gets high mark for the castle creations mamba system which is awesome when it works …. build quality is ok…..runtime between 20 minutes when you go really nuts with optional but included gear …..30-40 minutes bashing with stock gearing, still very fast !

i run zippy 5000mah 25C batteries, and they have been pretty ok…would probably buy turniqy instead next time…the zippy doesnt hold balance real well….they did when new but now with 50 charges they dont stay as equal as they used to when i pull them out of the car

would i buy again….probably not….why….i dont know lately stuff has been braking on every single drive…..simple stuff, not expensive stuff but its like the car was never built for brushless power….they should had taken their nitro truck and convertet that

if my eotech sells..then im looking at a kyosho inferno VE based of the kyosho nitro inferno, but with brushless system….not as fast, but if its based off the nitro buggies so it will be bullet proof

also there is the savage flux which has the mamba system it(called something else but it is the mamba monster)

people seem to run the e-revo like an onroad racer and try to go all out for speed….i got the fanshroud for the motor and a 24T pinion gear….which theorectically should add 25%…and it wasnt far off gps said 65.8 mph (106kmh) , probably could have gone a tad faster if i had room…its nuts seing a small model like that acelerate pretty fast and hit that kind of speeds…it will surprice you how much room you need to brake as well…..im done trying to get it faster….im gonna gear down, spare the motor and esc the stress…mount some more lights 😉

Hey Cygnus,
How much time do you get off a battery? I haven’t been able to find that info anywhere. What would you rate this car 1-10? If purchased what should be bought immediately with it (ie) upgrades, spare parts?

Thanks ,much appreciated!

top flashing thingy was a blinking doggie thing with a motion sensor and light sensor…it never worked on the dog for walking him as his fur would cover the light sensor and it would just be blinking all the time…..but it works fine on the truck 🙂

i got nightrider 6 led effect being made by a buddy who’s into electronics

i also wanna mount a couple of R2 or Q5 3W leds…but for that i have to machine a new bumper, with heatsink and reflectors…but that would be really cool i think….would need to clear plastic to keep mud and crud out of the LED, cause right now everytime it takes a nose dive it scoops dirt right into the bumper and covers the led’s

theres room for 2 9v batteries next to the servos….not quite sure how im gonna do it…but i think they should have enough power to run all the lights

Your going to need more flashing LED’s on top to get that night rider/cylon effect..

little video of the new light setup

ohhh also got the steering sorted out….it has dual servos and they seem to be fighting each other….turns out that traxxas doesnt pay much attention when they assemble and mount them

and lights on the truck looks like this
they are both the same brightness no clue why one seems more brighter than the other

brakelights are on 50% while driving, when breaking it goes to 100%

prestty easy to see and steer the car in the dark now…..its feeding power from the ESC at 6V, but it doesnt seem like theres much power to take, the powerfull 3w R5 led doesnt work, well it does but no better than el cheapo led …1w lumiled is not much better

and now for the more electrical inclined…i got some ultra bright red, orange, green, white….only the white (18K mcd) can i run 2 of pr connector, the others are really dim if paired up, but pretty bright when alone….they should all be the same….maybe i should just run it all of a 9v battery

long way i dunno….i just mess around with it really….hoping to sell my eotech so i can get a kyosho inferno VE in the near future

with all these brakedowns lately, i got a feeling that the e-revo was never meant for a powerfull system like the mamba monster….

first the motor and esc go up in smoke….4 weeks wait (it was awefull) then i get it back, and on the first drive the one endrod plastic thing breaks….then another, then the axles come apart ripped to threads….i think they should have stuffed the MMM into their nitro truck instead of their e-revo…the nitro looks much sturdier

well yesterday i had it hooked up to my pc, the ESC was running version 1 in the firmware….with very few options so that got upgraded to 1.22 with twice the options…nice….lots of people have seen their ESC and motor blow up from using the punch control, so i left that at 100% but they say to lower the timing of the motor instead…so that is now set as low as it goes..it says that will give lower temps, and longer runtimes…fine with me 6S is still very powerfull

the postlady came with new steel CV axles, long cups, and some spares from traxxas….so now i got some spare axles, and im back to 4WD again

one thing i find weird is that they grease the joints and put a “sock” over them as you can see in the pictures above….BUT i remember my kyosho, burns, turboburns, and inferno mk1 it said in the manual to NOT grease joints as grit will come in there, making the grease a grinding paste…hmmm we will see

very happy how the ESC grille turned out
before lots of bigger stuff could get into the fan and disable it

now only small stuff can get in there

working on making a cooler…..got a piece of roundstock bored out…now i gotta mill it….at some point, make it kinda square, and then i will attach a cpu heatsink….but that is in the future
