Ranger 45
Well I have a tracking number for the Ranger 45 that was assembled, test fired, chronyed, and shipped today.
28 inch barrel, standard stock and black crerakote finish, $1230 dollars including shipping.
To early to get the arrival date, it is not in the system yet.
Chrony numbers were:
Round ball. low setting 3000 PSI……1018 FPS
225………. low setting 3000 PSI……..877 FPS
405 shot 1 hi setting 4500 PSI………804 FPS
340 shot 2 hi setting 4500 PSI………843 FPS
These numbers will improve by 30 to 50 FPS as the rifle breaks in.

Personally I think Christy Alley is sexy and so is your new big bore.
I’m really rooting for this gun to be as accurate as it is powerful cause I have a real hankering for one.

I have been looking at the stock this morning, I can take a lot of weight off the rifle I think. I might be recontouring the stock, I think there is enough wood in the butstock to make a cheekpiece and perhaps slim the pistol grip and forearm down also.
In its Christy Alley form it reminds me of a Mrod stock in that you can take a lot of wood off, but unlike the but ugly Mrod stock, it is tastefully styled in a classic form so you can still have something beautiful when your finished.
Although it is not a select piece of wood, it does have very attractive grain, it is shiny, so when I am done with it, I will apply an oil finish.
But that will wait for a while. The major part has been accomplished, I have pried it out of UPS claws.

The workmanship on the metal on this rifle, which is apparently the 12th one made, is flawless, whether the paint covers up imperfections or the machining is just that good, you do not see any machine marks.
The trigger is very robust and rugged, the infamous screws are concave, if that is the correct word, they are bigger at the top and taper towards the threads and are highly polished. Where the trigger contacts them it is machined with a cup in it to give additional contact. The mechanics of this rifle are rugged, robust, smooth and simply large.
The stock has a shiny varthane type finish it reminds me of 1903 Springfield C stock, the one with pistol grip that the match shooters prefered. The trigger guard resembles the 1903 milled trigger guard, and is attached to the stock with two wood screws. The but plate is a thin rubber pad.
THe bolt seems to have two lugs, one being the bolt handle recess, and on the other side of the reciever, as the bolt is lowered a allen head screw or what appears to be one, locks into a channel milled into the reciever.
The safety is the pin that has had considerable discussion before, it can fit into the reciever from either side, and I think does need a lanyard to prevent loss.
There are two weaver bases scred to the top of the reciever and the rear base has additional holes if you want to mover it foreward or backwards.
Overall, it is a big rifle that seems to be finely finished.
Well I shot it, UPS had delivered it about 5:15 PM, so I did not have much time.
I hastely put the 7X21 3200 MD on it and grabbed a bag of 229 grain HP that I got from Adventure in Airguns and headed out the door.
I used my Archery target as a backstop and a cardboard box to shoot at, nothing scientific here, no time for that, evidently I did not even have time to securely snug the scope ring cap screws either 🙄 .
All the shooting was on low power and 3000PSI fills, sort of.
I set the chrony on the hood of my Exploder, at 18 yards from the target I shot the first shot, it was 4 inches low, so I made an adjustment, the chrony read 840, the second shot was right on and it read 780.
I sat the target at 34 yards and filled the gun from one of my 44 cuft tanks, it was down to 2450 from a 3000PSI fill in two shots. I slowly bled the air out of the line and tried a shot at 34 yards, it was slightly high right and the chrony said 573 FPS.
Seems I had some what of a learning process on filling to complete, I tried it again, the pressure was now at 2500 PSI, so this time I let the bleed valve open quickly on my 3000PSI fill.
Two shots read 840 and 780, I filled again and got identical results, but I was having a two inch group going on, three shots were right where they should be into about 3/4 of an inch, but I had two high shots and one low also. Like I said the scope ring caps screws were not tight.
I quit shooting due to it getting too dark for Chrony readings. When I got back to the house I found the scope ring caps screws were not snug.
The gun is loud, a little louder than the Condor, it recoils like you would expect a 10LB 45 acp to recoil like which is hardly at all.
So I learned a few things tonight:
the fill proceedure seems to require you to open the bleed valve quickly,
it shoots on low and @3000PSI about the same as a 45 ACP, with what you would shoot in a 45 acp,
If your in a hurry you will forget things like tightening scope cap screws
And if you want something really bad, UPS will deliver it just before dark. 🙄
Now about the gun, The trigger is nice, the different power settings, high and low are discernable easily when you cock it. Cocking is easy and loading is easy, the bullets seat easily when you close the bolt.
The gun is big and robust, the finsh is very good, the stock still has a curing thing going on in that I could smell the finish. The wood is beautiful, but not select by any means.
It is an easy gun to shoot, once you learn about the fill technique.
Nothing so far here is carved in stone though, I shot 8 shots on low setting with bullets that I would normally not use for anything but plinking.
Tonight I will take it out of the stock and inspect it throughly again, check metal to wood fit and overall workmanship that I have to say I have not thoroughly done so far in my haste .
Maybe caress it a little too. 😎

i am hoping my ranger action gets shipped out next week , then i will be in the ups tracking suspense mod myself ! or maybe i will just have him ship it to the ups Vancouver hub , so i can just pick up there since it is real close on my way home from work .

Yes it is 3:50 PM here and still nothing.
I went down to the electric gate to make sure it was working, damn good thing I did for it was not working, So took the actuator arm off of it, then I opened it and propped it open.
I did not want another rerun of the LD and Crosman 600 incident where he just left a note.
And I continue to wait, An hour and 8 minutes and it will be end of the day, which is when they say it will be here.
And such beautuiful weather to shoot in for a change.
I have decided to put my spare scope on it instead of the 2×7 Burris for testing, I have a 7×21 Bushnell 3200 with Mildot under the bed in a box and decided for accuracy testing I will use it, drop is drop and once I get the results at various ranges I can just mount the 2×7 hunting scope and adjust power until the ballistic marks correspond with drop.
I am still a couple of weeks out on the 425 grain mold, in the mean time Butcher is sending me a care package of 452 Bullits that have been talking to him in the middle of the night and keeping him awake. 😆
I have changed my mind on my target, this weekend I will take PT 2X12’s and make a 4x3x4 U shaped enclosure 3 feet high, and fill it with sand at my 100 yard bank, that way I can shoot the Airarcher,and the 45 Ranger and my 25 Condor and recover arrows and lead. At $3.30 a pound plus freight for lead, I want to recover as much as I can.
I will just drive my Exploder down to the vaious ranges and turn it sideways to give my my hood rest.

Yes, although I prefer them slim, Christy Alley would be a handsome woman at any weight, it is just I would not want to carry her on my back all day elk hunting. 😆
Interesting thing with this gun and the 229 grn HP’s. I was shooting from a forearm supported position, on the back rest of my back seat, this morning, not the best shooting postiton, but I could definately see as velocity decays, the POI drops.
Which we all know happens with PCP’s as velocity decays POI does indeed drop, it is just that with this gun that is two shots with a 3000PSI fill.
I sighted the gun in with the 2×7 Burris Fullfield this morning, I could not bring myself to have a 7X21 on a big game rifle. At 30 yards shooting from the back seat thru my open hatch on the Ford Exploder, to see if the noise was less inside the house above me, than shooting from the outside. So like I said it was not the the best of conditions.
I shot two two shot groups, the first shots of each fill were inside of .42, the second shots of each fill were into .17 and all four were iside of 1 inch. Tethered this thing would be virtual 1 holer.
I have read in accounts of those of you who play with these big bores, of how you shoot a second bullet of lesser weight, Dan Mcvey did this in testing my rifle before shipping it, I am seeing the importance of that.
Now a note about air usage, and the need for Shoeboxes, Boosters and extra tanks. I have shot this gun 15 times now, my 44 CUFT tank started off at 3600 PSI, it is now at 3000PSI. So you can see the need for the above mention implements.
