Q:

EDgun Matador is the #1 PCP in the world…

EDIT: This was not a gun problem after all… It was a problem with my adjustable magnification scopes… All 3 scope (Leapers 8-32X56, Nikko Stirling Diamond 10-50X60, and Leapers 4-12X40) were losing their zero and shifting the Point Of Impact every time I moved the magnification adjustment wheel from the lowest setting to the highest setting and back again to the lowest setting…

Eduard, here are some 65yd groups I shot this morning…. It seems that
sometimes it is a laser shooting 3-5 shots on top of each other and then shots
start to fly everywhere… I cleaned the barrel very carefully and shot some 100
shots before shooting these groups… The wind was absolutely zero… My
Combro is on the blink so I could not get any FPS information…. This gun has
well over 10,000 rounds through it. It does not make a difference what
the psi is in the gun and I removed the shroud/mod to make sure it was not
causing any problems. (See group on bottom left that says “No mod”)
I also pulled out my Rapid to make sure that it was not the conditions.. The
Rapid shot a 10 shot sub 1″ group at 80yds. The EDgun shot 2 sub 3″
groups so I know it was not the wind nor the shooter causing the wild
flyers…. I ordered a new Chrony this morning so I should have FPS info
next week….

Well, I always tell to my clients — do not buy cheap scopes 🙂 I am glad you have found the reason but I think the result could be better then you’ve shown at the last picture.

Ed

Well F’ me running and kiss my uncle in the country…. Man am I
aggravated….

So I start shooting again this morning with the new LED lights on my
chrony to see how they work… Well they work great and give me very
consistent #’s with out any errors or screwy readings….
2 X 32 shot strings…
Low 869.4…………………..Low 874.1
High 882.9………………….High 890.4
Average 877.4…………….Average 879.3
Extreme Spread 13.51…..Extreme Spread 16.27
Standard Deviation 2.82.. Standard Deviation 2.82

Ok now to the aggravating part….. I am shooting on X10 magnification. I
finally noticed that when I increased the magnification on the scope to
see the groups and then go back to X10 mag the F’ing POI changes. So I
shot a group turning the magnification from X10 to X50 and then Back to
X10 after every shot… Well needless to say the friggin POI went all over
the place…. I did this with both the Nikko and the Leaper…. It is clear
that the adjustable magnification on my scopes are the cause of all of
this crap…..
You would think I would have noticed it before but, like I have said in the
past, I am not very smart… It takes a lot of experience before I start to
understand….Hopefully I have saved some one from wasting their time
and effort trying to figure out what is causing a shift in POI. I apologize
for running you guys through the emotional ringer and I apologize to Ed
for ever questioning his work. EDgun absolutely makes the best PCP’s in
the world. I also thank each and every one of you for your input and
support in getting this problem figured out…

Here is the target I shot while doing the magnification
adjustment testing… It is quite obvious…

Could you tell me the starting pressure, the finish pressure, the speed and weight of pellets, and the number of shots. From what I’ve seen there is an idea of overconsumption of the air.

Ed

Here are the numbers today Ed… You will see the solution in the next
post.. I am so angry that I did not see the problem before… This gun is
still the best in the world… #1…. I will change the title of this post
because the gun is not a problem…..

Low 869.4

Did you run a Qtip in the muzzle to detect any burrs?

Yep.. that is a great way to check for a messed up crown….

I resisted getting the IR lamps but now that I have them I actually use my Chrony and it is enjoyable to boot… 😆

I got the printer as well. I too have a hard time spending on the extras but after I do I rarely regret it. 😉

What I eventually noticed is that if I don’t get the right stuff the first time I end up with two of certain things.

I bought a RCBS digital scale for reloading because I didn’t want to drop $300 for a electronic powder dispenser… So now I have a powder charge thrower (which is about as accurate as a snow shovel to dispense powder), digital scale AND an electronic powder dispenser…

I paid $120 for the scale and the same for the thrower. Then got the automatic one to replace the two items. 😈

Should have just got the right tool the first time and saved myself lots of trouble.

Well it is good to know that it is not just me that does that…. I have
bought 4 chronies now and looking back I could have bought the most
expensive one they make … BUT NOOOOO.. I had to go cheap 4 friggin
times…. O’ well…. I think the lights are next….

I’d try to replace the spring that controls the power setting… That jump from below the target to above is just too strange. If you weren’t on your third scope i’d have to say scope…

Did you happen to Chrony that last target run? It would be interesting to see the velocity for the jumping poi target.

I can’t get my Chrony to work for shit without the IR lamps on the screens indoors and out.

Sun came up high enough and the chrony started to read right. The
strings are really consistent so I am ruling out the hammer spring…

I tried to chrony all shots and compare them to the targets but the
lighting was evidentially not right at that time and I got a bunch of errors and some
really wacky readings…. I wanted to see the FPS on those shots too… I
just might have to get a set of lamps… AARRGHH… If it is not one thing
it is another…

Eh Mam,

Sorry man, disreguard my suggestion of recrowning the barrel. Forgot
that the crown is threaded. 😳

Mark

That is what I told from the beginning, be sure that that crown is normal.

Ed

Yes the crown is normal by the eye and magnifying glass… But I will pay
you for a new one Ed to replace this one…

Here is more testing… I do not know what has changed but maybe the
polishing of the inside the barrel and lubing pellets. Lubing pellets
seemed to tighten the groups more… The FPS is running great now with
or without the SCBA tank…. The groups could be tighter but I have run
out of ideas…. There is a slight breeze blowing so maybe that accounts
for the size of the groups or as Mrs. Lama says, My shooting
sucks…

With SCBA tank connected @ 2,900psi
32 shots
Low 882.1
High 893.6
Average 887.7
Extreme Spread 11.53
Standard Deviation 2.82

Without the SCBA tank connected
25 shots
Low 873
High 887.4
Average 880.5
Extreme Spread 14.28
Standard Deviation 3.74

Here are the groups that were shot over the chrony…. Target 1,2 & 3 were shot with the gun connected to the SCBA tank and pellets that were not lubed. Targets 4,5,6 & 7 were shot with the gun connected to the SCBA tank and pellets lubed with BreakFree. Targets 8,9, and the sighting target were shot with the gun disconnected from the SCBA tank and the pellets lubed with BreakFree….

I’d try to replace the spring that controls the power setting… That jump from below the target to above is just too strange. If you weren’t on your third scope i’d have to say scope…

With the bore polished and tight spots removed I began more testing.
There is either something really wrong with my gun or my BRAND NEW
chrony is not working right… DO YOU THINK that the bore is to much
high above the chrony?. The FPS was reading from 925 down to
825 but as you can see on the targets, the POI was not changing to
match the FPS deviation…

Hey SteveinLA, that board out there leaning against the tree is
11.5yds.. I think I might have shot my automatic watering bottle. Awe
crap…lol
Yes I friggin did… Dang it…. The Gamo Express packs a little
power…lol

JUST to please Mrs. Lama, I screwed (attached) my gun and chrony to
a 2X4 (a wood board) to remove the mistakes of the shooter…. The gun
and the chrony CAN NOT move…
Here is that set up

This target was shot from 3,000psi down to 2,100psi. The first
group looked like the gun was shooting great but, Notice all other groups are
quite large.

This target was shot with the gun hooked up to an SCBA tank
with 2,090psi on the tank gauge and the gun gauge is showing
190bar. These groups are considerably smaller and more consistent…
Look at the last target on bottom right. That was shot with the moderator
removed… The point of impact shifted up?

Just for the record. I polished the bore again and got out most of the tight
spots in the bore… The only tight spots are at the breech end and the choke
at the muzzle end… More testing tomorrow.
