Q:

Ranger 45

Well I have a tracking number for the Ranger 45 that was assembled, test fired, chronyed, and shipped today.

28 inch barrel, standard stock and black crerakote finish, $1230 dollars including shipping.

To early to get the arrival date, it is not in the system yet.

Chrony numbers were:

Round ball. low setting 3000 PSI……1018 FPS
225………. low setting 3000 PSI……..877 FPS
405 shot 1 hi setting 4500 PSI………804 FPS
340 shot 2 hi setting 4500 PSI………843 FPS
These numbers will improve by 30 to 50 FPS as the rifle breaks in.

Well,

I went straight for it, I filled to 4400, used 385 HP which I believe to be Mr Hollowpoint bullets. I shot two, 2 shot groups at 50yards while sighting it in for 50 yards and then moved the target to 75 yards and shot another two shot group.

I had the rifle crosswise on the Cladwell range bag to gain elevation above the chrony, I am shooting from my hood and the blast blows the chrony off the hood. I ended up putting a box of bullets insde the chrony to weigh it down.

Granted not much can be deduced with two shot groups, but like a double rifle two shots are what your stuck with, and with a hunting rifle that is usually about all you get for shots.

I did find tho that three shots at 4400PSI getting an error on the 1st shot that said 1213 FPS that I know is not right, but the 2nd and third shots were 896 and 847, so three shots with 385 gr HP are still viable in the hunting fields.

I did not buy the rifle to be a benchrest gun, I bought it as a hunting rifle, so these groups are satisfactory for me and the 600 FPE at 50 yards will make up for these mediocre groups. 😎

I take it that was shooting at high power? Already tinkering-out 689fpe within 24hours of receiving the rifle……..that is very impressive.

Of course, those numbers aren’t really official until you move the chrony ten feet from the muzzle. I sure hope that is accurate though.

Dan,

Yeah I have to say that inletting scares me, completely outside my comfort zone.

More power to you if you can get it done tho.

Sweet!

Did it come as a chunk or was it pre-shaped? Looks a lot like my XR100 stock…

How are you going to do the inletting?

Sweet!!!

Wow, that is some serious power and accuracy for a freaking airgun! 😯

Blows the chrony off the hood. 😆 At least you didn’t shoot it!! You’d be picking up pieces for well over a quarter mile! 😆

Seeing the quality of the stocks for these BB (big bore) rifles makes me want to start making a few here and there… 😕 I did a target stock of a Mosin Nagant 91/30 that came out very sweet and I didn’t even have my mill.

Don’t you have a shoebox?

this is the stock i am doing for my ranger , tigerwood laminate , here is the photo bucket link

Roachcreek now your shoot-in ! 2 of those big bullets in the side of the elk , and back strap ! here we come ! looking at the second and third shot , i bet that gun will get ya on a 1st shot 4500 psi around 950-975 😆 after it is broke in , you have to be happy on those numbers, nice gun bud ! 😆

man you are really making me itch to get mine now ! dam you ! HA !
HA !

on that note i am going to shoot the 22 sumatra thank-you very much !

Yes I have a Shoebox, I also have a booster but can only use it in the shop so far.

Sure can not complain about that . But you should try and get that chrony about 10 feet away . And those errors should go away . It looks like once you get use to the rifle those one hole stores will be reality for you .Marvin

here is a video from Robert mrhollowpoint shooting the gun with 230 grain -36inch barrel- 4000 psi- 1120 fps- low power

on mid power from what Dan told you can shoot over 1200 fps ,230-250g , amazing ! for and airgun !

this is the older ranger video he did on high power 385 grain- 30inch barrel , the gun shoots faster than this video now about 50-fps due to the new valve spring .

And remember dialing one of these in is really no different that finding the right load for a P.B . It takes time , lead and air . And you really have 3 rifles in one with the adjustable cocking length . If you are going to multi purpose this rifle .Marvin

The weight of your bullet is border line on low power for best results in count and spread . That weight would work well on medium power and should be a fast one on high power . The rifle is chambered for .452 not .454 . Stay with the .452 unless it is a round ball .Marvin

i would start out at 4000 psi , using the same grain bullet, write down the fps per shot till it drops to low , then come back, and go 4500 psi repeat the same process ,

the more air you have in that gun the closer the shots will be in fps, i would think using the 200 plus grain stuff .

if you get some lighter….. 454 ..140g… round ball that will work better with low pressure shooting.

Sounds like the accuracy is there.

I suggest trying higher fill pressures 100psi at a time to get those first two shots close together in velocity. Keep filling higher until the first shot is just a tad lower in velocity than the second. Hopefully the third shot will be right in there with the first.
Not sure if that method will work with the Ranger using low power, because this method depends on playing with the very edge of valve lock. The Ranger’s valve may not lock on low pressure. Should work on high power, though.

IMO going to a lighter boolit for the second shot is un-acceptable…..ESPECIALLY on low power. I would expect three shots within a tight FPS variance on low power with the correct fill pressure/hammerspring.

All this initial fill pressure testing with different weight slugs is time/air/lead consuming. That’s why writing stuff down to prevent a lot of un-necessary shooting in the future is so important.

Noid,

I will try to accomodate you with those photo’s.

Yes, although I prefer them slim, Christy Alley would be a handsome woman at any weight, it is just I would not want to carry her on my back all day elk hunting. 😆

Interesting thing with this gun and the 229 grn HP’s. I was shooting from a forearm supported position, on the back rest of my back seat, this morning, not the best shooting postiton, but I could definately see as velocity decays, the POI drops.

Which we all know happens with PCP’s as velocity decays POI does indeed drop, it is just that with this gun that is two shots with a 3000PSI fill.

I sighted the gun in with the 2×7 Burris Fullfield this morning, I could not bring myself to have a 7X21 on a big game rifle. At 30 yards shooting from the back seat thru my open hatch on the Ford Exploder, to see if the noise was less inside the house above me, than shooting from the outside. So like I said it was not the the best of conditions.

I shot two two shot groups, the first shots of each fill were inside of .42, the second shots of each fill were into .17 and all four were iside of 1 inch. Tethered this thing would be virtual 1 holer.

I have read in accounts of those of you who play with these big bores, of how you shoot a second bullet of lesser weight, Dan Mcvey did this in testing my rifle before shipping it, I am seeing the importance of that.

Now a note about air usage, and the need for Shoeboxes, Boosters and extra tanks. I have shot this gun 15 times now, my 44 CUFT tank started off at 3600 PSI, it is now at 3000PSI. So you can see the need for the above mention implements.

might be time to boost the pressure up ! 4000-4500 low power now that you have it sighted in , you will get more shots per fill that way, and more fps on the first few shots , sounds like the gun is up to what you thought it would be , and wanted.

the big bores are AIR-HOGS , that is why i abtained all the cylinders i have , i was shooting the mk300 last night it gets around 90-100 shots shooting low power 14.3 cp on a fill ! HA ! HA ! man i wish the bigger guns would get that , maybe teathered up to the 500 cf dot cylinder HA ! HA !
