My Edgun R3 is finally here!
Edgun R3 .25 Long serial #0249 finally arrives after a long but very worthwhile wait.
Tony did a great job packing. The rifle was double boxed along with thick protective foam wrapped around each end and popcorn to fill any additional gaps.
This shipment has the new stainless steel bolt and a new breech. Internally it also has a new and more efficient valve.
The trigger doesn’t look like it has changed.
She will be getting a new scope soon but for now is wearing the Mueller 4.5-14×40 Tactical scope http://muelleroptics.com/mt451440

Dvdrw, I had to adjust the reg on both of my 25 cal long Matadors and I will see Sunday if my new R3 25 standard needs tuned.
Once I got my 25 Matadors set to shoot the JSB 25.4 grain pellets at 885, I never noticed that the speed moved after 1500-2000 shots. While tuning my Matadors, I redo the in lead and crown and then polish both. After doing that, I push 10 patches that are loaded with JB bore paste thru the barrel, clean it and then push a lot of patches that are loaded with Mothers polishing paste through the barrel.
Using the JB bore paste and then polishing the barrel could be the reason that my fps doesn’t raise after 1500-2000 shots as the barrel is already broken in (smoothed) after the polishing.

Give it some time to settle.

Can someone confirm that? How did you readjust the speed? Just from HST? After you readjust it, did the speed shifted again later? This is strange info.
Varminter, use a little of the silicon divers grease on the O rings.
I plan on putting a scope on my new R3 25 standard and spend all day Sunday shooting and tuning it. I have had it since Wednesday and I have just shot it one shot, just to see if it would shoot! Usually when I get a new Matador in, I take the day off from work and play with it all day. I have been spending way too much time at work

Maybe I should have waited but yesterday’s shot string was bothering me and oldgoat’s quick and dirty video got me all excited to take the plunge into her. 😆
I also love to tinker with my toys and was itching to learn how to work on her. I’m actually glad I did because there was a lot of metal shavings or maybe pellet debris and shavings that I cleaned out. I even found some stuck to my valve probe inside the regulator/valve housing. Maybe this is why things were so erratic with the shots in the mid 900’s then down to high 800’s on another fill then back in the 900’s again today. Things are never as clean as I’d like inside from the factory and I always try to get the bad stuff out during the break in period.
1. copper o-ring, lube: none
2. how much to turn in the regulator: start with the HST… see how high you can go adjusting HST only. If you max out just below 900 then your fine… if you max out above that you might want to turn the reg in a little.
baby steps… go little by little (1hr at a time) and remember – if you turn your reg in it will not be enough to just fill it up and shoot 5 pellets.
Changes are not immediate – it will take a number of shots before the reg settles… you might have 12 shots showing 840fps and suddenly it goes to 855, 867, 890 and settles.
but again, you rifle has not yet settled and whatever you leave it at now will change over time… why not just throw 3-4 tins of .25’s through it and start tuning after that?

Based on my numbers and the huge hump at the end of my shot string, how much should I turn my regulator in to start? Any silicone needed on the cooper O ring?

I noticed that the o-ring has been replaced with a brass ring in my new R3. Anybody else have the same setup?

Regarding dry-firing, I dont know about that… I dont see any risks with it as its something that easily can happen and quite often too.
Many times have I cocked the rifle and for some reason forgot to put a pellet in there.
Without air, sure – no dry-firing as it could damage the brass thingy… same as dry-firing with the entire trigger/hammer house off the rifle… big no-no, will mess up the spring piston.
Ohh… you just received it, right?
Please dont start tuning it until you have shot at least 1,500 pellets…

What kind of lube do you guys recommend I use inside the Edgun regulator? I decided to clean all the regulator washers and the housing it goes into because it looked like it was a little dirty. I have diver’s silicone lube and I also have Super Lube synthetic grease with syncolon (PTFE) or do I need an airtool type oil like the kind used in paintball guns? I’m assuming the o-rings get the silicone lube. I thought I’d also let you know that my regulator had no markings at all to show what the original setting was set at. I also thought I’d show you that the new adjustment screw for the reg is now an allen head

I use a 4×4 block of wood. Stand gun up with hammer on edge of block and press down on front of air tube with a tiny bit of body weight. Much easier to degas this way. The first degas release will stand you back up ,just reapply enough pressure to pop valve. Ive done it this way several dozen times.

This is what you have to do when you’re desperate to tune your .25 Edgun but you don’t want to have any neighbors hear you. I have my law mower running while I shoot and adjust HST a little at a time.
I may not be done but I sure am a lot happier than when I first shot her through the chrono on Friday. I watched oldgoat’s video (you are the man!) and took everything apart. I doubt I got it as good as it can be on this first try but I think I’m close. oldgoat, I would appreciate your advice on what you think of this shot string and if I should do a little more tuning.
I turned the regulator from factory setting, lets call it twelve o’clock, and turned it in half a turn to 6 o’clock. I then turned my HST out two full turns and shot. 830 833. I turned it in 1/4 turn in and shot 855 857. I turned HST in another quarter turn and shot 874 878 878 880. Without refilling, and I had started at 190 bar at the beginning of all this, I turned HST in another 1/8 turn and here is the string I got. Unfortunately I did not check what my air pressure was before this long string. I also have not checked if I am at my peak with this HST setting in relation to where the regulator is currently set. How much better can it get with a little more fine tuning? I used to have a program that would chart this on a graph but I’m still looking for it.

From here I shot a few more times without filling but the rest of the shots you’ll see just get lower and lower.

This is where I stopped and when I checked air pressure my Edgun gauge just showed around 100 bar. Remember that I started at 190 bar but I also shot 8 shots while adjusting HST before the long shot string.
This is so much better than the original shot string I posted earlier in this thread and the huge spike at the end is gone! Thank you Tedd (oldgoat)!! Without your tuning advice I would have just assumed that my new .25 R3 Edgun Long just doesn’t perform as well as my old .22 Edgun but after a just a few adjustments it is already better than my .22 Matador ever was. I also never tuned my .22 but it just came shooting great out of the box. Thanks again Tedd! I am so happy 🙂
