Q:

Ranger 45

Well I have a tracking number for the Ranger 45 that was assembled, test fired, chronyed, and shipped today.

28 inch barrel, standard stock and black crerakote finish, $1230 dollars including shipping.

To early to get the arrival date, it is not in the system yet.

Chrony numbers were:

Round ball. low setting 3000 PSI……1018 FPS
225………. low setting 3000 PSI……..877 FPS
405 shot 1 hi setting 4500 PSI………804 FPS
340 shot 2 hi setting 4500 PSI………843 FPS
These numbers will improve by 30 to 50 FPS as the rifle breaks in.

I was thinking people were wanting to shoot gas check designs with the gas check on them. I don’t see why anyone would……..

DanH, EPP/UG’s are cheaper than most roundball you will find, are usually more accurate, and IMO are better game killers than roundball.

Here is a picture of the EPP/UG design RC was shooting, next to a .457RB, and a 43grain .25 EJ. My favorite super-lightweight .45slug. These were cast using BHN9 lead.

sounds good where do you buy these ?

here is a few pics of my stock finished coated , i just have to epoxy clear coat sand with 1500 wet dry then do a final polish and it is done .

Right Marvin. Nobody ever found the pb casting links before you filled us poor souls in, and you discovered the brinell hardness measure. You’re the one who thinks too highly of himself and fortunately you have no acomplishment or failure to blemish the impression.

Jerry the truth is the truth and you know it . I do not profess to know more than you or any one else . But the facts that I have give for others to read and make up their own minds about are true facts that if one reads with a open mind can learn and better themselves . If you do not like dealing with the public is sales then don’t . Sales hype is just that . Sales is sales . Truth is truth . Write a book and put it up for sale if you are really that good .And help the rest of us poor Air gunners . You think to highly of your self Jerry . Good night .Marvin

Marvin,

Stop acting like a savior for the BB crowd. Your insuiations against anyone with a profit motive are just plain offensive at this point. Not everyone trying to profit from their work is a lying (hyping) crook. In fact, the guys with customers, like RV, Seth and myself (although Timmy is the only one making money…) are the only ones being held accountable for what we say and deliver. Yeah, you can piss and moan about bhn and any other factor you want but you never have to satisfy anyone do you? The fact is, the guys saying what works best and selling bullets have to deal with the fact that anyone they BS’d will show up here and tell the world that the guy that sold them $20 worth of slugs is full of shit.

You, on the other hand, can grab a bunch of range lead and tell us all that we’re full of it because you just discovered a gun that goes past 850 fps (lol)! You don’t put your name on the line over and over with thousands of slugs going to shooters of every level of skill. You don’t have to worry about remembering a library of guns and what size slugs they generally like. You don’t have to worry about every casting session yielding customer quality slugs. No, you get to post over and over again links that don’t even make your point and dress yourself up as some kind of sage. What crap!

Here’s the deal Marvin, put your money and your reputation where your big internet educated mouth is! Cast up a bunch of bhn 22 slugs for a guy that doesn’t even know his barrel bore and give him the impression that you stand behind the product. Take a chance that you might just fuck up the bhn and sizing for a customer that will get crap results and also turn out to be the one guy that posts his groups! You’ve been so willing to tell us all about how we need to adapt to changing times and velocities but you’ve been totally unaware or ignored that we have not yet gone anywhere new! Scroll up this post and look at the highest velocities mentioned. Nothing bad there at all… Nothing freaking new either! All you have to do is look at another site and you’ll see 230gr slugs going 950 and if that doesn’t wake you up, just ask; there’s plenty of eveidence regarding fast slugs/pellets. Your experience is even more limited than the rest of ours but you dress yours up in some white robes and patina of discovery.

The fact is: you’ve presented nothing new, you’ve serviced nothing new, you’ve taken NO personal risk based on your pronouncements.

Seriously, you have time to shoot a zillion rounds across a chrony but never a minute for a group (except the ONE)?

You tell everyone who will listen about bhn 8-99 but you have one group posted (nothing special) and you have NO dog in the fight! That’s right, you can be full of shit and nobody here will be posting about how you “stole” their money on big promises. You can sit back and come up with BS about all of us rip-off artists and know nothings missing the hard lead (oh excuse me bhn 14+) parade but you have NOTHING on the line. You don’t have to work with a customer who mis-guessed their bore size. You don’t have to get smart on any gun you don’t own and work with customers on tuning for 25 vs. 88gr slugs. You don’t have to worry about the worst slug you ever sold being photographed and displayed at 100 times actual size… NO, you’re a freaking non-profit prophet!

Horse shit!

You’re not better than us because you don’t sell your slugs, you’re a self appointed saint who’s made sure he can never be proven wrong. Well, here’s the deal Marvin, this country was built on the backs of guys that made a product, sold it if they could, folded if it was shit, tried again, and if it proved worthwhile made some coin and hired folks who didn’t have work already…. The guys with all the theory like you…well I guess they figured the tooth fairy was real and nolbody would ever ask to put up or shut up.

So Marvin, I just told Gary Barnes about a design that I though was crap and he is moving on to the next design (maybe he’ll finally have one that works? :)) Do you have the balls to send me your portfolio for test? You want to send me lots of 100 or even 50 slugs all in a nice tight bhn range and weight range? Are you ready to put anything but your opinion on the line? Don’t think I’ll give you a fair shake? Find someone who thinks I wasn’t fair to them.

Really, I appreciate the desire to learn and explore, but when several guys with actual reputations on the line tell you that you’re plowing the same plot…. yeah, we’re all capitalist pigs and you should mention “hype” and reference sales as we could all make at least $50 this year if you didn’t save people…

PB

I just did yesterday, it was a 300 grn Oregon Trail. Nothing spectacular, 3 inches at 50 yards 800 FPS. Nothing I would buy 500 of, but in a pinch it would work in the brush out to 75 yards.

I found a bullet today I really like the looks of but it is expensive as hell, it is a 395 grain LBT with the dubious gas check, so I think I will just wait until my mold gets done and spend my money on that. I may have a mold made for that little bullet I shot today, it is always better for me to run two molds when I cast.

I ordered my mold to cast 452 with pure lead, and shooting 454 today has shown me if I am a little over it will not be a big deal, so I am not too concerned about sizing.

I never sized my BP bullets, and just pan lubed them with SPG and my homemade BP lube before that, put them in the freezer in a cake and then pushed them out with my thumbs. It was not that I did not have a sizer, I had two lubesizers and just about every sizer die known to man kind, many of which I had two of plus I had the lee sizer dies for a loading press. It was better for sizing in my opinion but you had to lube in a seperate operation.

Those bullets have had a good track record with PB and AR both . The makers of all most ever US made BB says they have had good to the best in accuracy with using P.B bullets casted with bhn bullets that range from 8-22 . But the AR casters say you need special molds and secret lead or pure lead . Or it just will not work . But yet none of them want to help the AR community and tell us about it . They just want to sell it to us . But I am not sure of what they are selling . At this point . So being the crazy old man I am that has a pink AR . That digs in the dirt for his lead . I am going to use what works for me and for many other shooters that shoot PB and AR . Just to much hype IMO .Marvin

RC,
Forgive me if I have extended any mis-understanding beyond the source. The posts above made me think that folks thought that a gas check design meant that someone would actually press that bit of copper on before using the slug in an airgun. That, would be absurd given any experience with airgun slugs but that absurdity is not to be discounted, given some of the BS I’ve read here abouts…

Also, the idea that the base design influences velocity is a popular misperception associated with inattention during physics classes.

It is now clear to me that you realize that regardless of base shape, there is no earthly reason to buy or install a gas check on an airgun slug regardless of the mold it dropped from.

BTW, I had no intent to minimize the casting experience you suffered over the years. Getting 1/3 of your molds to work is at least average and probably better. I’m lucky, of the 30+ molds in the tool (mold) box right now, most of them have been proven before I had to pay…

I was thinking people were wanting to shoot gas check designs with the gas check on them. I don’t see why anyone would……..

IT’s down for me too RC

i was wondering if any of you guys have tried a 200 grain truncated cone bullet like for a 45 ACP, i believe they drop at .454 or so out of my moulds, i can’t find one right now that has not been sized , i wonder if they would shoot.

PB,

Yes I do, I just took it for you, but Photobucket is down for maintainence.

RC

i was asking what bullet you shot the last groups with . do you have a pic of it.

Jerry,

Perhaps you misread my post, or misunderstood it.

I don’t like gas checks, I find them a pain in the ass.

But then if I wanted that kind of velocity in a rifle, which is where I always thought they had utility, I would rather shoot a jacketed bullet.

One of the molds that never worked for me was a 220 grain NEI round nose 30 caliber mold I orginally got for a Krag, it had a gascheck, I never got any accuracy out of that mold, but I never got a 30 caliber to shoot with cast bullets well. I only had two molds tho, for 30, the other was a spitzer and it was pathetic. I had a 44 320 grain mold that was gas checked, but it worked well without them.

I never thought I would get back into casting again, but truethfully I just like to pour lead and make bullets, and although I can certainly afford to buy the bullets, I like the independence that making my own projectiles gives me.

Hopefully I will not have to buy too many molds to get what I want, which is a good heavy bullet with a flat nose that shoots minute of elk lung at 100 yards. That means a 4 inch group for me.

I want penetration, with a 45 caliber bullet sporting a flat point I see no reason for expansion and only find that impairs the penetration I am after.

I don’t shoot game animals in the head or the neck unless it is a finishing shot, I shoot them in the chest and if I have to do a quartering shot to get to those lungs thru part of the paunch I sure will.

If it is facing away from me I want a bullet heavy enough to break the pelvis, at which time I will take a second shot and head shoot it as it drags itself away.

I know that may sound gruesome, but so does my stomach when it is empty and wanting elk meat.

Roachcreek

RC,

If you’re feeling better after the dance, go and read my post re. gas checks again. No reason you would ever go and pay for a bunch of copper boots for airgun slugs. Unless you really are after 177 moa…

Ummm ok.

So where is a pic of the bullet you shot the killer group with RC. 😆

Jerry,

If your feeling all better now, could you cast me up some gas checked 75 grain 177 MOA slugs for my Crosman Mrod? 😆 😛

I had 33 bullet molds, because 2/3rds of them were not worth a shit for what I bought them for. That hurts for a hobbist @ about 70 bucks, I can imagine the pain and work for a production caster.

I bought a 50 piece bag of 300 grain Oregon trail bullets this weekend, I drove 60 miles to do it, weel I was on my way to dancing with the wifey so it worked better, I could have ordered a 250 ct box form the company for just a little more, but I know how cast bullets work and don’t work in different applications.

Roachcreek
